Dancing with the Devil
A/N: All I'm gonna say is that this probably isn't very good, but I've had this idea for a while and wanted to get it out of my system. Thank you to YouTube Playlists for giving me half of my ideas for stories. Here's the link for the one that inspired this one. This is inspired by one on Lolita Judith's channel. Enjoy!
Cameras flashed as the door to the black SUV you were in was opened by your chuffer. You stuck one high heel out and took his hand as you rose out of the vehicle gracefully and shielded your eyes from all the flashes and shouting journalists. You gathered some of your long dress in your hands as you made your way up the stone stairs into the large, grand venue where the fundraiser was being held.
It was all a very glamorous affair. You thought you might have even enjoyed yourself if the evening wasn't tarnished by the fact that you knew you were surrounded by some of the most violent and cruel people in New York. Mafia parties were no laughing matter. You may not have loved the people, but you loved any undercover operation where you got to dress up and act filthy rich for a night.
"Nat, talk to me," you whispered into your earpiece as you made your way into the banquet hall which was decked out with extravagant decoration and a large dance floor that was crawling with people. You looked out across the sea of people. Drinking, dancing, laughing. It was odd to think they were all weapons dealers just here to endorse a money laundering front.
"Hey, agent y/l/n. Are you in position?"
"Yep. This place is full of baddies. Finding one is going to be a challenge."
"Well don't worry," chuckled Natasha. "This guy'll stand out. He's a weapons kingpin. S.H.I.E.L.D caught him sneaking into places he shouldn't be. Experimenting with alien weaponry, selling it on the black market, et cetera et cetera. You know the drill. You need to find him and take him out. Try to keep him alive for interrogation, but kill if you have to."
"Copy that," you whispered, strolling out onto the dance floor. You spotted your target after just moments. He was surrounded by tons and tons of other people, clearly the center of attention at this soiree. You were making your way across the room, formulating a plan to get him alone, the song changed and a pair of very familiar arms swept you up onto the dance floor.
"Loki?" you said in disbelief. The trickster god smirked as he put a hand on your waist and twirled you to a slow, marching Italian song.
"Hello there, darling."
You couldn't find anything to say. The world seemed to fall away as Natasha shouted in confusion into your earpiece and the music swelled around you. Loki twirled you out and in. "I seem to remember you being a bit more chatty last time we met," Loki said softly as he held you close and tight, stepping in time with the beat.
"I wasn't furious the last time we met," you said angrily. "What on Earth are you doing at a Mafia party in New York? You're supposed to be dead."
"Aren't I always," he chuckled as he dipped you suddenly, bringing your back up and pulling you even closer. "I told myself I'd never see you again, but I just really missed you is all. Is that so wrong?"
"No. What's wrong is you abandoning me on my mission. I let my guard down for you, Loki, and you used me. I was sent to kill you but I..."
"But you what, y/n," he asked as he twirled you away and back again.
"But I...fell in love with you. I thought you felt the same, but when I woke up the next morning, I found I was just another fling to you. You left me in a hotel room in Paris without a word of explanation as to where you'd gone. A few weeks later, I find out you're dead. I had almost forgiven you, you know. However, I've just now been reminded of how wrong that was, seeing you here alive and well. I guess I really was nothing to you."
You pulled free of his grip and tried to leave the dance floor, but he grabbed your hand and pulled you back. "Y/n, please. Just give me a chance to explain." The look in his eyes had changed. Now his cocky, arrogant look had been replaced with desperation and sorrow. The difference was subtle, only in his eyes, but you could see it. You gave in and returned to dancing with him.
"You have two minutes, Loki. After that I'm gone, and this time, I won't let my guard down. I can kill you in seconds and I know you know that. Now, spin me your story."
"Y/n, as much as I hate to say it, I love you. More than anything. I love you so much that I came here just to see you because I couldn't stand being away from you. I had to leave and fake my death because they were going to kill you if I didn't. Some of my old associates found me while we were together and knew that they could hurt you to get to me. I found out that night we spent in Paris and I left so that they would track me somewhere else and so that they would think you didn't matter enough to kill. A few days later, I faked my death so that they would think I was dead and have no reason to kill you even if they wanted to. Leaving that hotel room was one of the more difficult things I've had to do in my life, but I never went far. I always had my eyes on you in case someone tried to hurt you. I found out you'd be attending this party, the thought of seeing you again consumed me and I couldn't stop thinking about it. If you do not want me here, I'll leave right now and you'll never hear from me again, but I had to try y/n. I had to try."
The music slowed and you felt yourself falling back into love with Loki. "Damn it, Loki. You've always been so good at apologizing," you laughed. He smiled slyly and put a knuckle under your chin. "I'm so sorry I left y/n. I should've stayed and fought for you. I'll never ever leave again."
You sighed as the world swirled again. Your senses felt jostled and disoriented. You looked into Loki's sea green eyes and found yourself drawing closer to him. Closer and closer until finally you placed your lips on his and kissed him. You'd almost forgotten what it felt like. It was everything you'd been missing in your life the past few months. Loki was everything you wanted and everything you needed.
