Chapter 29
"Can you believe we're graduating in three months?" I realized grabbing an Oreo out of my lunch box and savoring it carefully in my mouth, letting it melt slowly on my tongue.
"I know, its crazy." Brianna replied starring at the clouds above us that were quickly gliding across the blue sky.
Today we decided to eat lunch outside with some other people in our grade. I loved to lay in the grass while eating lunch. The tranquility made everything ten times better. It reminded me of when I would always go on a picnic with Madi and my parents every other Saturday when I was younger. We would drive up to the nearest park and Madi and I would race to the playground and make a bet on who would make it to the swings first.
February in North Carolina was amazing; it was not too cold or too warm, but it was just right. I could stay outside all day long if I could.
I lay there with my arms behind my neck staring at the clouds zooming overhead in different shapes and sizes.
"Hey Bri and Linnea." Mackenzie exclaimed, leaping over a log and sitting next to me.
She was a sophomore and worked for the high school's newspaper,"SWH News." Her older sister, Skylar, is in our grade and she is one of the kindest people I know. "Can I ask you about you and Ethan?" She asked with a happy smile on her face as she looked down at me.
I gave her look that told her directly that I did not want to talk about Ethan right now. Apparently she did not get the memo and kept smiling and looking at me, waiting for an answer.
"Uh, you do know what happened, Mackenzie, right?" Brianna muttered, finally breaking the awkward silence between us and looking carefully at Mackenzie.
" No. . ." Mackenzie replied looking confused and embarrassed at the same time about asking the question.
"Well, they-they aren't together anymore." Brianna stuttered as she looked in my direction.
"Oh. I'm so sorry, Linnea. I-I didn't know." Mckenzie apologized sympathetically as she began to step away from us slowly.
I glanced at Brianna and then Mackenzie and looked towards the football field where the boys were play football during break.
" You know, I'll go find someone else to interview for this weeks, "Cutest Couple" feature on the newspaper." Mckenzie shouted from the other side of the hill as she began to run off in the distance.
Brianna and I shrugged and then began talking again. Then I had the sudden urge to look back and I wish I had not. I caught a glimpse of Mackenzie interviewing Ethan and Becca, which made me extremely frustrated.
"Are you even listening to me Linnea?" Brianna questioned tapping my shoulder as she followed my gaze.
Eventually, she noticed that I was looking behind her at Ethan and Becca, who were about to get interviewed by Mackenzie.
"Oh uh, yeah." I lied as I quickly changed my glance to Brianna who smiled and then began a lecture on boys.
