Chapter 3
UA's Hero Course curriculum. There are normal core classes, like English in the mornings.
"Now. Which of these four sentences contains a mistake?" Present Mic asked the question.
'So boring,' Ashido, Kaminari, Jiro, and Bakugo thought.
'This really sucks,' Bakugo thought to himself.
"Hey, everybody, look alive!" Present Mic encouraged. "Grammer rules!" Lunch was held in the main cafeteria; run by the Cook Herp: Lunch Rush.
"White rice is the perfect comfort food, isn't it?" Lunch Rush as he stood at a table with Jiro, Yaoyorozu, and Nami.
"It's rockin'," Jiro answered.
Soon it was time for Hero basic training.
"I am here!" All Might announced, throwing the door open. "Coming through the door like a hero!"
"I can't believe it's really All Might!" Kaminari gushed.
"So it's true," Nami said as she sat up more.
"He is a teacher!" Kirishima exclaimed, making a fist. "This year is gonna be totally awesome!"
"Hey, look. Is he wearing his Silver Age costume?" Tsu asked; Nami looked back at Shoto, and he gave a thumbs up.
"I'm getting goosebumps," Ojiro smiled. "It's so retro!"
"Welcome to the most important class at UA High," All Might greeted. "Think of it as Hero-ing 101. Here, you will learn the basics of being a pro. And when it means to fight in the name of good!" He strikes a power pose. "Let's get into it! Today's lesson will pull no punches!"
BATTLE
"FIGHT TRAINING!" Bakugo raged happily.
"Real combat?" Deku asked.
"But one of the keys of being a hero is....looking good!" Shelves started coming out of the wall; with cases that contained their hero costumes. "These were designed for you based on your Quirk registration forms and the requests you sent in before school started." The class gasped happily. "Get yourselves suited up, and then meet me at Training Ground Beta!"
"Yes, sir!" Everyone responded.
****
Back in middle school; Nami was sitting by the fish pond doodling her costume for high school.
"The last day to mail it is today," Shinso said looking over her shoulder.
"I've just been having a hard time with how I want it to look," Nami said as continued to doodle. "The parents keep giving some many critiques."
"Waiting to the last minute isn't a good sign for a future hero," Shinso commented.
"As a middle schooler it's not out of the ordinary," Namid defended herself. He rolled his eyes before taking the pen and paper from her.
****
Nami's hero costume was a dark purple metallic tank top, and skort dress, that stopped right before the knees. It had a Queen Anne neckline; and silver boots that went up to mid-calf. The front had the little dipper star line in a rose gold color. She had admiral blue-sleeved holsters on her arms; designed to carry things. She wore a dark metallic purple mask over her eyes. Soon she walked out of the tunnel with the rest of her classmates.
"They say that clothes make the pros, young ladies and gentlemen, and behold, you are the proof!" exclaimed All Might. "Take this to heart! From now on, you are all heroes in training! This is getting me all revved up! You look so cool! Now. Shall we get started, you buncha newbies?"
"That's your costume?" Nami asked as she examined Shoto. "Sort of lame." He was dressed in all white; with ice on his left side; covering all the parts that made him resemble Endeavor; as well as the boiling kettle scar his mom gave him. Leaving a red glowing eye. Since Nami and Shoto spent more time together; he's managed to open up to her about his past a bit.
Shoto Todoroki was clearly offended. "Have you taken a look at yours?"
"Your costume makes you look more like a villain than a hero," Nami said.
"You look like you got spit out by a black hole!" Shoto shot back.
"Now that you're ready, it's time for combat training," All Might announced.
"Sir?" Iida asked raising his hand; he was covered from head to toe. "This is the fake city from our entrance exam. Does that mean that we'll be conducting urban battles?"
"Not quite," All Might answered as he held up two fingers. "I'm going to move you two steps ahead."
"This class is getting so fast-paced," Nami said.
