Thirteen

'Hey!' I hear a muffled voice. It's vaguely familiar. 'Hey, wake up!' Whoever it was, they dealt a blow to my stomach. Enraged, my eyes snap open, and lo and behold! It was a person I'd despised the most; the reason for my calamitous life.

You know, there are some people that if you think you meet again, you'd go bat shit crazy on them? Drill a hole and then bury them in it? Or worse, play ping-pong with their head.

Such a person stood before me, her ugly visage hovering over mine.

And if you're still unable to guess, despite my many clues, well, I'll be kind and tell you that you've been distracted. Pay attention! Who else could it be but Witch!

You remember her? Please tell me you do. She's the reason my life became like this in the first place! The rejection of her confession led me to my fall.

I brushed her face aside with my hand. Get lost. I don't want to see you!

Surprisingly, she refrained from cursing me again.

I had fallen asleep on the street, like the first time I'd come to City.

'You look like a mess,' she commented as I struggled to get up. I gave her a look, 'Yeah, no kidding.' Suddenly, I realized something. I was speaking.

I was speaking coherently.

How? Why?

It revitalized me. I sprang to my feet. I could look for Flabby and Child!

'Wait!' Witch cried.

I jogged away. Like I would stay around and listen to her! What if she curses me again? This time, something worse? Although I failed to draw up anything worse than what I was going through.

'You're free!'

I came to a stop at once. My head snapped toward her. 'What?' My voice was barely heard.

Witch smiled at me. 'You're free.'

'Free from what?' I asked, dumbly.

She rolled her eyes. 'From the curse, you dummy.' Witch eyed me with a guilty look, 'I've always hated myself for doing that to you, but since I cursed you to be Nobody, I couldn't find you.'

I blinked.

'I sensed you a few hours ago.'

'How?' I furrowed my brows.

'Someone must have remembered you.'

'But they aren't supposed to. People always forgot about me the next day, and I-' My voice died in my throat.

She sighed. Her shoulders slumped.

I knew who had done it. I knew who remembered me. It had to be them. It had to be those two. The two I'd been looking for.

City felt different now. The air felt fresh, the sky was brighter, and the people looked pleasant. It was beautiful.

Without a word, I ran toward the bakery. When I failed to find them there, I decided to go to my place. On the way there, my eyes caught a familiar face on the wall. It was Child's. Her face! Her family was looking for her!

Then there was Flabby, too!

Outside the temporary shelter we had sought in the abandoned project, I saw them. This time, they were really there.

When Child's eyes met mine, I stilled.

She was still wearing that guady dress I'd bought. She beamed. 'Beach!'

I realized something. When it came to those two, I had an endless supply of tears.

Flabby jumped out of her arms and ran into mine. I knelt and felt its fuzziness between my palms. I had missed it. A ball of adorableness. That's what Flabby was. I'd fight anyone who'd try to tell me otherwise.

'How did you two remember?' How was it possible? I thought I'd never see you again. I prayed. I begged for a chance to see you both.

Child embraced me. 'Beach,' she repeated.

'Beach?'

'Fun.'

'You had fun at the beach, and that's how you remembered me?' I let go of her.

She shook her head and pointed to her dress. 'Pretty.'

'It is! It's the prettiest dress I've ever seen!' It was the truth. I threw my head back and laughed. She giggled, and Flabby nuzzled its head into my legs. I was having a blast. In fact, I'd go so far as to tell them that they were the best thing that had happened to me.

'Let's go inside! I'm sure the two of you are famished.' I carried Flabby in one arm and held onto Child's hand with the other.

As we were about to enter, Child tugged my hand and pointed to something behind us.

It was Witch.

'Come inside! We're going to eat!' I invited her.

She was surprised, and so was I. Who she was or what she'd done hardly mattered to me anymore.

When we entered, I felt Child stiffen. I followed her gaze and figured out that she was staring at the pearls. 'I'm sorry about yesterday,' I said. 'If you want, I'll buy a better one for you.'

Child grinned.

'Now, go collect them lest our guest falls and hurts her head.' I took a dig at Witch, and she graciously let it slide.

I cooked for the four of us. We ate together.

Child said she wanted to sleep, so I tucked her in.

When her soft snores filled my home, I was at peace. Flabby lay on my lap, lazily licking its paws. It was then that Witch spoke up, her voice laced with emotion, 'I see you found yourself a good family.'

'The best.'

She swallowed. 'Listen, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I did to you. I abused my powers. I am the worst person ever. I don't blame you if you despise me. A few days after my anger abated, I regretted it. I regretted it so much that I wanted to find you, but I couldn't because you became Nobody. Nobody remembered you. Even my divination techniques fell short. That's when I realized what a powerful curse I'd placed on you.' Witch whimpered, wiping her tears away.

I found it funny that both of us, grown-ups, were the only ones who were crying.

Flabby was chilling, and Child was blissfully asleep.

Life was wonderful.

'I forgive you.'
