Chapter Seven: A Confession
"I thought there might be trouble, and look!" Headmaster yelled, he was holding a vampire hunter rifle away from Mr. Toga. Yuki and Zero were in the fountain and Zero was bleeding out of his shoulder. Wow, I missed a lot. "This is a perfect example of why I hate vampire hunters. And how much longer are you going to keep a girl in cold water? You must be freezing, here grab my hand."
Zero and Yuki ignored him and pulled themselves out. I walked over to the group, "A little gun crazy, aren't you, Mr. Yagari."
"I'm surprised you're still alive, I thought you're little blood condition would've killed you by now," Toga commented.
"Unfortunately, I'm still alive," I have him a dark smile.
"That's it," Yuki interrupted, "I want to know who you are."
"When Zero was training to be a vampire hunter, I was his mentor," Yagari explained, "Isn't that right, Zero?"
"It's true," Zero muttered.
"You really are the adopted daughter of that silly twit, he was about to attack you, yet you consider me your enemy," Toga put a cigarette to his lips.
"Yuki, Annabel, go back to your dorms," the headmaster spoke, "I will take it from here."
I nodded and took Yuki's hand. "Come on, we're leaving. Headmaster, I have classes tomorrow."
"Oh, I hope you have fun," the headmaster spoke happily as I drug Yuki away. She pulled on her hand.
"Anna! Let me go, I need to help Zero."
I turned around and let her go, "You are not helping! Do you really think having a human around, especially one he has already drank from, is beneficial? Headmaster and Mr. Yagari can handle him. You would be too scared to pull the trigger."
Yuki glared at me, "This is Zero! We've known him and lived with him for four years. How do you know all this anyways? How do you know all about vampires, all about hunters, all about everything? Why are you two keeping me in the dark?" Her eyes were large and dark. The moon made them shine as tears threatened to spill, "I thought we were sisters."
I stood still. Memories of Yuki helping me clean the blood off me came into mind. All the stupid games we used to play. All the classes I kicked her awake in. I bit my lip.
"I'm keeping you safe."
"Then what about Zero!" She yelled, "If your both protecting men then who's protecting you? I don't even know what's going on with you anymore. You're skipping patrol, skipping class to take college classes."
I sighed, "Soon. I'll tell you soon."
She huffed, "Some sister you are."
I clenched my fist, "We are not sisters. My sister is dead. My parents are dead. And I'm trying to make sure the same doesn't happen to you."
Yuki backed away. Her voice trembled, "Fine, we're not sisters."
She ran towards out dorms. I stood still and looked up at the moon, my vision grew hazy and I choked down the tears, but one escaped and hit the concrete ground. One tear to mark the end of a sisterhood that was longer than the lifespan of my actual sister.
She was right, after all, I have kept her in the dark about everything for my whole life. She only recently found out about Zero's plight and I kept that from her too. She knew virtually nothing about me, but I knew about her.
She lost her memory as a child. Her first memory being Kaname saving her from a vampire. He told her her parents were dead. She was taken to the care of Kaien Cross, who adopted her. She didn't talk until Kaname came. He visited her every year, and then I came into the picture. She knew my family had been killed in front of me. She knew I was traumatized. She knew that I didn't want to talk about it. She accepted that and instead went on to make memories with me.
She tried to get me to play with her, and sometimes it worked. She'd serve me imaginary food that I would eat and rate. She'd brush my long black hair and try to braid it. It often ended up looking like a rats nest, but I didn't mind. I had done those games with my sister.
When Zero arrived we tried to get him to play with us, but he never did. Eventually, we stopped playing all together. At that time, Kaien saw it fit to teach us how to fight. I was confused as to why a pacifist knew how to fight, but I quickly realized he was a hunter. Dress up was replaced by sparing and middle school was replaced by Cross Academy. And then we ended up here.
I stared out the window of my dorm as Moka slept soundly. How would she react if she knew she was sleeping in the same room as a human-vampire princess? She too wondered why I would scream and yell in the middle of the night, but she never questioned. I looked over at the sleeping girl. Her wavy brown hair fanned out over her pillow, her neck was being highlighted by moonbeams. Is that how it felt? When a hunter looks at it's prey? Does it feel like they are small and innocent?
I looked up at the moon, the only constant companion for my kind. I will protect the ones I love. I will get stronger for them. I will tell them my secret. My name is Princess Annabel Diana Ambrosia Quinn-Cross and I will protect my sister, Yuki Cross, and my brother, Zero Kiryu from the dangers my world has presented them with.

"Ugh, I can't do this," I whined while laying on the floor. For the past hour and a half I have been trying to expand what I dubbed my spider senses. Kaname called it psisensory clairoptics or something like that. Essentially, I should be able to see behind objects in my brain with a medium amount of effort, but I was failing. Sweat dripped down my face and I had a headache.
