A new friendship

I think we can all agree that Fridays are the best day of the week.

It's the start of the weekend which means no school.

And it also means football games.

It was the first one of the season today and you can tell that everyone will be there.

The team was wearing their jerseys and the cheerleaders had their uniforms on.

"Good luck at the game tonight James!" Whitney calls out.

Whitney Rogers.

Long blonde hair, tanned skin, and big blue eyes.

She's the junior girl everyone was after.

And let me tell you, I would give anything to be her boyfriend.

I've had a crush on her since the 2nd grade.

But I was a total nerd until freshman year.

I wore my glasses to school, I had braces in middle school, acne decided it was going to be my best friend, and I only had my best friend, Tyler.

Tyler and I have been friends our whole lives.

Mostly because he was our neighbor and I would spend the night when my parents were fighting.

But Whitney, She never went through her awkward faze, She worked out, keeping herself in shape, along with eating healthy, and she always had her hair up in a perfect high ponytail, with her makeup done to perfection.

When I became the junior captain for varsity football this year, she found a new liking to me.

And lets be honest, I'm not complaining.

I nod my head at her and spot Kyle.

I walk up to him and am greeted by a high five.

"What's up J?" He asks.

"Nothing much. You?" I ask.

"Just enjoying a great Friday" Kyle smirks "Living my best life"

Kyle has been teen royalty at this school since freshman year, his dad was the principal, which basically got him everything.

He had all the girls, a lot of friends, and is the quarterback.

That's what I call a teenage dream.

The warning bell rang causing lockers to close and the halls to get busy.

I start walking to my first hour, math.

My worst subject...

"See you guys later!" I yell, exiting the locker room after practice.

My mom had already texted saying I didn't have to pick up Ryan today, mostly because she was meeting with Ryans teacher.

I take my normal route, cutting through the music hallway.

But today was different.

And just like that I was leaning against the risers in the choir room, listening to Melody.

She wasn't in here after school since Monday, and I haven't seen her in class or in the hallways, I'm guessing she was sick.

She seemed fine on Monday.

When she was done singing I started clapping making her jump.

"You have to stop doing that" She whispers.

"Well hello to you too!" I smile, walking around and sitting in front of her.

"Shouldn't you be with your football buddies?" She asks, plucking at the guitar strings.

I put my hand over my heart, pretending to be offended "They aren't the only people I hang out with"

"Yeah sure" She scoffs.

"How would you know? You haven't been here all week" I state.

"Aw, You noticed, what. did you miss me?" She smirks.

"Pft No" I scoff.

"Sure you didn't, you wouldn't have noticed if you didn't care" She smiles, setting the guitar down.

"Okay, Maybe I missed you a little" I say.

"Wow, after maybe four minutes of hanging out, Impressive" She states.

"It wasn't four minutes" I say.

"Right. It was two minutes of you standing behind me listening to me sing and then four of talking" She smiles.

"You are something Melody Jackson" I chuckle.

She nods "Glad someone here likes my humor"

"You're the perfect amount of sarcastic and funny, and it just is perfect" I state.

She hides behind her hair "Thanks"

"Don't get all bashful on me now" I say, tucking her hair behind her ear.

She swats my hand away "Don't touch my hair" She warns.

"Ow okay" I smile, putting my hands up in defense "Where were you anyway?"

"At home, I didn't feel like coming to school" She shrugs.

"Seriously? My mom would never go for that" I scoff, leaning back in my chair.

"My uncle is pretty chill about it" She explains.

"Good grades?" I ask.

"Straight As"

"What about tests, if your not here how do you pass?"

"Photographic memory" She states, pointing to her head.

"Wait seriously?" I ask.

"No dumbass, I study" She laughs "That was a great reaction though"

"Haha, very funny" I mock.

"I know!" She smiles.

"I still don't understand" I say, running my hand through my hair.

"What?" She asks.

"Why don't you talk at school?" I ask.

"I have my reasons" she states "I told you, I'm shy"

"You sure don't act like it around me"

"That's because..." She pauses knowing she's been caught.

I cross my arms, amused that I caught her.

"It's just hard for me to make friends" She explains.

"You made me your friend pretty fast" I scoff.

She looks over at me, between her hair that was in front of her eyes "I didn't know you considered me your friend"

"Well now you know"

She smiles and shakes her head.

"Are you coming to the game tonight?" I ask.

"Nope" She says, grabbing her guitar and standing up "I don't do sports"

She walks over to the guitar stand and sets the guitar on it.

"You've never been to a football game?" I ask.

"No" She sighs.

"You're kidding"

"I'm not, sports aren't my sport" She laughs a little at her own joke.

"You have to come to one game! That's like, the rules of high school" I state.

"Since when?" She questions.

"Since forever" I insisted.

"Yeah sure" She giggles.

"By the end of this year I will get you to a football game" I state.

"Have fun with that" She laughs, grabbing her bag.

I get up and grab my bag as well, walking over to her.

We walk out of the room together, her closing the doors and locking them.

"There is no way I'm going to a football game" She states.

"I'll annoy you till you do" I say.

"I'm very strong-willed" She nods.

"I'm going to get you to crack, just watch me" I say, as we walk outside, the cool fall air hitting us.

"Whatever" She smiles "I gotta get home, I promised my aunt I would help with dinner"

"Okay, see you on Monday!" I yell, as we walk away from each other.

She giggles and waves, walking over to her car.

I walk over to my car and get in, starting it and driving out of the parking lot with a roar.