"Most of the villain fights you see on the news take place outside. However, statically speaking run-ins with the most dastardly evildoers take place indoor," All Might explained. "Think about it. Backroom deals, home invasion, secret underground lairs. Truly intelligent criminals stay hidden in the shadows. With this training exercise, you'll be split into teams of good guys and bad guys and fight three-on-two or two-on-two indoor battles."
"Isn't this a little advanced?" Tsu asked.
"The best training is what you get on the battlefield!" All Might exclaimed. "But remember, you can't just punch a robot this time. You're dealing with actual people now."
"Sir, will you be the one deciding who wins?" Yaoyorzu asked.
"How much can we hurt the other team?" Bakugo asked.
"Do we need to worry about the losers getting expelled like earlier?" Urakaka asked.
"Will you be splitting us up based on chance or comparative skill?" Iida asked.
"Isn't this cape trA's chic?" Aoyama asked; giving them a sparkle.
All Might started to growl. "I wasn't finished talking!" He then pulled out a little booklet. "Liste up. The situation is this. The villains have hidden a nuclear missile somewhere in their hideout. The heroes must try to foil their plans. To do that, the good guys either have to catch the evildoers or recover the weapon. Likewise, the bad guys succeed if they protect their payload or capture the heroes." He held up a slot box. "Time's limited and we'll choose teams by drawing lots!"
"Isn't there a better way?" Iida asked.
"Think about it!" Izuku began. "Pros often have to team up with heroes from other agencies on the spot, so maybe that's the reason we're seeing that here."
"Yes, I see," Iida said. "Life is a random series of events." He bowed. "Excuse my rudeness."
"No sweat!" All Might assured. "Let's draw!"
Team A: Urakaka and Deku
Team B: Shoji and Todoroki
Team C: Mineta and Yaoyorozu
Team D: Bakugo and Iida
Team E: Mina and Aoyama
Team F: Koda and Sato
Team G: Kaminari and Jiro
Team H: Tokoyami and Tsu
Team I: Ojiro and Hagakure
Team J: Sero, Kirishima, and Nami
All Might was now drawing paper from boxes labeled villain and Hero. "I declare that the first fight teams to fight will be these guys!" He held up balls D and A. "Team A will be the heroes, Team D will be the villains. Everyone else can head to the monitoring room to watch!"
"Yes, sir!" Everyone responded. Everyone but the two teams walked away.
"We haven't been probably introduced yet," Sero greeted Nami. "Hanta Sero; I can shoot tape out my elbows."
"Nami Takeda," Nami answered. "I can manipulate and generate stellar energy out of my body." They looked over at the other guy.
"Eijiro Kirishima!" The man greeted as he flexed. "With my hardening quirk; I can take whatever is thrown at our team!" An all-around high-five. Soon they were all in the monitoring room.
"All right!" All Might exclaimed. "Let's begin the indoor training combat training! Team A and Team D your time starts now!" In the monitor room; they had five spots to look at. "Pay attention, kids. Think about what you would do" They watched as Izuku and Urakaka got in through a window. They walked down a hallway; Bakugo appeared around the corner in the air; he had a devilish look in his eye. He immediately tried to plummet the other team with an explosion.
"He almost got the jump on him," Mineta commented.
"Sneak attack, Bakugo?" Kirishima asked. "What kind of man pulls cheap crap like that?" He punched his hand.
"He is supposed to be playing the part of a villain," Nami reminded him.
"It's a viable strategy," All Might added. "Acting like a true villain would."
"It didn't work. Midoriya dodged him!" Ashido pointed out.
"Look, there he goes!" said Kaminari. They watched Izuku grab hold of Bakugo on the right then flipped him over. Bakugo got to his feet; anger seemed to be taking over him; small explosions happening in his hand.
"Hey, who is Bakugo talking to?" Kirishima asked. "I'm not hearing anything."
"Are we able to get sound within the monitor room?" Nami asked.
"He's got a radio in his ear so he can talk to his partner," All Might answered as he pointed to his earpiece. "I gave it to him before that match started. Along with a map of the building. Also, this." He held up some string. "A roll of capture tape! Wrapping this around your opponent means you've apprehended them, and they're out for the rest of the game."
