The fire alarm was loud, high-pitched and rustic, in the sense of a dozen tiny bells all being rung in perfect unison, creating a loud, ear-piercing cacophony. Virgil covered his ears and Talyn shrieked in horror. Joan looked about expectantly, turning to Janus who had grabbed Remus's hand. Patton looked over at Logan at the same time as Roman: the detective remained unphased.
"Everyone," He said, loudly and calmly. "Please leave the manor house. Talyn, this interview will resume quickly."
No one moved for a moment, then Roman started making ushering gestures. "C'mon, c'mon! Up, up! Do you want to burn?" He turned to Virgil, offering a hand. "Are you alright?"
Virgil nodded, carefully uncovering his ears and taking Roman's hand; Logan narrowed his eyes but, for once, made no sarcastic or rude comment about it. Instead, he grabbed hold of Talyn's wrist, keeping them behind their back, and escorted the suspect from the room, regularly glancing back into the room. Roman and Virgil took up the rear and the group walked through the dining room, entering the hallway beyond.
The alarm was still ringing and it was starting to give Logan a headache. Talyn whimpered when they passed under one of the bells and he raised one hand to try and shield their closest ear without letting go. Once reaching the courtyards, he noticed instantly that it was a false alarm.
For a start, the horses weren't panicking. Yes, they seemed confused, pacing in their pens, but not even Cassidy was rearing up in fright. There were still birds flying around, even if they were squawking, and there was no smell of smoke anywhere.
Joan ran out of the house behind him, attempting to make a beeline for Talyn. Logan cut them off, with a stern look and they hesitated.
"I just want to check they're okay," They pleaded, glancing at the suspect worriedly.
"I'm afraid you can't talk to them until after I've completed my interview," Logan said.
Joan waved a hand to the manor, where Patton, Janus and Remus were emerging. "Look how bloody well your interview has gone, then, huh?"
"There is no fire," Logan assured. "My interview will continue once the bell has stopped and everyone has calmed down."
Joan blinked. "H-How do you know there's no fire?"
"It's simple. Now, do not talk to the suspect."
Virgil stepped out of the house, still holding Roman's hand, and the officer peeled himself away to approach Logan. "There's no fire, Logan," He said, "It must've been a false alarm."
"Yes, I agree." The detective looked around "What curious timing. Lord Blacksky, there's no way of turning this off, is there?"
Virgil hesitated, looking at Janus, before looking back at Logan. "Yeah, there's a lever on the side of the horse's stable. You'll need a key, though."
"Do you have one on you?"
Virgil rooted into his pockets and pulled out a key made of heavy metal and rusty copper. "That's the key," He said. "Turn left three rotations and that should do the trick."
Logan took the key and began making his way to the stables around the courtyard. The lever was in a wooden case, that swung open once he used the key. He flipped the lever, which groaned at the use, but the alarm stop quickly. The ringing bell had been replaced with blissful silence.
That was, until, he heard Talyn start crying loudly.
Upon returning to the courtyard, he saw Talyn sitting on the ground, in the middle of a panic attack, with everyone crowding around nervously. Roman responded quickly, thankfully. "Okay, everyone, back up and give them some room!" He punched people back if necessary and created a safe 'bubble' around the stable worker.
Logan came around the back, kneeling next to them while not touching them. "Taly, if you are currently struggling, we can continue the interview later. However long it takes, I will finish talking to you on this. Until the interview is over, no one may speak to you. Is that okay?"
Talyn hesitated, not answering. They kept crying, managing to nod, and Logan stood up. Alright. Go to your quarters. I'll see if you've calmed down in an hour, or so."
Joan was let through to help Talyn to their feet, making soothing noises and gushing sounds. They returned into the manor and Logan watched them leave. Then, he turned to Roman. "Come on," He said. "We're going to have a chat."
