Chapter 5
Torgna's P.O.V.
"I really don't want to fight you," Grubnut whispered urgently as we locked hands.
"I know. I don't want to fight you either," I tell her, "But my chief has a history with Berk and I have to remain loyal. I'm sorry." I really was. She didn't do anything to Chief Hiccup but she was being forced to fight someone as skilled as me, no bragging intended.
"I'm sorry too," she breathes before we break the hand shake and back away from each other a few paces.
She nods that she's ready and I return it before we slowly start circling each other, sizing each other up. I make the first move and lunge forward before throwing a punch to her abdomen. She has her forearm shoot up to redirect my fist but it backfires on her when I thrust my fist into her nose. Blood splashes onto my knuckles as she grunts in pain. She tries to kick my legs out but I jump over her leg and kick her away from me, my foot hitting her gut hard enough to chase the air from her lungs. She flies across the arena before her back collides with the wall, filling the air with a sickening crack.
"Get back in there!" Stoick screams at her as she falls to her knees.
She had a scowl on her face as she caught her breath before running back into the ring. She goes to kick my face but I grab her ankle and throw it in a different direction, causing her to do a recovery flip before trying to jab my stomach. I grasp her wrist and spin around before flipping her over my shoulder. I let her shoot to her feet before trying to punch her knee. She moves like lightning and turns her leg so my fist has no affect before bringing her knee up to break my nose. I absorb the blow with my cheek before kicking her legs out from under her. She falls on her back and I straddle her abdomen before pinning her to the ground. I would have gone on longer, to make her feel like she wasn't a total failure, but I had to end this. Her nose was spilling blood and she had a black eye. Plus, I don't think that wall she took to her back did her any favors.
"Enough!" Chief Hiccup shouts. I get off Grubnut and extend my hand to help her up. She takes it and I pull her to her feet before we shake hands and face our chiefs who were staring at us in pride and scorn.
"You fight well," she says and I nod in acknowledgment.
"You were a worthy opponent," I tell her and she looks at me with a fallen expression before walking to a blonde haired man and a brown haired woman. I guess they were her parents. I look to where Avechi was and run over as I see that she's sitting up. "Hey, how's your head? Their healer said it could be something more serious than a concussion," I say, sitting next to her.
"It is, but she says that we caught it early enough for it to be easily cured," she tells me.
"It's lucky she has a heart," Shayla says as she gives Avechi a mug. "She said you should drink this."
"What if it affects someone else?" Avechi asks as she downs the last of the medicine.
"They said it's very rare, so we don't have to really worry about it. But just in case, she's going to teach me how to treat it," Shayla says.
"How did she know I had it?" Avechi asks.
"She said it mimics the symptoms of a concussion. She thought we might not know about the plague so she decided to just be sure," Shayla explains.
"Chi!" a voice screams happily and we look in it's direction to see Tawny running toward us. I scoop her into my lap as she gets closer.
"Hey, Tawny!" I greeted her and she laughed with a clap of her hands.
"Hey, Tawny, where's Dada?" Avechi asks.
"Dada over 'dare," she says, pointing across the ring to where the chief was obviously trying to keep calm as Stoick criticized him. When Stoick finally went to his tribe-mates, Chief Hiccup took a deep breath before slowly walking toward Heather. They exchanged words before he went to Toothless and mounted him. I looked at Avechi and saw her staring after her father in sadness and anger.
"He isn't even his son anymore and he still feels the need to put him down," she growls, glaring at Stoick as I let Tawny run off.
Stoick's P.O.V.
I was in the middle of talking to Spitelout and Astrid about how we needed to get this 'tribe' in order before Spitelout pointed to something behind me. I turned around to see the young girl the chief always had tailing after him. She was looking at me with wide eyes and furrowed eyebrows as she tilted her head in thought.
"You look like Dada," she says, pointing at me.
"W-Well you look like my son," I tell her, seeing her auburn hair and similar facial features.
She looked around. "Where is he?"
"Killed by a dragon," I say and a look of horror strikes across her face.
"Header!" she whines before running to the black haired woman.
"She does kind of look like Hiccup," Spitelout says thoughtfully.
"These students are too familiar with fighting without weapons," I murmur, recalling the fight, "We need to teach them the right way to battle."
"How do you suggest we do that?" Astrid asks.
"We take one," I say.
"What?" Spitelout sounded shocked.
"We'd be doing them a favor," I explain, "We take one of theirs, teach them the true ways of a Viking, bring them back when they're grown, and then they will finally see the light and change their habits. It can also be a type of payback for Gothi treating that broad."