"So, there's a 15-minute time limit, and the good guys have no idea what floor the nuclear weapon is hidden on, right?" Ashido asked.
"Correct!" All Might confirmed.
"Then the heroes are clearly at a disadvantage here," Ashido gathered. "A big one!"
"Real Pros have to outwit villains on a daily basis," All Might explained. "That's life. Even when the odds aren't in our favor, we fight!" Jiro gasped as Kirishima laughed. "All together!"
Everyone raised an arm or two. "Let's raise it for a Plus Ultra!"
"Monsieur," Aoyama said. "He's on the move."
"Hm?" All Might as they all looked at the screen again. Bakugo put one hand in front and one behind. He took off toward Midoriya as Urakaka took her chance to run. Midoriya started to wrap a capture tape around Bakugo's leg; he tried for another big punch, but Midoriya dodged the explosion.
"The little guy's really good!" Sato acknowledged.
"He's holding his own and he hasn't even used his Quirk yet!" Sero added.
"He's someone to study with if you wanna pass," Nami gathered. They watched Izuku run from Bakugo before more fighting could continue. They watched them basically a short game of cat and mouse.
"That guy has some real anger issues," Kaminari said as they watched Bakugo angrily ket out small gremlin explosions. "Kinda scary..." As Bakugo continued to search; Midoriya took a breather behind a wall.
On level 5, Urakaka had finally found the weapon; Iida was in there as well. It didn't take long for him to take notice of her.
Down on the 4th floor, Bakugo found Mirdoriya, and the two got ready to face off. Bakugo got in a stance ready to pull a trigger on one of his gauntlets.
"Young Bakugo!" All Might shouted into the mic. "Don't do it! You'll kill him!" Bakugo did not listen; he sent out a huge explosion that made the whole building shake.
"WOAH!" Everyone gasped.
"Woah!" Kirishima gasped as he looked around. "This's nuts!"
"He's really taken the role of a villain seriously," Nami said.
"Come in!" All Might pleaded. "Come in, Midoriya!" As the smoke cleared; Midoriya was on his back with the right sleeve torn off. Midoriya was in fear as Bakugo continued to approach him.
**
Up on the 5th level, as Iida tried to get Bakugo to respond, Urakaka started to approach the 'weapon'. Iida immediately ran toward her in response, suddenly Urakaka jumped up, flying high above Iida. She started to float down to the weapon; Iida blasted over grabbed hold of the weapon and charged to the other side of the room. Urakaka rolled when she landed; crashing into the wall, and her helmet fell off.
**
Down on the 4th level. Bakugo was still going haywire.
"Sir, isn't this getting out of hand?" Nami asked.
"That Bakugo is acting real crazy," Kirishima added. "He's gonna kill 'im!"
"Not so," All Migth answered. "Bakugo. Use that stored-up power again and I'll stop this fight. Your team will lose! To employ such a strong attack indoors is inviting the destruction of the stronghold you should be protecting. That's a poor strategy, whether you're a hero or a villain. The penalty would be a massive loss of points." Bakugo shook with anger; he then took off using both gauntlets toward Midoriya they started to go hand-to-hand. Bakugo dodged Midoriya; then blasted him from behind; the students gasped.
"What was that move?" Kirishima asked.
"He doesn't come off as a guy with a strategy," Shoto said, Nami glanced back at him. "But he's actually quite intelligent."
"Suprised me too at the entrance exams," Nami said as she looked back at the screen.
"What are you two talking about?" Kirishima asked as he and Ashido looked back at them.
"He changed his trajectory while in midair using a blast that doubled as a smokescreen," Shoto explained. "Very clever."
"Unexpected for a gremlin-like him," Nami stated as she crossed her arms.
"A feint attack like that requires an extreme amount of precision," Yaoyorozu added to Shoto's explanation. "He had to calculate the physics and demonstrate control over his Quirk. "
"Ugh, Bakugo is uber-talented," Kaminari admitted. "I hate it."