"Just breathe and focus."
"We're vampires, we don't have to breathe!" I retorted furiously.
Kaname glared at me, his eyes turning red, "You want to test that theory."
I closed my mouth and got back into meditation mode. Breathe. Focus. I couldn't focus with Yuki on my mind. I hurt her badly last night and I wasn't sure if I could repair the damage.
"You're not focusing," Kaname taunted. I let out a huff and air and uncrowded my legs.
"Can we switch to a different subject?"
Kaname laid on his bed, eyes closed. In fact, he didn't seem well. "How far can your hearing go?"
I shrugged and turned in to the noise around me. The day class students were terribly loud. I could hear Naoki giving Wei the answer as to a math test. Farther out, a dog and a human walked on the trail by the town. The town market was hustling as Mrs. Nakamara had a new shipment of peppers. Past that, it was spotty. I usually had to turn down my senses in
"If I really focus, two towns over."
Kaname seemed surprised, "That's really good, impressive even." I grinned. "If only you were good at the mental parts of being a pureblood."
I sighed and rolled my eyes, "Speaking of pureblood, what were my test results?" Kaname laid down in silence. I grew impatient and poked his foot! "Hello?"
"I'm still figuring that out."
I raised and eyebrow and gave a coy smile, "Wow, Lord Kaname Kuran is having a hard time figuring out little ol' me's blood." Kaname remained silent and tension brewed in the room. "Sorry, I appreciate you trying. . . How was Takuma's party?"
"Pretty dead."
I let out a bust of laughter. Kaname opened his left eye, an amused smirk on his lips.
"In all seriousness," the vampire spoke, "I'm worried about your blood. Human and vampire don't mix and the combination could prove to be deadly."
My smile fell, "What?"
"We can't be sure, you've lived this long, after all," Kanane tried to soothe me, but I was caught up on the revelation. I could die?
I grew angry, "Then why aren't we doing more important stuff. I should be learning something more useful. I should be strengthening the vampire side," I ranted, "You should be doing more, unless you actually want me to die. I don't even know why I'm here. What are you even getting in return, Kaname? What are you planning?"
Kaname sat up, his eyes a furious red, "Leave, practice is over."
"No! I won't go until you tell me what you're getting out of this. I was crazy to accept this offer anyways. You could be killing me for all I know!"
In the next instant his hand held my throat, "Go home, Annabel."
I shook in his grasp, I could feel my air constrict. I felt him slip something into my hand, "And take those, too."
I stared up at his face. His eyes were red and his lips here thin and pressed. His eyebrows were set. It felt like a predator looking at his prey. I glared at him, my eyes felt hot, but I held my ground, "Fine."
He took a step back in surprise, "There's another stack of books for you to read on the desk on your way out."
I just nodded and put on my uniform jacket. Without a goodbye, I took the books and whatever he had slipped in my hand and I left.

I couldn't look at Yuki during the crossover. Zero wasn't around and she was struggling on her side of the aisle, but my side pushed and shoved, too. I saw Kaname look at her. I had a feeling he was planning something. Him getting angry was not a picture I wanted to see again.
Patrol was boring, like usual. I tried to do the sensory power Kaname showed me, but I still found it difficult. I focused on one of the trees and closed my eyes. Focus. What's behind it? Is there any danger? The image behind the tree was blurry, but something small was moving. I tried to zoom in on the picture and make it clearer, but to no such luck.
"Damn," I whispered and punched the stone. The physical aspects of being a vampire came easy, but the mental powers were difficult. Maybe Kaname was a bad teacher. No, he knew what he was doing. He seemed much older and wiser than an 18 year old, even for a Pureblood.
I leaned against the Headmasters building and closed my eyes. Breathe. Breathe. Focus. Breath. Breathe. And I saw movement. At first, it was blurry, but slowly it came into focus. And then is was like I was looking directly at it. There was Zero, his white hair and pale eyes gave it away. No wonder I haven't seen him all day, he's been quarantined. I walked around the building to the door and entered. I walked down the hallway with my hand on every door so I could look into them. Finally, I found Zero's. I took a breath, and knocked.
He opened the door, he was wearing a blue and white t-shirt and looked okay, "Anna? How did you find me?"
I crossed my arms, "How do you think?"
Zero stared at me, "You're an unusual person, Annabel, I'm not sure what you are."
At least he realized I wasn't completely human.
"Annabel! Zero!"
I turned to see Yuki racing down the hallway.
"Yuki...How did you-?"
"Why are you staying in this room just because that man said to?" Yuki questioned passionately, "Zero, there's no lock on this door, so why don't you just leave?"
"Both of you go home," he moved to shut the door, but Yuki and I blocked it from closing.
