29: The Eleventh January
The eleventh of January, the most important date in the calendar. Why? Because it's the day where we wish a happy birthday to Shoto Todoroki! What an amazing guy he is, high praise but he's definitely my favourite anime character, I can't lie. Hence this oneshot collection.
Quirk: Carbon Armour
Sat in the common room we were busy ignoring the piles of work we had to do by organising the surprise party I had decided to throw for Shoto's birthday. The only people that weren't there to help organise were Shoto and Midoriya as it was Midoriya's job to keep him away as we planned it. I had been elected to be in charge of it as it was my idea, so everyone sat on the sofa's and chairs, politely listening to my ideas. A notepad in hand, I began explaining my ideas for the decorations.
"Okay, so I was thinking of having a large 'happy birthday' banner going across the windows here, groups of large balloons tied to the chairs and attached to weights so we could have them either side of each sofa, and we could have the food and drink table over here," I said, gesturing under the banners' located spot. "We could stack presents up in that corner, perhaps have them on a table... actually who is planning on getting Shoto a gift?" I asked skeptically. Most put their hands up, the only that didn't were Shoji, Tokoyami and of course, Bakugou.
"Why don't you guys at least go halves with someone?" Ojiro suggested, and both Shoji and Tokoyami agreed to that suggestion.
"Pfft, if you think I'm going to have anything to do with this crap then you've got it all wrong. I don't want to give that bastard anything," Bakugou huffed and I gritted my teeth. "Come on, we know the only reason you're so keen to do this is because you like him," Bakugou said directly to me. My face heated up and my eyes widened.
"I-I don't! That's not true!" I said in an unusually high voice.
"It's so damn obvious," he enforced, but Kirishima hit his shoulder as if to say 'stop embarrassing her'. I gulped and looked away from the class, trying to focus on my ideas for the party. I coughed, trying to snap out of my embarrassment.
"A-anyway... I was thinking of having a cake in the middle of the table, three tiers, the bottom and top being white, the middle being red... I'll pay for the cake myself as I imagine it'll be pricey..." I said in a quiet voice.
"It's okay (y/n), you don't have to do this all by yourself, we'll happily help," Momo said and I turned to smile gratefully at her.
"Yes indeed! We ought to separate ourselves into different committees: the decoration committee and the food committee, and (y/n) can help out with each!" Iida said, standing and chopping the air with his hands.
"Ooh! I dibs being on the decoration committee!" Mina shouted enthusiastically.
"I'll happily take the food committee," Sato said politely.
"Thank you, guys... you're help means a lot," I smiled quietly, and I heard Bakugou scoff. Trying to ignore him, we carried on planning.
"And we can all chip in for the cake," Kirishima said and everyone nodded.
"Are you sure?" I asked, and again they all nodded. For the next hour we planned and decided who would be doing what. Organising the decorations was Mina, Aoyama, Shoji, Tokoyami, Ojiro, Mineta, Tsu and Midoriya. For food we had Sato, Ochaco, Momo, Koda, Kirishima, Kaminari, Iida and Toru. Kyoka and Sero were in charge of music, and Bakugou didn't want to be involved with any of it, so strolled back to his room. We had one week to get everything sorted, and with the whole class on board we managed to get everything done on time. I went straight to the cake shop and ordered the cake, making sure it'd be done by the day of the party. Midoriya was doing a good job of keeping Shoto distracted, he apparently had no idea what we were planning for him.
His birthday was on a Saturday, so again throughout the day the only person that saw him was Midoriya. Shoji and Tokoyami's Dark Shadow held up the big banner reading 'Happy Birthday, Todoroki!' In bright red letters with intricate decorations I had painted on around the letters and Sero taped it to the wall. "Wow (y/n), that looks so pretty!" Mina squealed excitedly.
"Do you think he'll like it?" I asked, doubting myself now.
"Of course he will! He'll love all the effort you've put in for him," she said, smiling. I nodded my head, seriously hoping he would. Around me everyone was putting their efforts in, some of the guys were blowing up balloons, Ochaco was using her zero gravity to attach streamers to the ceiling, with the help of Sero who stuck them securely. Sato, Momo and Iida were laying out all the food across the table, and Ojiro and Toru came in with the cake on a wheeled cart. I was incredibly happy with it, as it looked exactly how I wanted it to, the two white tiers made to look like ice and the middle orange/red tier made to look like fire. The pair hauled it onto the food table where it stood proudly in the middle.