They watched Bakugo went to go attack Midoriya again who was smoking from the previous attack; he slammed his gauntlet harshly into his victim. Bakugo grabbed Midoriya's arm; spun around using explosions, and threw the green-haired boy on the ground.
"This is hard to watch!" Ashido trembled a bit. "All he has to do is wrap tape around him, not kill him."
"Bakugo certainly acting like a villain," Tokoyami said.
Kaminari scratched the side of his head. "I thought Midoriya was pretty amazing at the start of the fight, but he's completely outmatched in terms of combat power. Not to mention, Bakugo seems like a natural at all this stuff." They watched Midoriya start to move using all fours.
"He's running away!" Ashido gasped.
"Not very manly, but he doesn't have a choice," said Kirishima." He's outgunned."
"From the looks of he is running away," Nami agreed. "He's most likely creating space to get a chance to strategize."
"It's possible," Kirishima agreed as he titled his head. Midoriya got back to his feet at the window; and turned to face the gremlin. The two took off toward each other after an exchange of words; they both lept at each other ready to throw a punch. Midoriya activated his quirk tearing off his other sleeve as Bakugo let multiple little explosions.
"They're gonna kill each other!" Kirishima exclaimed.
"Sir!" Kirishima and Nami sounded.
"BOTH OF YOU STOP!" All Might shouted into the mic.
On level 5; Urakaka grabbed hold of the wall as down below on level 4 Midoriya released his attack going up. The huge shock wave broke every window going up; creating a giant hole in all the floors. Urakaka used the wall she held on to as a bat for the debris flying into the air. Iida shielded himself from the attack as best as he could as Urakaka leaped over the giant hole in the floor and Iida; then released herself onto the weapon.
Bakugo was shaking in even more anger; both of Midoriya's arms were completely broken; another small exchange of words and the boy fell over unconscious. Everyone in the monitor room was in complete shock at what had happened as time was now up.
"You did it," All Might said softly into the mic. "The hero team...WINS! Your indoor combat training is over." Iida was trying to help Urakaka from throwing up.
"What a weird way for this to tend," Kaminari said. "The losers are practically untouched and the winners are both on the ground."
Tokoyami knelt his head. "How does the old saying go? They may have lost the battle, but they won the war."
"This class is intense," Asui gathered. All Might went down to the battlesight to check on the students; robots were collecting Midoriya. Soon he returned with Bakugo who was in an even more sour mood than usual.
"Well, despite the results the MVP of this exercise is Young Iida!" All Might announced.
"HUH?!" Iida gasped in surprise.
"Shouldn't it be one of the heroes instead, since they're the winners?" Asui asked.
All Might leaned down a little. "Mm! Valid question." He raised a finger. "Why didn't I choose one of those two? Who has a guess?" He raised a hand.
"Sir!" Yaoyorozu chimed as she raised her hand. "I can tell you why!" Everyone glanced at her. "Iida embraced this challenge. He was the only one who truly adapted to his assigned role. I'll explain. Bakugo's judgment was clouded by a personal grudge against Midoriya. As you pointed out earlier, launching a large-scale attack indoors was such a foolish move. It could've been disastrous. Similarly, Midoriya's plan was also poorly thought out, considering the amount of damage that he received. He rendered himself helpless. Not smart. As for Urakaka...she let her guard down mid-battle, and her final attack was far too reckless given the hypothetical stakes. If she'd treated the fake weapon as though it were real, she'd never would've risked using such an imprecise move. Iida was fully prepped for his opponent's arrival. He had a strategy, and never lost sight of his mission to protect the dummy weapon, even if he was foiled in the end." Iida started to blush. "Technically, the hero team won, yes, but they took advantage of the fact that this was training. They didn't respect the spirit of the trial."
"Maybe I should study with her instead of Midoriya," Nami said softly, Shoto glanced down at her.
"Yes...well, you overlooked a few things," All Might said in a questionable tone. "Young Iida could have relaxed a little bit in the exercise, but...otherwise, you nailed it!" He gave a thumbs up.
"One should always start with basics and devote themselves wholeheartedly to learning," Yaoyorozu declared. "That's the only real way to become a top hero."
