Chapter 3
So, it seems like people actually like this story? I'm not completely sure why, but I'm very glad you're all enjoying it!
Katherine was sitting at the desk in her room, perfectly content with a mug of tea and her laptop, doing research for an assignment. It was fairly late at night, her parents were out, and she definitely wasn't expecting any visitors. So, when she heard someone knocking loudly on her window, she practically jumped out of her skin. She wasn't terribly surprised when she looked over to find Jack Kelly on her fire escape. She was tempted to ignore him, but she knew he probably wouldn't leave until she talked to him, so she got up and opened the window, and he immediately climbed through.
"Nice room." He remarked, and whistled appreciatively as he looked around. She ignored that.
"What the hell, Jack?"
"What?"
"It's 11:30 at night, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, what, a guy can't have suddenly decide to visit his friend late at night?"
"You're not my friend, Jack, you're my fake boyfriend. Why are you here?"
"Okay, you're right. We need to kiss." Jack told Katherine seriously.
"Excuse me?"
"We need to kiss! I was thinking, and if we're gonna make this believable, we need to be at least a little more... Intimate when we're in public."
"And we need to do that by kissing?"
"Not right away, we have to work up to that." He explained. "But if we kiss tonight, then it won't be so uncomfortable when we do it in front of people in a few weeks."
"Oh my god..." Katherine groaned. He was right, they both knew it. "And we have to do it now?"
"Well, I'm here now, so it would be convenient, yeah."
"Okay. Fine."
"Okay."
"So, should we sit down, or...?"
"Oh! Oh yeah we probably should. Is the bed okay?" Katherine nodded. Things were already awkward between the two of them, and they hadn't done anything yet. They sat down on the bed and just sat there for a while, watching each other. Katherine eventually got tired of it and began to lean in, but Jack immediately pulled back.
"What was that for?" She asked in an accusatory tone.
"The timing wasn't right."
"And when will the timing be right?"
"When we both feel like it's right."
"Well, that's very specific."
"Oh, I'm sorry if I'm not explaining it correctly, but that's how it is!"
"That doesn't make sense, we don't even like each other, the timing is never going to be right, so why can't we just get it over with?! I'll never understand - " Jack cut her off with a kiss, before quickly pulling back. He had honestly only meant to shut her up, but... she was not the worst kisser he'd ever come across. They both stared at each other. "Can you please leave now?" She asked him quietly, and he nodded before bolting towards the window, climbing out, and shutting it behind him.
oOo
Jack and Katherine avoided each other during school the next day, for no particular reason either of them could think of, besides what had happened the night before. Davey had obviously noticed this, because it seemed that Davey noticed everything, and he was getting very frustrated. So during lunch hour, instead of going to lunch, he dragged the two of them into the auditorium.
"Davey, what are you doing?" Katherine asked, mildly concerned. Jack nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, I'm kinda hungry Dave, why are we in here?"
"Well, too bad, we're all skipping lunch today." Jack opened his mouth to protest, but a glare from his friend quickly shut him down. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice?" Davey sighed at their confused expressions. "You two have been giving each other the cold shoulder all day!" Realization dawned on both of their faces. "If you keep acting like this, people are going to assume you broke up already. What's going on?"
"Nothing's going on." Jack told him, too quickly.
"It's not nothing, Jack."
"It really is nothing." Katherine interjected. "I mean it's not nothing, but it's barely something, so it's basically nothing."
"That makes no sense." Davey said bluntly, causing her to roll her eyes.
"Jack and I kissed last night, and it was a little awkward."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"You two need to get yourselves together! You're going to have to do a lot more kissing than just that, you can't just completely ignore each other every time it happens."
"Why do you even care?" Jack broke in. "This doesn't affect you."
"I care because you're my friends. I still don't think this is a good idea in the first place, but you obviously didn't listen to me about that, so I'm trying to help you make this work the best you can."
"Yeah, well why don't you try to just stay out of it, yeah?"
"Jack. I'm just trying to help you."
"We don't need your help Davey, especially not with something like this, so just keep out of it."
"Jack," Katherine began, but Jack just shook his head.
"I'll talk to you later, Katherine." He muttered as he stormed out of the auditorium, and as Katherine and Davey exchanged matching worried glances.