"Hold on!" I shouted.
"Why are you doing whatever that guy says?" Yuki inquired.
Zero stared at the floor, "My family has been vampire hunters for many generations now. Even my parents were vampire hunters. When I was a kid, there would be long stretches of time when my parents would go away. That man would look after my brother and me as both our teacher and our guardian. And that was when it happened, when I saw what they call a Level E for the first time. The head nurse at our grade school was a kind and beautiful woman, but, in truth, she was a vampire that was formally human. One day she suddenly transformed into a ferocious vampire right in front of us. In that moment, even when her neck was smashed, she continued to bare her fangs until the moment she died and I became afraid of vampires for the first time ever. My master risked his life to teach us that lesson, so if he says he has to kill me-"
"No, the truth is the only thing your doing right now is choosing to hide and give up on yourself. You made me take that gun, even when I said I didn't want it, so don't run away for me. Let us in," Yuki fired back ferociously. I smiled, she had guts.
"I have something to tell you guys," I said walking in behind Yuki. My siblings looked back at me in surprise.
"What is it, Anna? How did you find Zero, anyways?" Yuki asked. I could still see the hurt I gave her yesterday. I looked at the ground.
"I've been keeping a secret for a long time know," I started, "I was born in Europe, my family has many castles and mansions throughout the land, but I was forced to stay in one of our mansion in England, giving me my accent. I had a mom, a dad, and a little sister." I smiled at the memory and looked up. My smile fell, "They were Pureblood vampires."
Yuki and Zero gasped. Zero reacted instantly, pointing his anti-vampire gun at me.
I paid no attention and sat on his bed, "I'm not a vampire, at least not completely. I'm a rarity among my kind, apparently the first that Kaname and the headmaster has heard of. I may be a vampire, but I'm also human."
Zero's gun fell to his side, "How is that possible?"
I shrugged, "I have more questions than answers at this point. I have Pureblood traits and human ones. I don't have fangs, so I rely on meats and medications to keep me from passing out, which has been getting trickier. Along with my iron tablets, I've recently started blood tablets like Zero had, just so I don't faint. I'm more durable and stronger than a human. Basically, I'm either a incredibly strong human or a very weak Pureblood."
"So you've been missing class.." Yuki started.
"To take classes, I've been working with Kaname to unlock my powers."
Zero and Yuki stood in shock. I smiled wryly, "I guess you're somewhat caught up."
Yuki sighed, "Any other life-changing reveals?"
I laughed, "Oh yeah, my real name is Annabel Diana Ambrosia Quinn, Crown Princess of the Society of European Vampires." Zero and Yuki stared at me. "Also, I've known that Zero was turning into a vampire since he entered the house four years ago. And I used some of my new Pureblood-Jedi powers to find Zero."
"I knew you were weird," Zero muttered.
I glared at him, "If you are planning on feeding him, Yuki, just know your blood won't last long. Mine or Kaname's is better, and I'm not afraid to be part of the Red Cross for vampire vampire-hunters. But if you prefer her, go ahead. Kanane won't be happy."
"I'm aware of everything you just told me," Yuki whispered. She looked up, her face hard with determination, "It won't change my decision."
I nodded, "Goodnight then. I will finish up the patrol."
I got up and looked over to a confused Zero and a determined Yuki, "Don't let my status change our relationship."
Zero narrowed his eyes and Yuki still looked hurt. I turned around and walked out. I was still too late in revealing what I was, I still hurt her. I was outside by the time I smelt Yuki's blood. The strange sweet and copper fusion made me cough. I took another red pill. I was an accessory to a dark crime: keeping a vampire alive.

Zero wasn't in class the next day. Mr. Yagari was gone too. Yuki raced out of the classroom via the balcony.
Sayori called out to me, "Where's Yuki going?"
I got up from my desk, "Getting Zero, I'm going to go see where Mr. Yagari is."
I followed suit by going out onto the class balcony and leaping down, I rolled into the impact and broke out into a run. I doubted Toga would kill Zero, but I'll be there anyways.
"Stop! Zero!"
And then two gunshots. I ran into the house and ran up to Zero's room just as Toga walked out. He was talking to Yuki.
"Mr. Yagari, the class is getting impatient," I said running up.
He stopped, "And there you are, the trio is complete: A human, a human-vampire, and a vampire." I glared at him. "Help keep Zero in line, the girl is week."
"What do you think I've been doing the last four years?"
He looked amused, "Pretty awful job at it, but what do expect from a vampire. Oh, and Zero, the women is still alive."
The women? I paused and looked at Yuki soothing Zero. It'd be awkward if I joined them.
"I'm going back to class, I'll take extra notes."
And I walked away, leaving Yuki and Zero together. Perhaps it was I that always left them.
