Chapter 5
Great. Now she's going to come over! I don't want her to think any less of me then she already does, I think in my head. I hear a knock at the door. I can't believe she's here already!
"You shouldn't have come, you didn't need to-" Then I actually look to see who it is.
It's Beverly. He tilts his head with a weird look in his eyes, probably deciding if he should send me to the Nutjob house today or tomorrow. He smirks while I cringe.
"Um, ahem, well, uh, I didn't mean to, um, say that to... You..." I say, fumbling over my words. I put my hands on my face, covering it.
"No need to hide, it's OK. But... That would explain why you don't want me here." He walks towards my bed, sitting on the end of it. "So, uh, Sarah... I... I have some... really bad news." "Your not going to want to hear it, but... Rachel, your friend... Is... Um..."
"I know, I know, on her way here, right?" I say, exhaling and being overall frustrated. He gulps loudly.
"Um, no... Worse... She... Was walking here, and... A truck hit her. She's... Dead." I feel as of I am a anchor on peoples lives. I feel as if I killed her.
"She... Is she..." I trail off.
"Her body is in the room to the left of you. If you want, you can see her, I guess. After you see her, do you mind if we..."
"Go? OK." I finish for him. He bites his bottom lip, and frowns. Finally, he says,
"OK, let's go to her."
I enter her room. Her body is pale, and IV's are all over her. I have to look away. Not only did this look like my parents, but Jade and now Rachel! I haven't shed a tear for any of them yet, and I'm still holding all of it in.
Part of me thinks that all of this is fake, and that they are still living, and the other half can't believe that this is happening.
I sigh, and tuck a piece of her brown hair out her pale face to behind her ear. She looks content, but I feel a hole in my heart for all of them. I'll miss you all... I haven't seen my parents bodies, but that's because I just can't.
From what I've seen on TV, people who come out of car crashes don't look the same. They look..
Awful. I don't think I could bear seeing my parents like that.
Beverly taps me on the shoulder. "Are... Are you ready to go?" He asks timidly. I plaster on a fake smile and nod.
"Yep, let's go!" I say. Beverly blinks and kneels down to my height.
"Sarah, you... You don't have to be faking. I know how you feel... My brother... He got in a car accident too." He says. I hug him.
"I'm... Sorry for your loss." I say. He hugs back. He then let's go, shaking his head.
"Its OK. It was years ago. Well, we should get going, right?" I nod, and we walk out of the hospital, hand in hand.
°~Time skip~°
We walk into the adoption center, me looking around. An lady with her younger kid walk into the nail salon next door. The lady waves, and I wave back, smiling. Her daughter looks at me like I'm a waste of space on earth.
I ignore her, and continue walking. I feel a tug on the bottom of my shirt.
Its the little girl.
"Excuse me, but you dropped this." She holds up my pin that my Dad gave me on my birthday 3 years ago. I take it and pin it on my backpack. I smile at her.
"Thank you! I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have this..." I say. She nods. She's about to walk off, but she stops in her tracks.
"Can I ask you a question?" She says. Beverly motions at me to see if I'm coming. I hold up a finger, telling him one minute. He points to the door and pretends to sign papers, as if to say, can I go in and try to sort it out? I nod. I turn back to the girl, smiling.
"Yeah, of course! What is it, sweetie?" She smirks. Suddenly, she doesn't looks sweet...
"What's up with that tube in your nose? And why are you still living? Shouldn't you be dead if you can't breathe? People with cancer should just leave Earth! Daddy told me that. Plus, Daddy told me people with cancer go to hel-"
"ALLISON!? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Her mother screams at her daughter, her eyes wide. I blink, not fully understanding why that just happened. The little girl gives a fake innocent look at her mother.
"But I was just speaking the truth! And you say never to lie~" she says in a singsong voice. Her mother says something in her ear, too quietly for me to hear.
"I DON'T WANNA APOLOGIZE!! I WAS JUST SAYING WANT WAS TRUE!" The girl- or, Allison screams at her mother.
"Apologize, or your grounded for a... Month." Her daughter rolls her eyes, and stomps over to me, her eyes shooting invisible daggers at me.
"I'm sorry... That your gonna die soon~" she says, running off somewhere. Beverly finally runs back here, seeing the ending of the drama.
"I am so sorry, she isn't usually like this... Her father... Ever since the divorce..." She sighs, taking a breath, then looks back up at us. "Look, I'm sorry. She just... Doesn't like me very much. She either stays with her Dad or a babysitter. I haven't gotten one to stay yet, though. Anywho, her father isn't the best role model-"
"As if we couldn't see." Beverly says coldly. She nods, her curly brown hair bobbing.
"I know, I'm so sorry." she looks at her black truck and sees her daughter in it. Her daughter sticks her tongue out at us.
"Well, it was nice to meet you, and your just super sweet daughter." Beverly says. We turn around and start walking. The mother taps us.
"Wait!" She says. I turn. "If you ever need something, call me. Anything you need- money, home, food, water- just call. And again, I am so sorry." And with that, she walked back into her truck, and drove away.
"So, umm... Shall we go in?" Beverly said. I take his big hand in mine.
"Yes, Beverly, I think we should." And with that, after all that has just happened... We finally walk into the adoption center, together.
