CHAPTER 13

"Travis?" I asked, more confused than ever about why he was here.

He went to our rival school and suddenly showed up here out of nowhere.

"Hey, Sam..." he scratched the back of his neck before nodding toward the seat beside me. "Mind if I sit?"

"Fuck no, get away from her." Skye piped in, her voice laced with harshness.

Sammy and Ryan exchanged faces of confusion as they glanced back at Travis.

"I, uh, just wanna talk to her." He ran his hand through his blonde hair, and she shook her head at him.

"No. Get away."

He laughed, but his laughter was dark. He shook his head as he looked up at the ceiling and brought his attention back to me. "You really going to let her talk for you, Sam? Wow, nothing changed, has it?"

I was speechless, due to the fact I thought I'd never see him again. The last time I'd seen him was when we broke up for the final time, I had found out he was cheating on me...again.

The table was quiet as I stared up at the boy I thought loved me, "Travis, get the hell away from our table." I spat, rage filling my entire body.

"Oh? Looks like you decided to grow a backbone. Congratulations."

"If you just came here to talk shit then you can leave." Sammy pipped into the conversation making me snap my head back at him. I was shocked he even stood up for me.

"Huh, you must be Sammy. The boy that made her come home crying every night."

Sammy opened his mouth about to say something but closed it before giving me a look of sympathy. His eyes lowered to his hand, and the laugh from Travis erupted again.

"Anyway, I'm enrolled in this school now. I figured, huh, Sam goes here so let me talk to her to clear the air, but forget that." He glared at me with his icy blue eyes, and my eyes watered as memories from our relationship came flooding back in.

All the trauma he had put me through, and all the late nights I had spent crying because he had done something to hurt my feelings just to wake up to not a single text from him in the morning.

"Sam..." Skye brought me out of my thoughts, looking up at her as she reached to grab my hand for comfort. "He's gone."

I looked behind me to realize he had walked away finally, and let a long sigh out.

"Who was that guy?" Ryan looked behind me as if he was searching for him again, and his body language wasn't as loving toward Skye anymore. It was more stiff as he clenched his jaw in anger. "I didn't want to start shit, so I hadn't said anything, but Sam, if he does anything let us know, okay?"

My mind was drawing a blank as I felt numb, the feelings of when Travis and I were together were coming back.

"Sam?" Sammy stood up and kneeled to my side, "Did I really make you cry every night?"

"That's all you got out of that conversation?" I whipped my head toward Sammy and his eyes grew at my sudden outburst. "That's my ex for all of you to know, and I'm done dealing with this." I stood up abruptly and started to walk away from the table to find the nearest bathroom.

"Sam!" Skye called out, and I could hear her footsteps running after me but I walked faster to get away from all three of them.

I made it to the bathroom and ended up closing myself in a stall as my breathing started to get heavier.

Why did he enroll here?

Why couldn't he just stay in his stupid school so I didn't have to see him every day?

I was finally getting over him, but seeing him just woke up everything that was pushed to the back of my head.

I squeezed my eyes shut as I leaned my back against the wall with tears running down my face.

"Sam!" I heard footsteps running into the bathroom, and already knew it was Skye.

I saw her pink sneakers from under the door and ended up pushing the door open to let her in. Once she caught a glimpse of me her lips turned in a slight frown.

"I'm so sorry, I don't know why he's here." She pulled my arm, bringing me out of the bathroom as she sat her backpack on the counter. "We can skip the next few classes?"

I shrugged before looking in the mirror to catch a glimpse of myself and moved my eyes back to Skye once I realized I was a complete mess with my makeup.

"I can't be in the same school as him, Skye. The way he drained me before...every time I see him I just am remembering what happened in the past."

"I understand," she frowned as she wiped my tears then started to unzip her bag to grab a smaller bag out. "But hey, Ryan is our friend now and he said if Travis ever does anything he will literally make sure he doesn't show up to this school again." She added, unzipping the bag to reveal her makeup, making me smile at her small gesture.

"Yeah, I guess so." I shrugged a shoulder with a long sigh, "I'm sorry for overreacting, it was just such a sudden thing to happen." I waved off the situation, wiping away the smeared makeup on my eyes.

"No! No! We are not going to jump over your feelings." Skye lightly whacked me with her makeup brush before grabbing out a concealer.

I giggled before rolling my eyes playfully, "But really, sorry for running out on you guys. I even feel slightly bad for getting a temper with Sammy, I mean, he surprisingly did stand up for me." I pursed my lips out in thought of Sammy making a nice gesture.

It was odd but much appreciated.

A grin was forming on Skye's lips and I tilted my head at her as she handed me the concealer, "What?" I asked.

"Oh, nothing. I think Sammy is a nicer guy than you had originally thought." She teased, and all I did was stare at her with a blank expression.

