Distance.
They said that distance made the heart grow fonder. That's what they said. But they were wrong.
Irene sat in a cafe. Alone. She sighed. He had forgotten again, or he was too busy to squeeze her into his schedule; that had been the case for the past year.
She remembered vividly the first meeting they had together. They were on business in Vietnam, showing that relations between South Korea and Vietnam were good, bonding over a much loved passion. Music. And that's how their story started. That beautiful night was something that Irene would never let herself forget. How handsome he looked in a red suit and black shirt contrasting with her pure white dress. They balanced each other out. And that had been the foundation of their relationship. She smiled to herself as she remembered the way he protected her that night saving her from feeling uncomfortable and making sure that her honour was protected. The rest was history. She fell for him. Hard. When he looked at her it was as if every ounce of breath was taken from her lungs floating into the air like midnight smoke. Every time he kissed her it felt like the world stopped, leaving just the two of them to wander the earth relentlessly together. Every time he held her face between his hands it felt like he was breaking every single barrier. Holding her for eternity in the arms She had grown so accustomed to. That is what falling in love was like, a story you never wanted to end. They spent months dancing around each other, flirting and forming a deep connection that was unlike no other. He completed her in ways she didn't even know she needed. He was her best friend and lover; a two in one package deal.
But she could feel the distance. It had been two years since they had gotten together. Their two year anniversary was yesterday. She had planned a party with her girls and his boys, she wanted to spend time with the people that they both loved and cherished. It had struck midnight and he hadn't turned up, she felt the pity that was directed her way despite not looking at any of them. She heard Mark desperately try to ring him, leaving voicemail after voicemail but receiving nothing but a robotic response every time. She heard the boys whisper shout at each other as they witnessed Irene's heart get broken and humiliated. The girls trying their hardest to get through to her. Instead everything they said went over head.

He still hadn't come. And abruptly she stood, causing them all to look at her as she took of the banner ripping it in half, and chucking the two presents and card she had for him in the bin. She stood in front of the door hand on the handle as she said "I'm going home. Don't contact me for a bit... I just need some space. I'll be fine. Don't worry." And with those final words, she left.
She sat in her car, starting the engine... her playlist booming with a song she had written and produced about him. Her eyes misted over with unshed tears as she bit her lip in hopes to contain the sob she desperately wanted to emit. Her hands gripped the steering wheel until they turned white. Her eyes forcing themselves to remain glued to the road. Her phone kept going off, she heard it but chose to ignore it, the ringtone signalling that it was him trying to get through to her. She laughed bitterly as she slammed onto her breaks, grabbing the phone, she looked at the ID My love and a picture of her and Jackson burning from the screen. She turned the phone off aggressively shoving it into her bag. She took a deep breath trying but failing to steady her breathing. She wanted to believe that it wasn't his fault, he loved working and she knew that, she knew where his priorities lay but she had foolishly believed she was one. And it hurt. It hurt to be let down time and time again to the point where she had to look at his Instagram in order to know what was happening in his life. Whenever they called which was hardly ever due to his schedule, he lasted about 5 minutes with a brief conversation before falling asleep on her or cutting the phone completely. She laughed at herself. It took her half an hour to get home and she launched herself straight to her mattress in less than 0.1 seconds, hauling her bag into the corner. She got up a few hours later, her restlessness apparent from her features as she brushed her hand through her hair. She looked at herself in the mirror horrified at the sight that greeted her. She looked around for her phone, turning it on, only for it to blow up. She saw messages from him and yet he still remained oblivious as to what he had done. He must have not heard any of the voicemails. She sighed looking at herself in the mirror.
'Meet me at our usual spot at 11'
She left it abrupt. Chucking it to one side she got herself ready, in a hoodie she forgot was his... it hadn't hit her until her nostrils filled with his scent, it was fading however. Just like them.
And here she was two hours after she had told him to meet her, waiting for him. She saw the look on people's faces as they sat silently judging her, the pity apparent. She checked her messages between them only to be greeted with a Seen. She sighed. 'Jackson where are you?' Her phone chimed In response:
Jackson said he was busy. He can't come and see you. But he said he will be at our house later if u want to come. Sorry.