I placed everyones presents in the corner and turned around to see the final decorations being put in place. It looked like a fun party, but not too over the top. There were a few balloons tied to weights that were placed either side of the sofa's, there were thin streamers hanging across the ceiling, the table of food with the cake in the middle and the banner hanging above it. "Do you think it's too much?" I asked.
"No of course not! I think he'll love it," Toru said, clapping her hands together.
"Will you try and make your move tonight?" Kaminari said openly.
"W-what?!" I stuttered.
"Kaminari, don't put her on the spot like that! But... are you?" Mina said and I squealed.
"I-I... w-well-," I couldn't say anything. It was then however that my phone saved me, as it buzzed loudly. I turned away from my class and read the text Midoriya had sent me, saying that the pair of them were on their way. "They're coming! I haven't even gotten dressed yet!" I squealed, and immediately we all ran to our rooms to get ready in the fifteen minutes Midoriya said we had. I flicked through my wardrobe quickly, before finally deciding on some cream trousers, a light pink bralette and a white cardigan over the top, buttoning up the middle three buttons. I nodded at myself in the mirror and applied subtle makeup with light pink eyeshadow. I let my hair hang loose and ran quickly back into the common room where I found most of the guys already waiting.
"Wow, you look nice, trying to impress someone?" Kaminari teased and this time I covered my fist with my carbon shield and punched him right on his shoulder. "OW!"
"Then shut up!" I shouted, shoving his party popper into his hand. I handed out the rest of them to the other guys, and the girls got back to the common room just in time for me to receive the text saying that the pair of them had arrived. I handed them their party poppers and we all hid behind the sofa's and chairs waiting in anticipation for the lights to be turned on.
"(y/n), come on. Make your move tonight," Kaminari whispered to me as he crouched next to me.
"What? No, I'm not going to, he won't feel the same way," I said through gritted teeth.
"I think you should, (y/n). His actions around you make it seem as though he may reciprocate your feelings," Iida whispered from my other side.
"Not you too," I sighed. The lights suddenly turned on, and we all jumped up simultaneously, popping our poppers and yelling out "Happy birthday!" I blushed as I saw him wide eyed, wearing his turtleneck jumper that I loved so much. My heart began to pound but I tried my very best to ignore it. It seemed to take him a solid minute to take it all in as his eyes darted around the room at the decorations, the food and the presents.
"Happy birthday dude, (y/n) decided to throw you a surprise party so we all chipped in," Kirishima said, and my cheeks burnt as Shoto turned to look towards me, a slight smile creeping onto his face. Next to me Kaminari nudged my shoulder, so I covered my fist with my carbon shield again and he backed off.
"Thank you, (y/n)," Shoto said and I shrugged.
"I-it's no problem," I said, internally swearing at myself for stuttering.
"Well, let's get this party started!" Mina squealed, and Kyoka plugged in the music and everyone immediately began conversing. A lot of people went over to Shoto to personally wish him a happy birthday, and I just stood from afar, watching. I caught his eye a few times, him wearing an adorable small smile. I shook my head, as though I was trying to shake myself of these feelings.
- Timeskip -
Sat alone on the sofa I simply watched everyone talk and dance happily, that was until Kaminari and Mina came over. "If you're going to tell me I need to do something then save your breath. I'm not going to do anything," I huffed, taking a sip of my drink.
"Oh come on (y/n), he's interested in you, I'm sure of it!" Mina said.
"He'd be crazy to say no to you," Kaminari added with a wink but I simply scoffed.
"I think he's interested in someone else," I sighed, looking over to where he was standing.
"Oh yeah? Who?" The pair of them said, and I nodded my head towards them. He was standing extremely close to Momo, him blushing and her giggling. They looked very happy together, deep in conversation and looking as though the world around them didn't exist, and it was just them two.
"I need some air," I muttered, standing up about to walk towards the balcony.
"No, (y/n), don't go," Mina pleaded.
"Time for presents!" Toru shouted excitedly over the music.
"Yeah, at least stay for the presents," Kaminari said wearing a pitiful look I despised. I looked over his shoulder and saw Momo dragging Shoto by the hand towards one of the sofa's, them sitting down close to each other, her eyes on him as he blushed a little more.
"N-no, I think I'm okay," I whispered, wearing a hollow smile. Once away from the party I felt the fresh air hit my face, and I breathed in deeply, trying so hard to just forget about my crush for one moment. I pulled out from my pocket a cigarette, something I only had whenever I was stressed. Lighting it, I breathed it in and slowly felt more relaxed as I stared out into the night at the UA school building. Apart from Kaminari and Mina, no one noticed me slip away and out onto the balcony. At least that's what I thought.
