Chapter 17
Tamao was awoken by an excited Sakura. It was barely even sunrise yet. "Wanna evolve?" She asked, grinning.
Tamao stood up and nodded. Perhaps evolution would drive off his thoughts. "Oh, also, I made you this!" Sakura added, handing Tamao a black and yellow bracelet. A moonstone, amongst other stones, were added as well. "Alrighty, lets go!" Sakura giggled, running off. "H- hey, wait!" Tamao shouted after her, yet he quickly caught up, now wearing the bracelet.
After a moment of walking, something caught Tamao's mind. "Hey, why do you wanna evolve all of the sudden?" He asked. "Oh, just a little voice in my head, y'know?" Sakura hummed, excitedly leading Tamao.
Tamao nodded, following Sakura still. "How long will it be before we get there?" He asked. Sakura shrugged. "Not long, I promise!" Sakura grinned. Tamao nodded, and continued following Sakura, somewhat happy about this evolution plan.
A peaceful silence surrounded the two siblings. Perhaps this was a rather good plan, after all!
He couldn't help but imagine being distracted from the guilt he felt about killing Star'Gazer. Tamao eventually heard the ocean waves crashing against a nearby beach, and Sakura eventually slowed to a halt. "Here we are!" She exclaimed, sitting down. "You first!" Sakura grinned.
Tamao nodded and closed his eyes. He tried to evolve, but he wasn't sure how. He felt a surge of energy pulse through him, it almost burned. The moon cast down on his brown pelt and his small body, and his fur started turning black, and yellow. His small size became larger, and larger. His eyes changed from blue, to red and blue, and suddenly, he felt powerful in the moon's light.
"I- I did it?" Tamao seemed confused, looking at his paws. It seemed as though his evolution was successful! "I'm- I'm an umbreon!" Tamao grinned, excitedly. Sakura gushed with awe as the sun started to rise. "Okay, okay, my turn!" She grinned.
Tamao watched excitedly, his extra-large frame casting a long shadow as the sun rose.
Sakura's body started to glow white, her brown fur shifting to purple, and her own blue eyes shifting to purple as well. Her tail grew a split, and her mane slowly vanished. Barking sounded off in the distance as Sakura continued evolving, but that barking quickly changed into a flurry of excited yips, and screams of pain, and terror.
Houndoom were attacking Sakura, and Tamao immediately started attacking them, but he was pulled off, and dragged away. "Let. Go!" He demanded. He was thrown, but not easily. He came face to face with someone he thought died.
Star'Gazer.
Sakura's body kept getting whipped around and thrown as Tamao attacked Star'Gazer. The two umbreon fighting the best they could, but in the end, Tamao won, and Sakura lost.
Sakura was now dead, alongside Star'Gazer. It was easy to tell, as Sakura's body kept glowing, long after the houndoom left, and long after the evolution should've finished. Tamao walked over to her corpse and laid down. He let out a wail of pain, tears flooded his eyes.
Why did life have to be so cruel!? His sister just wanted to evolve, and have a good, fun life, and so did he, but why did Sakura have to die!? Why, why, why!?
Tamao buried his snout into Sakura's cooling body, tears falling from his eyes as he started to sob.
He has been through so much. Losing his first 'sister', then losing his 'friend', then his actual sister, and his 'friend' again! Why did life have to be so painful, so harsh, so cruel!?
Tamao choked on his own tears as the sun continued to rise, casting warm light onto Tamao's body.
He carefully prodded at Sakura's body in hopes something would happen, but in the end, Sakura's body remained stiff. "She's dead- it's my fault, isn't it? If I had listened to her and never stayed with Star'Gazer, she wouldn't be dead. I'm sorry, Sakura. I'm sorry I failed you, I'm sorry I didn't listen, I'm sorry I failed to keep the promise!" Tamao cried out.
His tail wrapped around his body, as he sat there, apologizing to the lifeless corpse of his only sister. His only friend, the only one he could trust. After what felt like ages, Tamao finally got up. The fur on his face was matted with his tears as he picked up Sakura's body and took it somewhere safe. He dug a hole near a Sakura blossom and buried her body. He knew she'd never come back, and it hurt.
It hurt oh so much.
"It's alright to grieve," A voice spoke. It felt draining to be near. Tamao looked up and stared at the Pokémon. It was a hisuan zoroark. "Shut up, you're not the one who just lost their sister!" He snapped as his fur bristled. "I know what it's like to have lost. I'll leave you be for now, but I must do my duty." The zoroark calmly responded.
Tamao growled, yet let the zoroark do whatever, as he walked away. He didn't have time for this anymore. He wanted to find somewhere to stay and have somewhere to cry in peace. Somewhere to grieve over the permanent loss of his sister.
His heart ached as he wanted to be around her again. He wanted to see his sister evolve, and grow to be an amazing Pokémon, not see her dead in the ground!
Tamao walked over to the human town, the bracelet his sister made staying on his wrist.
He found a small, quiet alley, and laid down. He didn't care anymore, if someone took him away, then so be it. If he died, then so be it. He didn't care.
But then a thought struck him. What would Sakura want? Would she want him dead? No, she wouldn't. Would she want him sad? No, she wouldn't. Would she want him to be captured? No, she wouldn't.
Tamao got up, and decided to keep pushing himself forwards with the future. He left the alley and headed back into the main part of the human town, and immediately looked for a better place to stay, eventually leaving, and heading back to the forest.