- Jinyoung
Her heart broke. She sighed paying for the untouched coffee before leaving.
She disappeared for three hours. Her phone switched off. She looked down at the ring on her finger. It was a promise ring. A promise ring he gave to her when he promised to be the one constant thing in her life, to be their through thick and thin. A lie. Her mind chided. He broke his promise and that is all she knew at this point.
She reached the boys apartment half an hour later, Joy, Yeri, Suelgi and Wendy all present too. And she saw him. Her eyes accusingly staring him down. "Irene-" he started. Her gaze turned to the side. "Let's hear it then Jackson, what excuse are you planning on using this time?" "Irene-" "No no no, let me guess. 'Oh Irene I'm sorry, I should have told you that I was busy and that I didn't have time. I'll make it up to you.' Are you planning to use that one?" Her eyes piercing his, "Or is it gonna be 'your no longer a priority in my life Irene' well ?" She said, her voice cracking as her eyes pulled away from his. "Two years Jackson, it was out two year anniversary and you didn't come. I begged you weeks ago to make sure you were free for that day, in fact no I said evening because I know how important work is for you and you told me you weren't able to and I compromised again saying come home for 10 and you agreed, and what was I greeted with... a no show." She shook her head. "I waited for you the entire day, it was our day... and I was supposed to at least have two hours of that but you couldn't even give that to me." She choked on her own sob, as her teary vision met his. "Irene-" "No Jackson... do you know how embarrassing it is to have stand there and watch our friends try and contact you, their hushed whispering...I'm not angry with the anniversary... I am pissed that you keep leaving me... that you disappear, that you can't speak to me, hell Jackson I have to check your Instagram to try and work out what the fuck is going on In your life." She looked at her friends who were like family to her in the background. She saw the pain in their eyes for her. She moved around going towards the bin taking out the gifts she had brought for him, hurling them to the floor, her breathing becoming laboured as he crouched down opening the wrapping, he saw a bracelet that was like a steel bangle, thick just the way he liked them, he remembered pointing out to her that he liked that and would buy it but he didn't have enough time. She went back and got it for him, inscribing their names on it. He looked up at her, as her gaze remained unwavering past him. He cast his gaze down opening the second gift. A homemade album, he knew she had made this, he could tell by her handwriting, the way in which their pictures had decorated each page, a little message under each picture for him. His own tears fell, as he met Irene's gaze, she turned to the side biting her lip. She moved around him picking up the bin as she stood in front of him. He rose, standing, his head hanging in shame. "Put it back in the bin." He looked at her, the devoid look that he tried to get rid of was back staring at him. " you've already insulted my love Jackson. Go on put it in the bin." The girls behind them felt tears slip from their eyes, as the boys looked down at the floor. Jackson remained unmoving, she placed the bin on the floor in front of them. "Irene please.....please....." she looked back up at him "Babygirl I'm sorry...I'm so so sorry." She stared back at him unfazed, his hand moving to rest on her cheek only for her to move her face out of his reach as if his touch would burn her. "Put it in the bin." She repeated. Within a second she began wrestling his for the album, ripping one page in the process, and slamming it into the bin, as he tried desperately to stop her. She grabbed his wrist, taking the bracelet he had put on himself throwing it into the bin. His tears spilling out his eyes. "Irene-" she held her hand up signalling him to stop. She looked at her hand. His eyes following her trail. "Do you remember when you gave this promise ring to me?... you promised to love me till the day you died. You promised to be a constant in my life. You promised that you would be there through thick and thin. And you weren't. You lied. You lied Jackson." He shook his head in denial. As her fingers went to her hand, grabbing the ring, "Babygirl...please."
She ripped the ring off, throwing it at his chest, his hand catching it before it fell into the bin.
Her eyes allowing floods of tears to escape as she looked at him "Goodbye Jackson." He moved to stop her but she had gone.
He collapsed to the floor, his head in his hands as his tears became uncontrollable.
He lost her.
