Chapter 22
~America~
I was weak. I felt weak. I couldn't do anything for myself. The worst part, I couldn't move. Luckily my family was here. If it wasn't for Lucas I would be dead. The worst part was that the doctor said that was only the beginning.
I had been asleep for about two days. One day for treatment, the second day the medicine was wearing off. I had learned that my mother had sent a letter to Maxon. What she put in it I have no idea. When I woke up I heard them talking about Marissa. They probably asked if she would be able to return home for a few days.
All I could think about was my father. He had a heart attack, and died from it during my Selection. Now it's happening to Marissa, only I didn't die. At least not yet.
The door to my room opens, and in walks May. She walks over to the side of my bed, and sits down.
"How are you feeling Ames?" She asks.
"How good can a person get after a heart attack? Because I probably feel worse than that," I joke.
May has a small smile on her lips. She feels my head. "We got a call this morning. It was Maxon. He said Marissa was going to come home for a few days, then return to the palace to finish out the Selection," May says.
"Good. It'll be nice to see her. Even if it has been about a week and a half."
May lets a small laugh escape her lips. "Mom has chicken noodle soup made if you want some."
I smile. "I'd like that."
"Okay. I'll be back up in a few minutes."
May gets off the bed, and leaves the room. I'm left starring at the door waiting for it to open again. I decide instead of starring right at the door, to look around the room. Looking over at the nightstand I find the ring. I feel my fingers for it, but not find it. I reach over and grab the ring. Nothing has happened to it. I slip it back on my finger. Just as I get it back on May opens the door again. She has a tray, and a bowl of soup on it.
"Thank you," I say as I take the tray from her. I nurse the soup, as May sits at the end of my bed.
After a few minutes of silence she says, "I was able get your ring back. I know how much Maxon means to you."
I smile. I had forgotten I told May about the ring. I looked down at it, and smiled some more. I missed Maxon so much. What would I give to see him again. It hurt me so much to see him with Kriss. I know I messed up. Big time. If only I could go back and correct my mistake. I let out a sigh.
"I know. You miss him. Maybe one day you two can make things right," May says placing a hand on my knee.
"We already have. When he was here for the festival we talked. We spent time together. We realized both of our lives were living hell's because of our stupid actions," I say with a small laugh.
May let a small laugh out too. "Does anyone know about this?"
"Kind of. Marissa and Lucas know about him, they saw me come in one night from the tree house. I don't know if they know about the rest of the meetings."
"Oh so there was more than one meeting. Do tell," May says leaning on her elbow.
We both share a laugh. Then I tell her what happened during the festival.
