Road Trip: Part One (Why is Darcy here?)
BECCA's POV
"What are you doing?!" I screech as I see that Cassidy tries—and fails—to grab some sour candy from the bag. The car hits a bump on the road, and sugar from the candy bag flies onto Cassidy's lap. She brushes it off onto the car floor. I gasp, "Don't you dare do that to my van! Do you realize how much time it took to save enough money to buy it?" I sigh. "You know you're going to have to vacuum that when we get back to Concord."
"Mm-hm." Cassidy replies, stuffing herself to candy.
I keep my eyes on the road. Cassidy is riding shotgun next to me, with Emma, Jess and Megan with the most space in the back. Megan is blasting music so loud on her phone that we can all hear it, even if she has her headphones plugged in. Although I don't mind listening to some good Selena Gomez songs once in a while.
Jess and Emma are talking to each other about some book they were reading the other day. It's five o'clock in the morning. I can't wait for the next hour when we get to a rest stop and I can finally switch drivers seat with someone else. Which reminds me... I look in the dashboard mirror to lock gazes with my friends. "Who's driving next?"
They all look amongst each other. Megan pulls off her headphones and says, "Maybe I should do it. It could give me a chance to practice my driving skills."
Emma remarks, "Well look at me! I didn't get to drive for the past week back in Concord."
Jess sighs, not even taking part of the actual conversation at hand. "I wish Darcy could have come with us." Cassidy practically snorts out sugar from her nose at this response, and I grimace at the thought of cleaning up after her later on. Then I tell Jess, "Well, this was supposed to be girls week. It wouldn't exactly work if Darcy—or any of the guys—was here."
A voice pops in at that moment. A deep voice. "Oh, then sorry for disturbing your girls week." The voice was so sudden and startled me so badly that I almost swerve off the road. In the back of van, Emma, Jess and Megan are twisting around in their seats to get a good look at who said that. It's Darcy himself, sitting in the very very back of the van, where he had been seemingly hiding under a tarp.
Cassidy twists around in her seat. "Hey Darcy!"
I hear Megan lash out, "What on earth do you think you're doing?!"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm hanging out with the girls!" I roll my eyes when he says it.
Emma says, "You heard us, it's girls week. You can't be here."
"Sure I can, Emma. Why do you think I'm here right now?"
"I've been asking myself the same question at this point."
Jess hasn't said a word since Darcy made an appearance, but she just sat in her seat in bewilderment and flushed. She finally speaks, "Nice to see you Darcy."
"Hello, dear," he answers back cheerfully, which makes Jess blush even harder.
I roll my eyes so hard that I'm afraid I'm going to crash the van with my eyes not on the road. Speaking of which, "Guys, the rest stop is in the next mile. I'm going to stop the vehicle there so that we can switch drivers and deal with this Darcy problem. Also Darcy, I really hope that you didn't drag my brother along with this, even though I know very well that Emma would want that so badly right now."
Even though my eyes are glued to the road in front of me, searching for any signs saying where to rest stop is, I can practically imagine Darcy rolling his eyes at my remark. He answers, "Actually, Stewart decided to stay in Concord for a while, then he's going to come join us by meeting us by taking the train."
"WHAT??!!"
Darcy grins, "Just kidding." Emma punches him in the stomach, making him keel over and slump back into his hiding place for a few seconds. Then, once he recovered, he emerges once again. Jess asks, "Why are you here?"
Cassidy, who has been eating sour candy this whole time, pipes in, "He shouldn't be here." She grabs another fistful of candy and pours it into her inclined mouth. Mouth full, she continues, "Let's throw him out once we get to the rest stop or something."
"Why wait?" Megan says deviously, grinning from the back seat.
Emma answers, "It's too late for that. Look out the window." We all do, and we see the rest stop coming into view. I pull the van off the highway into the rest stop parking lot. We all jump out of the van, not including Darcy. He stays in the back and waits for us to pop open the trunk so that we can talk to him. It feels good to finally be able to stretch my legs. Since it's nearly six in the morning by now, which means the parking lot is practically deserted and there's probably close to no one in the eating area of the rest stop. In fact, "Maybe someone should go inside and get us some breakfast," I suggest.
Cassidy perks up at this. "That's a good idea. I'm hungry."
We all groan, "You're always hungry, Cassidy!"
She shrugs, "I'll go in then."
Megan says, "I'll come with you, just in case you go overboard buying unnecessary food."
"Yeah good idea," I agree. "Although you can get as much food as you want. We need it for the ride."
Megan and Cassidy leave to go inside, leaving Emma, Jess and myself outside with the car to deal with Darcy. What are we going to do with him?
A/N: hey guys! It's been a while since I've updated this. Hope you liked this chapter.
What have you guys been reading lately? I just finished reading Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things to Mend by Katie Finn, as well as Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare. They were both pretty good, especially the latter! I am going to be reading Winter, by Marissa Meyer now, and I am so pumped to read it! Eep! :-D
If you have any suggestions for later stories for mdbc, I would gladly be open to any comments you leave behind for me!
