Chapter 36

At that moment, Lucy came rushing into the workshop, screaming, "Uncle Scott! Sissy!!"
All the adults turned their attention to Lucy. Scott was the first one to run up to her, shouting her name. Rose wasn't far behind, grabbing her little sister into a comforting hug.
"What is it, LuLu?" Rose asked. "What's happened?"
That's when Curtis came rushing up. "I found her locked in a closet."
"Curtis, what's going on?" Bernard asked, getting impatient at the thought of something happening to his family, any of it.
"Bernard! You're back! Thank Christmas! Cuz we've got a real problem!"
"You have to see what Frost did to my mom and dad!" Lucy shouted.
That's when two elves wheeled in a frozen solid Laura and Neil. "Oh my God! Mom! Neil!" Rose yelled. "Where's Frost?! I'm about to give him a piece of my mind!"
Bernard held her, whispering, "It's gonna be ok, Snowflake. Trust me."
Scott was also trying to reassure his daughter as well as Lucy. "Don't worry. We'll get to the bottom of this."
Then two elves entered, dragging Jack Frost between them. They stopped in front of the family. To everyone's surprise and before anyone could react, Bernard let go of his wife, rushed over to Jack, and punched him in the face as hard as he could!
"That's for hitting on my wife!"
    "Ow!" Jack replied.
"Touch her again and you're a dead man." Bernard threatened.
With that, he turned on his heel and returned to his wife's side. Bud whistled. "Remind me never to piss that guy off!"
While he was talking, Rose strolled over to Jack. "Whatever you think Bernard will do to you...I'll do something much worse." She responded. A second later, she bitch slapped Jack, him only managing to stay where he was by the two elves holding him. "I'll make your life a living hell." Rose promised before walking back to her family.
"What is this? Everyone-beat-Jack-up-day?" Jack complained.
Scott walked over to Jack. "Elficers, I have him."
They let go of Jack, leaving him to stare daggers at the big man. "Honestly, can you blame me for wanting something more?"
"I can." Rose said, crossing her arms in defiance.
"Jack, this isn't funny! Change them back!"
"Sorry, Santa. I can't unfreeze them without unfreezing myself and that is something I'll never do!"
The whole Council of Legendary Figures has arrived around the time that Rose bitch slapped Jack. Santa made his way over to Mother Nature. "Mother Nature, can you help me? Thaw him out?"
"I'm sorry, Santa. Our powers don't work on other legendary figures."
"Isn't that a shame!" Jack taunted.
"Give me five minutes with him." Rose threatened. "I'll fix him up!"
Bernard grabbed ahold of his wife. "Calm down, Snowflake. Think about the babies."
"That won't help! I'm in mama bear mode! You're lucky I haven't tried to kill him yet!"
"He's right, princess. Rest. I'll figure something out." Santa said. That's when a thought occurred to him. "Can you do this?" He asked her quietly, sinking to her level.
    "Do you think it'll work?"
    "Question is, do you?"
Lucy nodded. She started walking over to Jack who looked exasperated at the turn of events. "Ok. This is what your all reduced to? Sending a little girl in to save the day, are we?" He taunted. "Whatcha gonna do? Adorable-ize me? Sweet me into submission? Cute me to death? Make me change my way--"
That's when Lucy went for it, grabbing Jack and hugging him, thinking of her family as she did so -- of her mom, her dad, her Uncle Scott, of her sissy, Rose, of Bernard, of her big brother, Charlie, and all the rest.
Jack Frost launched into a rant on the tropics and something in Spanish before realizing what was happening. "What's happening to me?!"
"I'm warming your heart." Lucy said sweetly.
"But they told me it couldn't be done."
"They didn't know about magical hugs."
While this was happening, Jack started changing. The icicles all over him started to melt, then the frost on his suit melted until it turned white. His hair began to unfreeze and soften, changing from an icy blue to a medium brown.
Finally, once the transformation was complete, Jack looked up and smiled. "I think I like it.
With that, the ice trapping Laura and Neil broke into pieces and they were free, shaking and shivering. Neil immediately turned and hugged Charlie.
"Mom! Dad!" Lucy ran into her mom's arms.
"Mom! Neil!" Rose shouted, excitedly running into their arms.
Bernard grinned, following behind his wife. He hugged her and Laura as she hugged both her mom and her stepdad.
    "Group hug!" Neil shouted.
With that, Santa, Carol, the in-laws, the Council of Legendary Figures, including Jack, and all the elves came running up, everyone hugging everyone else as they shared a beautiful family moment. Cuz why not? That's exactly what they were...a family.
                             * * * * *
A few minutes later had everything back to normal...actually maybe better.
Conversations had sparked up all around the workshop as people made their apologies and new announcements.
Rose was sitting at a table, resting when a newly-reformed Jack Frost sat next to her. "Herbal tea?" He asked, sweetly.
Rose gave him a look. "Are you gonna try to freeze my heart again?"
Jack shook his head. "No. Not this time."
"Then I guess I'll accept it." She said, taking a sip.
"Y'know something? I realized something when Lucy melted me. I was obsessed with you. And, it wasn't right. You're a good person...aside from the trying to kick my butt." She laughed. "Look at that! I made you laugh! I don't think I ever did that before!"
Rose shook her head. "You did... when you were yourself. That's all you have to do."
Jack nodded. "Then that's what I'll do! I shall strive to be a better person then. The kinda guy you used to believe in."
"I still believe in you, Jack Frost. I know you can be good. You just need to try."
    "Then I will. Friends?"
"Hmm...I'm still a little mad at you to be honest."
    "Think you'll ever forgive me?"
"I'm sure I will. It may take a few centuries but, hey, we've got all the time in the world."
Jack smiled as he raised his own cup and they toasted to a Merry Christmas and many more to come.
                         * * * * *
The elves had returned to finishing what little work was left at that point when Bernard and Curtis walked around the workshop, chatting.
"So...what was it like being Head Elf, Curtis?"
    "Hard. I honestly didn't do a very good job. I don't think I'm ready."
Bernard placed a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Don't be so hard on yourself, Curtis. Do you honestly think I had it perfect when I first became Head Elf? Trust me, it's a hard job. But maybe, just maybe, we could prepare you."
"But you're the Head Elf, Bernard!"
Bernard looked at his wife who was laughing and joking around with a newly-reformed Jack Frost. "I know. And I intend to be for quite a bit longer but...you see my wife over there?" Curtis glanced over at Rose and nodded. "She's the love of my life. And I hope to raise a very large family with her. I can't do that if I'm always working. So, tell you what, old friend. I'll train you to be the next Head Elf. I'll keep the job for a few more years then when I feel I'm ready to move on and pass the torch on to you, then that's what we'll do."
"You really think I'm good enough?"
"Think? No I don't think. I know, Curtis."
                             * * * * *
Santa and his wife were resting, watching the scene before them. "Ain't it great? Everything's finally how it should be!"
The in-laws were chatting with Laura and Neil. Lucy was taking a piggy back ride on Charlie. Rose was drinking tea with a newly-reformed Jack Frost. Bernard and Curtis were chatting like the best of old friends. The Council of Legendary Figures were helping elves load packages into the sleigh. Everything was picture perfect. He couldn't imagine being any happier than he already was.
That's when Carol told him something. "Ooh...Scott. It's time."
Santa checked his watch. "No. About ten o'clock."
"No, Scott. It's time to deliver the package."
    "Midnight as usual."
"No, Scott. It's time to deliver the package." She stated more firmly.
That's when he finally realized and shouted:
IT'S TIME TO DELIVER THE PACKAGE!!!!!
