Chapter 1

So here's this! The Highschool AU I've been planning since around June and am only just now getting written! Also: the cover for this story is not going to stay the same, I'm going to change it when I'm on my computer and have more time to do so. With all that aside, I hope you all enjoy this!

"Race. Go. Away." Jack slammed his locker door shut and began walking to his next class in a pointless attempt to get away from his friend, who simply followed him down the hall.

"Look, all I'm trying to say is you've been in a slump lately when it comes to girls. And if it's rejection you're worried about, I know plenty of ladies who'd be happy to go out with ya." Jack just scoffed.

"I ain't afraid of rejection. Now go away."

"I'm not going away til you tell me what you got against being I'm a relationship."

"Who says I have something against being in a relationship?" Jack stopped in front of his English class and crossed his arms.

"Uh, how about the fact the fact that you haven't been with a girl in the last five months." Race accused, giving him a pointed glare. Jack was really staring to get annoyed. He sighed.

"For your information, I have a girlfriend." He didn't, of course, but he needed to say something to get the other boy off his back. Race raised his eyebrows.

"Oh really? Who?" Crap. Jack hadn't exactly thought that far ahead. Just then, a girl who looked vaguely familiar tried to walk past them to get into the classroom.

"Excuse-" She started to say, before Jack grabbed her hand.

"Here she is now! Uh, Race, this is her. My girlfriend."

"...Katherine Plumber is your girlfriend?"

"Yeah she is. Isn't that right... Kath?" Jack looked at her with large pleading eyes, silently begging her to go along with it. She bit her lower lip for a few seconds, thinking, before quickly nodding.

"We've been together for about a week now." She assured Race, who was still looking at them both rather suspiciously.

"Okay... If you say so."

"We do." Katherine said, giving him a rather convincing smile.

"Right. Okay then. Good for you." Race gave them one last look before turning and walking away. Jack sighed in relief, his shoulders relaxing.

"You are a life saver. Thank you so much." He said, a tad over-dramatically, looking at Katherine.

"You're welcome... What's your name?" Jack felt slightly guilty that this girl he had just coerced into pretending to be his girlfriend had no idea who he was.

"Jack Kelly."

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Jack Kelly... I assume the whole, 'me pretending to be your girlfriend', thing was only temporary?"

"Uh, yeah about that, do you happen to have a free period after this?"

"Yes, why?"

"You wanna maybe meet up with me then and we can talk about it?"

"Okay. Sure, I guess." Katherine didn't really understand why they needed to talk about it, but she agreed anyway. Jack nodded.

"I'll see you then." He turned and walked into the classroom, and Katherine watched him go for a moment before quickly realizing she was probably less than two minutes away from being late, and quickly followed him into the room.

oOo

For Jack, English class seemed to drag by. It felt like time itself had slowed down just to spite him. He spent most of the class time trying to think of ways to get himself out of the mess he'd just gotten himself into with Race. Sure, Race was the only one he'd told, but that boy was not one to keep things to himself unless specifically told not to. Jack knew that by the end of the day everyone would have heard somewhere that he was dating Katherine Plumber, a girl he'd just met for the first time less than an hour ago. And he knew she probably wanted no part in this either, but she didn't really have a choice. So, he couldn't really see a way out of the lie he'd so hastily and thoughtlessly made up. But, he kept thinking about it until the bell finally rang and class was dismissed. He heard the teacher saying so,etching about homework as he left, but he didn't really care. He lingered just outside the door, anxiously waiting for Katherine. She came out after a few minutes and made her way over to Jack, a look of concern on her face.

"What is it exactly we need to talk about?" Jack shook his head.

"I'll tell you in a minute. Let's get somewhere more private first." He motioned for her to follow him, and she complied as he began walking. They came to a stop in front of a set of double doors in a part of the school Katherine had never been to before. Jack pulled a key out of his pocket and used it to unlock the door, and put it back in his pocket before opening the door to reveal an auditorium that was obviously used as a theater. Katherine looked at Jack in alarm.

"Are we allowed to be in here?" Jack laughed and entered the theater, leaving her with no choice but to follow.

"Relax, the drama teacher, Miss Medda, gave me a key a while back, said I could come in here anytime they weren't using it for a rehearsal."

"And why does she trust you of all people with this privilege?"

"Are you suggesting that I'm not trustworthy?" Jack asked her teasingly as he sat in one of the seats. Katherine sat next to him.

"I barely know who you are, so I obviously know nothing about you."

"Right, so you shouldn't be judging me like that." Katherine rolled her eyes.

"Really though, why did she give you the extra key? I'm pretty sure you don't participate I'm any theater productions."

"Nah," Jack shook his head. "I've known Miss Medda since I was a kid." Katherine could tell there was more to it than that, but there were other things that she decided were more important to hear about at the moment.

"So what do you need to talk to me about?"

"Uh, it's about what happened earlier."

"I figured that much. But why do we need to talk about that? I don't mind, if that's what you're worried about."

"No, it's not that."

"Then would you quit beating around the bush and say it already?"

"Okay, um, the 'you pretending to be my girlfriend' thing probably won't be so temporary." Katherine looked it him, confused.

"What do you mean? Why not?"

"Well, that was my friend Race that that happened in front of. And he's not very good at keeping his mouth shut."

"...and?"

"And I have lots of friends. Who also aren't very good at keeping their mouths shut."

"So you're saying that at least half of the school thinks we're dating by now?"

"Basically, yeah." Jack nodded sheepishly. Katherine groaned.

"We'll have to keep this up for a while, then."

"Probably at least a month."

"I guess... I guess it won't be too horrible."

"Oh c'mon, I'm not that bad."

"That will be determined as time goes on." Jack offered her a small grin, which she returned. They both knew that they had either just gotten into a harmless, short little adventure, or a horribly long, deep mess.
