chapter four

They finally made it to the drug store, where the boys left Richie and Alice with Ben so they could go get some supplies to help Ben. It took them forever, seeing as they realized they hadn't had enough money and needed to find a way to get the supplies out of the store without Mr. Keene noticing them.

Mr. Keene is Greta Keene's father. Alice found him a little creepy, considering it was very easy to sweet talk him and distract him.

"So you and Bill huh?" Richie asked Alice, coming up with the conversation while the others were gone.

"What are you talking about?" Alice asked, looking up at him. Her green eyes were still very dull, but you could see just the tiniest spark when Bill's name was brought up.

Her cheeks were red, from it being hot outside. Luckily her pony tail was still up and looked perfect, and her knee was red around the area it'd been cut.

"Oh come on, I saw you guys holding hands in the sewers. The way you look at him, all googley eyed." Richie taunted the girl, and she just made a face.

"We held hands for no more than a moment, Richie, I don't look at anyone in any certain way." She argued, and they both got quiet as the rest of them showed up, Standing next to Bill was Beverly Marsh.

Alice didn't say anything, didn't even smile the way that she normally would. Stan furrowed his eyebrows, looking between Bill and Beverly, before looking over to see Alice.

Her eyes were even duller than before, a dark green. They were normally a light, shiny green that shined, but they looked so much different. He knew something was up and sighed lightly, walking over to sit next to her.

As Bill thanked Beverly for helping, and Eddie and Richie argued while Eddie helped fix Ben up, Stan looked over at Alice. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," She said, although it was obvious that something was definitely wrong with her.

"Come on, Alice. We haven't known each other for very long, but I can see right through you. Is it Bill and Beverly?" He asked, noticing her face soften as he asked.

"Kind of." She admitted, feeling her face heat up. "I mean, Richie thinks we like each other. I kind of like him- have for a while now. I mean not like like, because I haven't talked to him very much but I find him very cute and I just- I don't know." She stopped, grabbing a pebble and throwing it.

"Yanno, he likes you too. They're just standing next to each other, there's nothing going on between them," Stan said.

"I know she's just- she's really pretty is all." Alice said, not noticing the look on Stanley's face when she said that.

"But so are you! I mean look at you A, lots of people like you at the school." Stanley gave her a nickname, frowning lightly.

"I guess so." She said, not wanting to talk about it anymore.

Bill looked over at the two secretly in conversation, telling himself repeatedly that he was going to ask Stan later what the two were talking about. He stepped a couple steps away from Beverly, hoping Alice didn't think anything was going on between them.

"You should hangout with us tomorrow." Eddie told the girl, after he finished cleaning Ben up. "We're planning on going to the quarry, and inviting Alice to go with us too, so you wouldn't be the only girl." He added, wiping his hands off on his shorts.

Bill found his way over to Stan and Alice, holding a hand out. "W-we're leaving soon. Want help u-up?" He offered Alice. She sent him a small smile, taking his hand and letting him help pull her up.

They didn't let go of each other, however, and watched as Beverly looked over at Alice then back at Eddie, contemplating on whether she should hangout or not.

"I'll think about it, if I do decide to come. What time shall I be there?" She asked, smiling more at Alice than any of the others.

"We're g-going around t-two, to two th-thirty." Bill said, looking to his side at Alice, who was studying the taller girl.

"Nice. Okay, see you there Alice!" Beverly waved, and walked off, Ben watching in awe as she left.

Alice looked down, noticing hers and Bill's hands were still together. She awkwardly let go, looking down at her feet.

"It's getting close to curfew, Ben would you like me to give you a lift home?" Stan stood up, offering the injured boy a ride.

"Sure, that'd- that'd be great, thanks." Ben said, as he slowly stood up, making sure he didn't hurt himself even more.

Alice walked over to her bike which was leaned against the wall, throwing one leg over the other side. She sighed lightly, shutting her eyes for a second to think about things. They'd already pretty much invited her to hangout with them tomorrow, at the quarry. She wanted to go because she desperately wanted to see Bill, but then again she didn't because of what's been going on with this weird clown.

When she opened her eyes back up, Bill had thrown himself on his bike and made his way over to Alice, sitting on his bike next to her.

"Are y-you alright?" He asked her.

"Fine, don't worry about me Bill. We better go ahead and get home. My house is a bit of a bike ride and I definitely don't want to stay out past curfew after what's happened today." Alice smiled reassuringly at Bill, who gripped onto his handles tightly.

"At least l-let me ride w-with you t-till you get home." Bill said, putting one foot on a pedal.

"You don't need to do that, Bill." Alice smiled at him.

"I want to," He said.