"Now, then. Time to blow this joint," All Might said as he stood in front of boxes. "Let's move on to the next match. Think about everything we saw and discussed as you tackle this training yourself."
"Yes, sir!" Everyone responded. The slots were drawn.
"Good luck!" Nami wished as she patted Shoto on the back.
"Sure," Shoto responded as he went down with the other others.
"Match Two!" All Might announced. "Team B will be our heroes! And Team I will be the villains!" It was Shoto and Shoji vs Hagakure and Ojiro.
"Look alive, kids!" All Might urged as he had a pen and paper ready. "Show us you're the embodiment of good. Or evil! Let's go!" The buzzer went off; Shoji spread out his dupli-arms. many ears formed at the nubs. Shoto walked in; the ears turned into mouths. They watched Shoji walk out; the moment Shoto touched the wall he froze everything in seconds. Ojiro raised his hands to defend himself as Shoto walked into the room, but Shoto just walked right passed. Everyone was shivering.
"He incapacitated them without compromising the weapon or his teammates," All Might said as he shivered. "Take close note of his technique, students."
"Whoa, he's so strong!" Kirishima shivered.
"So cold," Nami said as she hugged herself.
"The hero team wins!" All Might announced once Shoto touched the weapon. He then used his other side to melt everything.
"Holy crap!" Sato gasped.
"That guy's kind of intimidating," Kaminari said.
"He got in on a recommendation, so he must be good," Asui said.
"He has terrible social skills though," Nami said as she tilted her head.
"Everyone's gotta have a weakness," Sero said as he tilted his head the same way.
"Moving on!" All Might declared. "Time to gather 'round for a review of the second match. After that, we'll jet on over to our next battle!"
"Yes, sir!" Everyone responded.
Up next was Sero, Kirishima, and Nami vs Tokoyami and Asui.
Nami's team was on the villain side; Sero taped many spots; Kirishima hardened as Nami engulfed her fists in stellar energy. In the end, the hero team won.
Then it was Yaoyorozu and Mineta vs Jiro and Kaminari
Sato and Koda vs Aoyama and Ashido
In no time class was over; they all stood at the tunnel to the locker rooms.
"That's a wrap!" All Might announced. "Super work, you really stepped up to the plate. And, we didn't have any major injuries, except for Midoriya. You should be proud. Excellent first day of training, all around!"
"Definitely a difference in approaches between the two teachers," Nami commented; All Might seemed a bit confused.
"It's nice to hear some encouraging words after our homeroom class," Asui explained. "Mr. Aizawa was kind of a buzz kill." Everyone nodded in agreement.
"I'm happy to bring such staggering positivity to my alma mater!" All Might cheered with arms up. "That's all for now, folks." He struck a pose. "I should go and check on Young Midoriya's progress! Now, watch how a pro exits. Like he's got somewhere to be!" He dashed off making the students gasp.
"Okay, guys, this is a hero!" Kaminari cheered.
"Aw, I'll never be able to run that fast," Ojiro complained.
Mineta put a hand over his mouth. "Super awesome!" They all went and returned to class in their school uniform. They continued with their school day; Aizawa gave them his critique of what he watched with their first battle training; Bakugo left as soon the day was over; shortly after he left Izuku showed up to the classroom.
"Hey, it's Midoriya!" Kirishima acknowledged as they looked at the door. "Good to see ya back, super!" He gasped.
"Hey, there!" Nami greeted as she walked up to a few of her other classmates.
"Ha! Man, I don't know what you were saying during that match. But you were all fired up, huh?" Kirishima asked.
Sero held up a finger. "I can't believe you held your own against Bakugo--He's super strong!"
"An intense gremlin," Nami said.
"You did a great job fighting!" Ashido cheered as she pumped her arms.
"You guys really turned up in the first match, so none of us held back in our rounds, either!" said Sato.
Aoyama gleamed as he looked over. "You're far from elegant but I suppose--"
Ashido jumped; cutting him off. "And the dodging was like, whoa!" Midoriya gasped and blushed as his classmates surrounded him.