- Todoroki's POV -
"Do I really have to open all the presents now," I asked, Yaoyorozu sitting me down on the sofa next to her. Awkwardly I pulled my hand away from her grasp and tried to shuffle away from her slightly, but was distracted as Hagakure brought some of the presents over from the table.
"Yes, of course you do!" Hagakure said excitedly. She made everyone gather round which made me a little embarrassed, as I didn't like this kind of attention. Thankfully everyone was still conversing in small groups, so I didn't feel too embarrassed. I did notice however that one important person was missing.
"Where's (y/n)?"
"Oh, she went out onto the balcony, she's - er -," Ashido started.
"She's got a headache," Kaminari finished. I furrowed my eyebrows, wanting her to be here. I opened a few of my presents, receiving some jumpers, a pair of gloves and Kaminari thought it'd be a great idea to get me a teddy bear which had red around it's left eye. I threw it back at him, knocking him off of the sofa making Jirou laugh hysterically.
"This one's from (y/n), I believe," Uraraka said, handing me a box. It was quite heavy, and as I opened it and lifted the lid off I stared at the present in awe. I had seen them in shops but they were so expensive I never bothered to buy one for myself. Everyone had noticed I had gone quiet, and apparently they were intrigued.
"What is it?" Sero asked, and I gently pulled it out of the box.
"It's a crystal sake set... this is incredible," I whispered in awe, looking at the intricately carved detail in the crystal. The set came with four additional glasses, each with unique intricate patterns carved into them... I couldn't believe she'd buy something like this for me.
"She also got you this," Kirishima said, dragging a largish box towards me. I stood up and walked up to it to save Kirishima from having to drag it too far. Some of my classmates followed, crowding around the box in curiosity. I looked at the label which simply read 'Shoto, happy birthday, (y/n) x.' Before anyone noticed, I tore off the label and pocketed it, blushing slightly.
"Does anyone know what this is?" Uraraka asked openly.
"No, she only told me about the sake set," Ashido said, rubbing her chin. Carefully I opened the box, tearing away the wrapping paper then pulling away at the cardboard gently, revealing the second present. I audibly gasped when I saw it. "What is it?" Ashido asked desperately.
"I-it's a rare bonsai plant," I whispered, staring at it, my mouth gaping. I tore the box away from it and gently lifted it, putting it on a nearby table. The red leaves looked incredible against the dark bark, and there were light stones sitting above the soil it lived it. The plant was full of elegance, and it was only the other week I was speaking to her about wanting one so it could go upon my bureau.
"It looks amazing!" Uraraka said.
"It must've taken her ages to find this," Midoriya pointed out. I stood there silently, completely dumbfounded that she would get me something so rare and expensive, on top of the sake set.
"It looks incredibly expensive," Iida said and I nodded.
"Yeah, they are, they're incredibly rare and very expensive," I said, unable to tear my eyes away from it.
"Wow, she really is in love with you man," Kaminari suddenly said, and I shot my head around to face him. The whole class went quiet and he had realised what he said, stuttering uncontrollably, trying to take it back but not making any proper sense.
"She... what?" I asked, my heart beating a little faster. Feelings began to build quickly inside me, feelings I was not used to. Feelings which I felt when I first met her, but buried due to fear and uncertainty.
"Ugh, she likes you icy-hot, although I have no idea why," Bakugou growled. I hadn't even noticed him come and join us but right now I didn't care, I was too busy thinking about (y/n).
"Honestly Todoroki, I'm surprised you didn't catch on sooner, she stares at you all the time," Sero said. The rest of the class nodded as thoughts whirled around in my head, my heart beating erratically and I couldn't stop it. I looked at the sake set sitting on the sofa, then back at the bonsai plant sitting on the table. I gulped as feelings I had been concealing for a while now began to surface rapidly. I only kept them hidden because I was admittedly scared of them, never having felt them before.
"Where did you say she went?" I asked Ashido.
"To the balcony," she said, pointing in that general direction. Quickly I walked away from the crowd, ignoring everyone's smiles and cheers. The curtain and door was closed, so I gently slipped through it and pulled the sliding door open, then shut. I spotted her standing at the end of the balcony, her silhouette lit by the moon shining down upon her. She had her back to me, her arms leaning on the fence. I gulped, unsure on how to start or what to say. I breathed in deeply, deciding to begin with making my presence known to her.
