Week One Prompts
Wednesday, March 1st - Wednesday, March 8th
(I'm posting this early so everyone can get a head start)
Oh, gosh, I'm so excited, our first week, eeek! Okay, give me a moment to compose myself. Week one and we already have some amazing International Days to celebrate! Bring out the flowers, keyboards, and thinking hats (and maybe a little chocolate too) cause it's time to get rolling!
Prompt One: World Music Therapy Day! (Celebrated March 1st)
If anyone knows me, they know music is a big part of my life, so I just had to add this in! This doesn't need to be solely about music therapy but music in general or even an instrument. Anything music and you're solid, promise no one will kick you out if you're a little off ;) If you choose to write this prompt, your poetry style is a Cinquain. This style is basic but to the point, and it's used to explain the main ideas in just a few words.
This is a five-line poem, non-rhyming, and the lines follow a specific pattern that goes like this:
Line 1: Subject (one word)
Line 2: Two words to describe the subject
Line 3: Three action verbs, each ending in -ing
Line 4: Four words to describe the subject
Line 5: A synonym for the subject (one word)
Here's an example:
Prompt Two: World Book Day! (Celebrated March 3rd)
Okay, how perfect is this?! In honor of books and all things written, if you decide to write this prompt, your task should be done in a Shakespearean Sonnet. These are mostly used to express love, and don't we all love books here?! I know I do!
Now I know this may seem daunting, but I'll break it down for you.
The sonnet's broken down into four parts, three are Quatrain (four-lined stanzas) and the last stanza is a Rhyming Couplet.
The rhyming is done as such:
First stanza: ABAB
Second stanza: CDCD
Third Stanza: EFEF
Fourth Stanza: GG
The trick is to sound pretentious when you write a Shakespearean Sonnet! Here's an example below:
Prompt Three: International Women's Day! (Celebrated March 8th)
This one's for all the ladies out there! I see you, looking beautiful as always! Fellas, don't be discouraged, and write a poem for all those women out there. Could be your mom, sister, aunt, best friend, or just women in general.
If you want to write a poem for this prompt, the poetry style will be an Ode. This poem is meant to praise a person, group, or thing and it's usually serious.
Writing this kind of poem should be less scary, but hopefully just as fun!
For this poetry structure, there is no specific rhyme scheme or syllable count, however, the use of metaphors, similes, and hyperboles are very common, and it's usually very exaggerated. It can be about 6-20 lines and describe your feelings on the subject. There are so many ways to write Ode poems, but I'll give you one example to go off of:
Well, folk, there you have it! This week's prompts! Start typing away and creating those masterpieces, I'll be waiting :)