"Yeah, no. Doesn't change the hate I have for him."

"Whatever..." Skye trailed her word out as I applied some concealer under my eyes along with some mascara to make it seem like I wasn't just balling my eyes out.

"Thanks, Skye." I gave her a half smile before pulling her into a tight hug and she gave me a quick squeeze before pulling away.

"I'll always be here for you, alright?" She assured me as she started to pack more of her makeup inside her bag. "Now, wanting to skip?" She wiggled her eyebrows.

"If I skipped my parents would kill me."

"Okay? Let them." She shrugged her shoulder as she slung her backpack onto her shoulder.

"I'll pass this time, but maybe next time." I winked before making my way out of the bathroom.

"Damn it! You're no fun!" She called out as her voice echoed off the walls, making me laugh.

With that, we were off to our next classes.

"It's freezing! Stop stealing all the blankets!" I exclaimed, pulling onto the big orange blanket I had brought for myself.

Keyword...myself.

But here I was, sharing a blanket with Sammy who was sitting right beside me on the bleachers as we watched the football game.

"You want me to freeze to death? I see how it is. First my hand and now this?" He motioned to himself he didn't have any blankets on him at all.

"Yeah," I replied in a duh tone and scooted far away from him. "I can't believe Skye forced you to sit with me."

"She told me to keep you company...and also bribed me with $20." He smiled as if he was accomplished, making me roll my eyes.

"Shouldn't you be playing down on the field?" I ignored his comment, making a small remark and he gave me a blank expression.

"Yeah, I should be but someone broke my hand so I'm benched the rest of the season." He raised his cast which was a bright orange color with multiple names written on it, making my head light up with an idea.

"Oh! Let me write something." I demanded, moving my hand out as I wiggled my hands for a marker.

He stared at me for a long moment before sighing and pulling a marker out of his back pocket.

"I knew you would be carrying a marker around," I bit my lip as I held laughter in, and took the cap off as I looked up at the sky in thought. "Hm, let's see." I tapped the marker against my chin, making him pull his cast away.

"On second thought, I don't trust you." He glared at me, and I reached for his cast once more.

"No! Trust, please? It'll be funny." I begged, giving him the best puppy dog eyes I could and it worked right away once he plopped his hand into my lap.

"Don't do anything dumb." He said as the crowd started to cheer around us, everyone standing up. Lucky for me, this caught his attention as his eyes were glued onto the field with one of our players making a touchdown.

I ended up writing 'Sam is my favorite person in the world' onto his cast in black Sharpie. I tilted my head at it and smiled once I felt accomplished.

It's stupid, yeah, but that's the point!

His eyes did a double take once he realized I had finished, "Sam, what the hell is this?" He raised his hand in the air as his eyes squinted to be sure he was reading it right. "Sam is my favorite person in the world?"

"I know she is." I chuckled, handing the marker back to him but all he did was roll his eyes.

"You wish."

"No, I know."

"You could never be anyone's favorite person."

Ouch.

My eyes lowered to my lap as I brushed off the comment, and he ended up realizing the sudden change in my mood because he leaned down to get a better look at my face.

"Shit, sorry Sam. Sometimes I'm harsh with words." He apologized, and I flickered my eyes around his face to see if it was a real apology or if he was being sarcastic.

He was being serious though, his eyes were flickering around my face as he was trying to read me as well, making me end up smiling in return.

"It's all good." I playfully pushed his shoulder, and he chuckled once I did so with his eyes crinkling and his one dimple on his left cheek to be shown.

"Since we are on apologies, I'm sorry for getting an attitude with you in the lunch room today. I was heated, and you were right there." I explained, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.

It felt weird being nice to him.

"Thanks, Sam, and one more thing, if I ever make you go home crying again, let me know what I said so I know in the future to not go so far."

My cheeks started to turn red as he apologized for that. It was something I never wanted anyone to know, especially him. Good thing it was dark out because he probably would think the red in my cheeks would be me blushing.

But it's actually me being quite embarrassed at him knowing that bit of information.

"You didn't make me cry." I lied, and he tilted his head to the side for a moment.

"You're weirded out by all this cheesy nice shit, understood. Your handwriting is trash." He smirked, changing the subject and I mentally thanked him for realizing how awkward I felt.

"Thanks, Sammy." I rolled my eyes as they landed on the cheerleaders doing a cheer.

"You know since our best friends are dating and all...I think we need to push aside our hate and call ourselves friendenemies." I could hear the sarcasm in his voice, but at the same time, I knew he was being serious.

I turned my head toward him as I debated it for a second, and figured he was right.

"Friendenemies but I still hate you." I handed my hand out, and he smirked down at my hand.

"Deal." He took my hand in his as an agreement, shaking my hand slightly.