- (y/n)'s POV -
It was impossible to get the thought of him out of my head. It irritated me more then anything that I could not stop thinking about him. Sighing deeply, I took another drag of my cigarette, staring dramatically at the moon. I scoffed, thinking that this was just like a scene from a film. "Hey," a sudden recognisable voice said behind me making me jump. I pulled the cigarette from my mouth and turned around sharply, hiding it behind my back. I did however still have a mouthful of cigarette smoke which I had to slowly and subtly let out. I saw his eyebrows furrow as he walked closer towards me. "(y/n), are you smoking?"
"mno," I mumbled, but I coughed and the smoke came out of my mouth. "Sorry, I only do it when I feel stressed," I said, putting out the cigarette in my hand.
"Well don't, it's a nasty habit," he said.
"I know, I don't do it regularly just..."
"When you're stressed. What's gotten you this stressed?" He asked sweetly.
"I-I... nothing important," I decided to say, shuffling my feet. He sighed and turned towards the view, leaning on the fence, me doing the same.
"Thank you for the celebration," he said, glancing towards me.
"That's alright, I was scared you might not like it," I laughed, rubbing the back of my head.
"No, I did like it, I'm glad someone acknowledged my birthday," he said wearing a smile, and I looked at him as if to say 'continue'. "My father never celebrated it, he said it'd distract me from my training. And seeing as he kept me isolated from my siblings whilst growing up, they never really celebrated it either. It just became a normal date, nothing special," he said.
"Shoto, I didn't know... I'm sorry," I whispered, gently placing my hands on top of his.
"(y/n), I can't accept your gifts," he said suddenly, startling me and I brought my hand away.
"W-what? Why not?"
"Because it's too much! You must've spent a ridiculous amount on them, I can't have you spending that much on me," he whispered, apparently feeling guilty.
"I wanted to spend that on you, you're one of the closest people to me," I admitted, turning red.
"How much did you spend?" He asked.
"E-er... s-sixty five thousand-,"
"What? No, (y/n), that's insane!"
"Don't you like them?" I asked, feeling kind of hurt.
"Of course I like them, in fact I love them, I really do I just don't want you spending so much money on me," he sighed, facing me directly.
"B-but I wanted to," I whispered, twiddling my thumbs and looking up into his heterochromatic eyes that always seemed to hypnotise me. We stood in silence for a moment just looking at each other. My heart was beating fast, two emotions fighting against each other, one expressing my love for him, the other telling me to leave it alone because he'd never like me.
"Thank you for them (y/n), they really are stunning," he whispered and I couldn't help but smile a little, nodding and tearing my eyes away from his. "(y/n)?"
"Hm?"
"Kaminari told me that you love me," he said quietly, my eyes widened and my stomach dropped, my heart stopped beating and my entire body filled with fear, expecting to be rejected and for him to confess that he was in love with Momo. My breathing turned heavy but the rest of my body was frozen. A sudden touch on my chin made me jump, and in one fast movement Shoto had leant down and pressed his lips onto mine, wrapping his arms around my waist. My eyes widened even more, shock absorbing my body and my arms heavy. I was in too much of a state to reciprocate the kiss but he pulled away and was staring down at me, standing closer to me then he'd ever done before with his arms still wrapped around my waist. "Please say it," he whispered. "Please tell me it's true..."
"O-oh my goodness... Shoto... y-yes it's true... I-I love you," I whispered, unable to stop myself. He smiled brightly, making me smile and laugh in surprise, him pulling me back in for another kiss which I happily returned, wrapping my arms around his neck. I never thought it was possible to feel as happy as I am now, our lips moving in sync with one another, our heads tilted slightly so we could get more of each other. My heart was beating like crazy, and I swore I could feel his heartbeat up against my chest. I ran my hand through his amazingly soft hair, pressing him further into the kiss causing him to moan making me smile against his lips.
"About time!" A voice that sounded like Kaminari's sounded, causing us to break apart and look towards him. I hid my face in Shoto's chest, and heard Mina apologise and drag him off. I laughed into his chest, hearing his fast heartbeat. I felt him kiss my head through my hair, and I looked back up at him, smiling brightly. Happiness had filled me up as I had tried my very best to ignore these feelings for so long, but to find that they were reciprocated made me feel as though I was in heaven.
"So..." I whispered, looking up at him.
"So, will you be my girlfriend?" He asked simply, to which I nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes, yes, absolutely!" I cried, jumping into his arms and him spinning me around.
"Good... I have to say now that this has been a pretty incredible birthday," he whispered in my ear, making me giggle.
"Good, I'm glad," I smiled into his shoulder.