"Hey, I'm Eijiro Kirishima!" Kirishima said as he pointed himself with his thumb.
"Nami Takeda!" Nami greeted as waved with both hands; she stood behind Kirishima a bit.
Kirishima stood up more looking at Nami and Sero. "We've been going over training results while you were in recovery."
"Hi, I'm Hanto Sero," Sero greeted.
"More importantly, I'm Yuga Ao--"
He got cut off by Ashido again who waved her arms aimlessly. "I'm Mina Ashido! And I just gotta say your dodging was awesome!"
Asui peaked from behind Ashido. "Tsyuy Asui. But please, call me Tsu."
"Hey, Sato," the big greeted as he leaned down a bit.
"Um. Hey, guys," Midoriya greeted in a slight panic.
Mineta jumped high in between everyone and Midoriya. "And my name's Mineta!" Nami stepped back a little bumpy into Sero who was a little behind her; more to the side.
"Where the heck did you pop out of?" Kirishima asked.
"UA's shinest star here---" Aoyama began.
"You may sparkle, but you sucked it up in training," Sato commented.
Nami glanced at Sero. "Sorry."
"Don't worry about it," Sero smiled at her. "You totally saved my butt in the exercise earlier."
In the back, Tokoyami was watching the group. "So noisy."
Iida dashed to the bird man. "TokoyamI! Stop using that desk as a chair! Get off of it this instant!"
"Dude, you need to chill," Jiro advised; she and Ojiro stood at Tokoyami's desk. Iida froze.
"You're carrying a lot of tension," Ojiro pointed out.
Iida lowered his head. "No one understands." He exploded. "I cannot condone actions that disrespect these desks!" He chopped at the air. "Not when great men and women, our upperclassmen, once used them!"
"Also noisy," Tokoyami complained.
The door opened revealing Kaminari and Urakaka; they walked in with a stack of books.
"So, anyway, wanna grab a bite sometime?" Kaminari asked. "Kinda stuff you like?"
"Anything sweet," Urakaka answered; she looked over. "Hey, Deku!" Kaminari groaned as Urakaka ran over to the larger group. "Why didn't she heal your injuries?"
"Oh. Uh..." Izuku began. "Well, it has to do with how much stamina I'm using." He gasped. "Um, Urakaka. Where's Kacchan?"
"We tried to stop him from leaving," Urakaka answered. "But he wouldn't listen. You just missed him." Izuku took off after the explosive classmate. They all watched from the windows as Izuku caught up to Bakugo; then All Might came out grabbing hold of Bakugo; he let go to let Bakugo walk away.
"Huh, I wonder what that was all about," Ashido said.
"The fated battle between rivals," Urakaka declared.
"Whatever Midoriya was saying, it looked like Bakugo really wanted to punch him," Tsu said as she turned to the other girls at the window.
"What is the relationship between those two anyways?" Nami asked.
"Childhood friends turned enemies!" Urakaka answered.
After school ended; Nami skipped out of school to find Hitoshi waiting for her.
"Hitoshi!" Nami greeted happily grabbing his wrist; and dragging him down the stairs with her.
"Nami," Hitoshi grunted as he tried to avoid the eyes of people looking. "You are making a scene."
Nami glanced back at him. "Someone's feeling self-conscious."
"You should feel it more often," Hitoshi said as they began their journey home. "Want to study together?"
"Skatepark?" Nami requested. "Or the park in general?"
"You should take your studies a bit more seriously," Hitoshi advised.
Nami laughed. "I feel like it's important to let yourself breathe in between. It'll give us a chance for our body and brain to increase energy, productivity, and ability to focus."
"All right, all right," Hitoshi gave in. After a quick stop at their homes; the two headed to the skate park; Hitoshi brought his bike and Nami her skateboard.
Nami's mom wasn't the biggest fan of her picking up skateboarding; it started when she was seven. No matter what her mom said; she couldn't stop Nami from doing it due to how carefree her daughter can be at times.
