Irreplaceable
You'll need to read "Flames" from my one shot challenge book in order to understand what's going on here.
- Sequel to Flames - Requested by @X_EmLee_X
It was chaos, everybody pushing about and shoving each other. Reporters wanted details of what had happened, photographers wanted images of the victims.
Usually Jesse would be there to calm down her citizens, keeping things in order. But for tonight, Radar had to do. He tried raising his small voice to get attention, but nobody bothered to even look in his direction. Luckily with the help of a few other friends of the Order, such as Stampy, Stacy and Nell, they were able to keep the crowd away from the ambulances.
"Do you know if they're OK?" Nell asked as they were finally able to rest.
"Was anybody severely hurt?" Stampy added anxiously.
Radar shook his head as he leaned against a lamppost, catching his breath.
"I'm not sure." He admitted. "I only managed to get little pieces of the story. Jesse was stuck inside the building by the sound of things, Petra went back in find her."
"And?" The other three asked in unison, they're faces filled with anticipation.
"They're both being rushed to hospital last I heard." Radar announced, his voice grim. They all inhaled sharply.
"Petra's stable, they just want to give her a proper check-up to be sure. It's Jesse I'm worried about."
--------------------
Jesse wasn't sure what was happening around her any more. She remembered vaguely looking over at the heartbreaking sight of their home. Part of the roof collapsing, clouds of smoke rising up into the dark night sky. She remembered the flames, visible through just about every window, sizzling and cracking.
She vaguely remembered getting an injection, and hearing something about "hospital". After that, everything was a blur.
When Jesse properly came to again, she was in an unfamiliar place. She woke up in a bed, her head resting on a soft pillow. Her throat felt dry, and there was a dull pain pulsing through her forehead. The corners of her vision were slightly fuzzy, and the light stung her eyes. With every breath she took, it felt like someone was impaling a knife into her chest.
Jesse became aware of the fact that she was wearing thin, white clothing. Her right arm was bandaged tightly, and she was unable to move her left foot.
Jesse turned her head slightly to look around her, letting out a soft moan as the movement increased the throbbing in her head.
"Jesse?" A voice asked instantly, a figure stepping up to her side.
Jesse felt a warm hand clasp around hers, as she looked up towards the owner of the voice.
"You're awake." Olivia said, smiling down at her.
"What happen-" Jesse started, before her words were cut off by a cough.
"Here." Olivia said quickly, helping Jesse sit upright and giving her a glass of water.
Jesse drank it thirstily, feeling relieved as the cool liquid made it's way down her dry throat.
"What happened?" She repeated once she had finished, looking over at Olivia. "Where am I?"
Olivia looked exhausted as well, wearing a slightly over-sized jacket on top of what appeared to be her sleepwear. Her black hair was loose and uncombed.
"You're in hospital." She explained. "You've inhaled a lot of smoke, and you have some serious burn marks."
Jesse nodded at the explanation, leaning back down onto the pillow.
"Everything happened so fast." She said softly. "I woke up, and... I had no idea what was going on. I just couldn't breathe, there was smoke everywhere.."
Jesse turned her head towards Olivia again as she spoke.
"I was worried you guys didn't get out." She said softly.
"We all got out before you." Olivia explained, sitting down on a chair beside Jesse's bed. "You took longer to wake up and we didn't notice. By the time we did, we couldn't go back in for you."
Suddenly those words resurrected another bit of Jesse's memory. She jolted up in a sitting position, her eyes wide.
"Petra! Petra saved me!" Jesse gasped. "Is she OK?"
"Calm down, calm down." Olivia reassured, gently squeezing Jesse's hand.
"Petra is fine. She inhaled quite some smoke and has a few minor burns, but nothing serious. She's already been released from hospital."
Jesse breathed a sigh of relief, leaning back. "How long have I been here?" She asked Olivia.
"Only for the night." Olivia explained. "The doctor said you should be fine to go home today."
Jesse looked down at her hands, absent-mindedly fiddling with her sleeve.
"What's wrong?" Olivia asked, comfortingly running her fingers across Jesse's hand.
