"Leo," I burst into the man's cozy office despite Bronc's calls of warning for me to wait, "we need to talk."
"You're back?" Leo looked shocked to see me as he shuffled his paperwork. He was sitting at his desk, pencil in hand. His tousled blonde hair fell into his tired-looking eyes.
"Sorry for barging in... it's important," I stammered as I moved up to his desk. Concern filled his eyes and he stood up.
"I didn't expect to see you back around here," he crossed his arms, "Usually people don't return after running off with Cameltoe."
Ignoring his snide remark, I plopped down in the chair in front of his desk. My aching bones seeping into the hay-stuffed cushion. Even sitting down I still felt the tension in my shoulders. My mind was running a mile a minute as I blurted out the reason for my intrusion.
"I'm the light-bearer."
Something flickered in Leo's eyes as he stared at me. Then he chucked and his face broke out with a grin, "Nice try, kid. I've got some stuff to take care of if you don't mind."
I shot a glare in his direction as he laughed at me, "I'm not a kid. You can't be much older than I am."
Leo stopped laughing and shook his head, "Sorry. I've just had too much false hope lately." He chuckled again, only this time it was more bitter.
"But i'm not joking." I said this time with more confidence, "I'm not really sure what it means, but I'm the light-bearer. Jean made sure I made it here to tell you. That's why I came back."
Leo had gone still, eyeing me carefully. He looked almost frightened with a dash of hopefulness.
"Jean sent you? How would she know if you're the light-bearer or not?" He moved in front of me, propping himself up on his desk. His voice was skeptical as he questioned me. His fingers twitched possibly with anticipation as I bit my lip, considering the question.
"She said that there was a prophecy and well I can-... I'll show you," Closing my eyes I slowed my breathing down. I could feel the blood flowing through my veins. Each individual cell was working in unison as energy radiated from my being. I tried to force the energy in my body out through my skin.
"What are you doing?" Leo asked. When I opened my eyes, I wasn't glowing, and Leo was giving me a strange look.
"I'm supposed to be glowing." I flipped my hands over to examine their normalcy. My tanned skin was like a glaring sore. My brow furrowed as I tried to piece everything together. It had been effortless before. Before, I hadn't even had to think about it.
"This is ridiculous," the defeat in his voice was evident, but it only fueled my anger.
"I'm not lying," I said, a little perturbed by his dismissive nature.
Leo raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms once again. He was testing me. He had indirectly called me a liar. Leo continued to shake his head and move away from the desk. He examined some items on a shelf against the far wall.
Without turning he said, "Do you have any more stories to tell? Or did you come back just to waste my time?" My blood was really pumping now as he mocked me. I stood up from my chair and gritted my teeth. He might think I was crazy, but I know what I've seen. Jean trusted me to get here. She wanted me to leave before Cameron noticed and if I didn't get Leo's help I would have nowhere else to turn. I couldn't go back to the castle. Not after everything that happened and what I had heard about Cameron and Chloe.
The thought of Chloe made my chest ache. She had been so kind and gentle and he had killed her. And Leo had the audacity to mock me as I tried to-
"Holy shit!" Leo was facing me once again and jumped towards the wall. I glared at him as he shrunk away from me.
What's his deal? Did he forget I was here? Am I that intimidating?
Realization hit me and I looked down at my feet. My skin was glowing vibrant yellow again. I had done it. But how?
"You're glowing," he hissed. All I could do was smile as I watched my skin flickered. I could see the blood flowing through my veins as I touched my arm. Looking back to Leo, I glared at him again.
"I told you I could glow," I stuck out my tongue like a child. Leo was still staring at me, flabbergasted. He slowly stepped towards me and hesitantly reached his hand out as if to touch me. His hand hovered over my shoulder. Gently, he lowered his hand until it made contact with my shirt and the glowing ring that radiated from me.
Tears streamed down Leo's face and I heard a voice. I watched Leo's mouth, but it wasn't moving. I whipped around, but there was nobody else in the room. The voice spoke again and I realized it was Leo. He was in my head.
We're saved.
I heard Leo's voice repeating that phrase over and over. His tear continued to fall as he stared at my shoulder where he made contact. The prolonged silence and touch were starting to make me feel uncomfortable. I stepped away from Leo and his hand fell. Confusion swam through his eyes. Wiping at his face with his sleeve he turned to me for answers.
"What did you do to me?" He questioned, staring at my still-glowing body. The light had faded significantly but was still letting off an eerie radiance. I shrugged, not really sure myself. He had seemed entranced by the light after placing his hand down. Shaking his head, he lifted his eyes and they made contact with mine, "It's really you. It must be you. The light-bearer. You've come to set us free."