"Alright, might as well start heading now then." She said, before turning her body to face who was still there.

Stan was letting Ben on the back of his bike, while Eddie and Richie were getting on their bikes. "Goodbye you guys, see you tomorrow?" She said, smiling that famous smile of hers. Although it wasn't real the way that the other smiles were, she still wanted to be positive.

Besides, she hasn't seen the clown, or heard anything since they were in the sewers and at the barrens, so she should be fine, right?

"Hopefully! Get to see more of you than I do right now." Richie winked, and Alice playfully scoffed. She should've seen that one coming, he hadn't made a snarky comment or joke in a while. The last time he even came close to a comment like that was when he told Ben 'I'm glad I met you before you died' and depending on how you took it, it wasn't even a snarky comment.

Alice put one of her feet on one of the pedals, pushing it forward. As she started pedaling out of the alley way that they were in, Bill followed, making sure to keep up at her pace.

They'd lived about three blocks away from each other, so either way even if Bill wasn't biking her home, she'd still end up riding with him most of the way either way.

The ride was quiet at first, both of them wanting to say something- just not knowing what to say.

"Thank you for letting me hangout with you guys, it was really fun." Alice finally said.

"It's n-no problem. I mean th-thank you f-for hanging out with u-us. We're k-kind of losers." Bill said, and Alice couldn't help but giggle.

"W-what?" Bill asked, them taking a turn onto a street.

"I just think it's cute you call yourself losers. Just because Henry Bowers and other people think you're losers, doesn't mean you are. I think you guys are pretty cool. Even with your cute little stutter, Eddie's germaphobic moments, Stan's noodle looking hair and Richie's smart remarks," She said, Bill blushing as she called his stutter cute.

"I don't think you guys are losers. If you are, then I want to be a loser too." She added.

Bill didn't say anything, just smiled a fairly big smile. It was one of the biggest smiles he's made ever since Georgie disappeared. Alice made him feel happier than normal, as if she was the only thing to keep him sane after everything's that's happened in Derry.

After a while of biking, the pair finally stopped in front of Alice's house. She hopped off of her bike, holding onto the handle bars.

"Thank you for biking me home Bill. I enjoyed today, and absolutely cannot wait to hangout with you tomorrow. Two, right?" She asked, making sure she'd remember what time to meet the boys at the quarry.

"Y-yes." Bill said, resting both feet on the street below him. He was sitting on his seat still, while Alice had moved her bike up to the sidewalk and was standing. They were almost the same height that way, Bill being only an inch or so taller than her still.

"Alright. See you, Bill." She said, turning to turn her bike toward the sidewalk to her house. Bill wanted to wait for her to get inside, so he leaned back slightly, watching her figure open the gate and push her bike in.

Not even halfway up her sidewalk Alice stopped, dropping her bike and running back to Bill. "What is it?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows.

"Do you, do you want to hangout maybe before we go to the quarry? I can bring my watch and we can watch the time so we know when to meet up with them, I just think it'd be fun if we-"

"S-sure." Bill cut the nervous girl off. "I'd like that. I'll be here t-tomorrow at n-noon." She just smiled, reaching toward him and giving him a small hug. It took him off guard, and before he even had the chance to give her a hug back, she'd pulled away from him and skipped her way up into the gate and locked it behind her.

Alice bent over, picking up her bike with the biggest smile on her face. She put her bike on the side of the house like her parents always wanted her to, and looked over to see Bill watching her every movement. She didn't find it creepy or weird, she knew he just wanted to see her get inside safe.

She sent a light wave before going into her house, shutting the door behind her. Leaning against it lightly, she sent out the quietest squeal before seeing her mother in the living room, knitting.

"Whatcha knitting?" She asked happily, her mother giving her a weird look.

"A small blanket. I think it would just look dashing in your room, do you like it?" Her mother asked her, standing up to hold up the entire blanket.

Alice looked at it, smiling. "I love it mom!" She said. "Thank you." Her mom nodded at her as a way of saying you're welcome, and Alice skipped her way upstairs to her room.

She got into her bedroom, immediately going through all of her clothes to find the perfect outfit for the next day. She was excited to hangout with Stan, Richie, Beverly and Eddie too, but she was way more than excited to hangout with Bill before they all got together.

Something about the tall, awkward boy just made her heart happy. He made her forget about the clown, about anything sad that's happened. About how she originally had no friends, and although she doesn't know exactly if they'd consider her their friend, she's more than glad they're hanging out and talking.

After getting her outfit for the next day set out, eating dinner and taking a shower and brushing her teeth Alice got into bed that night, feeling the happiest she's felt in a long time.