"We don't have a home to go back to though... do we?" Jesse asked softly, sniffing slightly.
"Oh, Jesse." Olivia said sympathetically, pulling Jesse into a hug.
She didn't try to push the topic away, because it was true. The Order Hall had been burned to the ground.
--------------------
Luckily Radar came around to the hospital shortly after, to hear if everybody were OK. He immediately offered that they stay over at his place until the Order Hall gets rebuild.
They were reluctant, not wanting to take advantage of his kindness. But alas, they had no where to go and, especially Jesse, needed a place to stay and recover.
"You're sure we won't be intruding?" Lukas asked again, as they all bundled in on the back seat of Radar's tiny car.
Jesse, who's barely said a word since they left the building, got to sit at the front with Radar.
"Absolutely not!" Radar said quickly, as he got into the drivers seat. "In fact, I'm slightly honoured to have the Order staying at my house."
"We honestly can't thank you enough." Olivia said, as they left the hospital's parking lot.
"No need to thank me." Radar insisted.
It was a quiet drive home. Well, quiet if you didn't count the fact that Radar kept humming various tunes while he drove.
On the back seat, Olivia sat on the right side, leaning her head against the window, her eyes threatening to close. Axel sat beside her, eating a chocolate bar that he found who knows where. Lukas sat beside him, deep in thought, as he fiddled with one of the loose threads on his pants.
Petra sat on the left side, casually tossing her bandanna from one hand to the other. The blue cloth's one side was slightly hardened and black where it came into contact with the flames, but other than that it was still in a pretty good condition.
Jesse sat in front beside Radar, staring out of the window. She had her eyes fixed on the buildings they were passing, but she didn't really acknowledge them. Her expression was distant and unresponsive.
The others had shrugged it off, deciding that she either still wasn't feeling very well, or that she was just tired.
"Here we are." Radar proudly announced as he stopped the car outside a small cottage.
It was mainly made out of acacia planks, as well stone bricks. Trimmed rose bushes were spread throughout the garden, and a large birch tree cast a shadow over the yard.
"Are we all going to fit in there?" Axel whispered to the others as they got out, earning a nudge from Olivia.
"Please excuse the mess inside." Radar said as he unlocked the door. "I wasn't really expecting guests."
He opened the door to reveal a cozy little living room. It was very neat, the leather couches symmetrically places across from each other.
A vase stood on the coffee table, two vibrant orange lilies place in it and filling the room with a sweet aroma.
A grey cat was laying on one of the couches, lazily licking it's front paw. He turned his gaze, examining the guests with a glance, before proceeding to groom himself.
"What mess?" Lukas whispered with a chuckle, looking around the neat room.
"Please make yourself at home." Radar said to them, as he lead Olivia and Jesse to one of the guest rooms.
Jesse was slightly leaning on Olivia, not very balanced, as she had to use crutches to walk.
"Are you sure we can sit down?" Petra asked with a grin. "What if we move the couches a centimetre out of symmetry?"
Everybody laughed.
Radar's cat purred, rubbing his head against Lukas' knee when he sat down. Lukas lifted the cat onto his lap, scratching his ears.
"Seems like he likes you." Radar said, walking back into the room. Olivia followed behind him.
"I've always been a cat person." Lukas replied, running his fingers along the cat's back and making him purr in delight.
"How's Jesse doing?" Axel asked as Olivia and Radar sat down as well.
"She fell right asleep." Olivia said. "I think it's the medication, causing her to become drowsy."
"Has anybody noticed that she's been acting a bit off, though?" Petra asked, crossing her legs underneath her on the couch.
She didn't seem to care as some of the mud on her feet was smudged onto Radar's couch.
"She's been really quiet, yes." Lukas agreed as he continued to cuddle the cat.
"I think she's just tired." Olivia shrugged it off.
"She'll be back to her good old cheery self as soon as she's had a few hours of decent sleep."
--------------------------------
"Are you freaking kidding me!"
A frustrated voice woke Jesse up. She opened her eyes, looking up at the unfamiliar ceiling. Letting out a small sigh, she sat up, looking around for the owner of the voice that had woken her.
It was slightly dark in the room, only a few golden sun rays peeking through the drawn curtains. Probably afternoon already.
Somebody sat on the bed opposite of Jesse's, their figure silhouetted against the window.
"Petra?" Jesse asked groggily, recognizing her red hair and blue bandanna instantly.
Petra looked around quickly.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you?" She quickly apologized, looking guilty.
"Nah, I wasn't sleeping very deeply." Jesse shrugged it off, rubbing her tired eyes. "Is something getting on your nerves?"
"You bet it is." Petra said, turning her whole body around so she was facing Jesse.
She held up a cellphone with a green backside. It kind of looked like Radar's phone.
"Radar has some pretty crappy games on this thing!" Petra said, waving the cellphone around carelessly. "All he's got on here are some of those annoying puzzle games. I can't play those things for more than five minutes before wanting to literally pull my hair out."
She tossed the phone onto the pillow, before falling backwards, dramatically, with her arms and legs spread out over the bed.
"What am I supposed to be doing for entertainment?!"
Jesse smiled vaguely, shaking her head. Typical Petra.
"Where are the others?" She asked, as Petra stood up and walked over to her bed, sitting down on the end of it.
"Radar and Lukas left ages ago." Petra explained, putting extra emphasis on "ages".
"Think it has something to do with the construction stuff, don't know, don't really care.
Olivia is in the kitchen at this moment, trying to make dinner, while Axel is following her around like a dog begging for scraps."
Jesse chuckled faintly, shaking her head.
"I'd prefer to be out doing something as well-" Petra went on "-But they keep insisting I rest, after the whole incident."
"I'd rather not ask how you ended up with Radar's cellphone for entertainment then." Jesse said with a shake of her head, laying back down.
"It's his own fault he left it on the dining table in clear view." Petra said with a shrug.
Jesse only nodded. She had something else on her mind at that moment.
"Petra." She finally said. "I never got to thank you."
"Thank me for what?" Petra asked, lifting an eyebrow.
"You saved my life yesterday." Jesse replied softly. "I never would've been able to get out of that building without you."
"I'm well aware." Petra said as she playing nudged Jesse.
Jesse only smiled at her, before turning her head to look out of the window.
Petra frowned at her friend's mood.
"Jesse?" She asked softly, touching Jesse's hand to get her attention. "Is something wrong?"
Jesse shook her head slightly, not tearing her gaze away from the window. Petra turned to look outside too, wondering if Jesse saw something. But all she could see were the various branches of the birch tree.
"OK, what's wrong?" Petra asked again, crossing her arms.
Jesse turned her head to look at Petra, and Petra was surprised to see tears brimming her eyes. Immediately her firm voice softened, and she took Jesse's hand in hers.
"Are you OK?" Petra asked gently.
"Just thinking." Jesse shrugged it off, wiping her eyes on her sleeve.
"About?"
"Everything."
Petra frowned. "I'm afraid you lost me there."
"Our home." Jesse replied softly. "We were watching TV there yesterday, you and Axel started throwing each other with jelly beans.... And only hours later everything's gone."
"It did happen very suddenly." Petra agreed. "Radar spoke to the fire-fighters, but they were unable to find what started the fire. All evidence has been burned away."
Jesse didn't reply. However, Petra's words brought fresh tears to her eyes.
"Hey, I know it's bad." Petra said, shuffling over so she was sitting beside Jesse.
"But at least we're all OK, right? The Order Hall is being rebuild. Soon, it'll be like it never happened."
Jesse looked up at her, smiling sadly.
"I know you're right. And I'm grateful that we're all OK, it's just..."
"Just what?" Petra asked softly.
"Some things are just irreplaceable."
I'm not exactly proud of this one shot. I feel like it's just a bunch of dialogue with barely anything exciting. Meh, writer's block is a pain.
I might be slightly less active soon. School starts again in a few days and even though I/m home-schooled, it's still going to take up a lot of time. My computer got fixed as well, so I'm going to spend some extra time on video editing as well.
Nonetheless, hope you guys enjoyed this! I'll see you soon with another one shot :P
