Chapter Thirty Six - The Bartons
All of our bags tumbled out as soon as the ramp opened up and onto the lush grass that the Quinjet had landed on. My eyes darted around, but all I could see was a wall of tall pine trees on the right and rolling grassy hills with the occasional oak tree standing proudly. We all stood up and began to slowly walk out of the Quinjet, gathering up the pile of bags on the grass. That's when I finally got a proper look at where we were.
About 300 metres from where we had landed, there was a rather quaint two-story house made from white timber with a pale green roof. There were oak trees surrounding it, several of them with tire swings and even a couple with archery targets on them.
"Clint, why did you bring us here?" Demanded Nat, turned around to look at him with folded arms.
"You needed a safe place." He shrugged, throwing his backpack over his shoulder. "Here it is."
"Do you know how much danger you are putting them in?" She asked him. A couple of eyes immediately darted to Clint and Tony stepped forward accusingly.
"Danger?" He demanded.
"They're fine with it." Clint replied, beginning to walk towards the house.
"I don't think we are." Steve replied warily, his eyes darting around. I swallowed nervously and followed Clint and Nat towards the house, the others hesitantly following.
"Not you." Nat replied, shaking her head before looking over at all of us. "Them." She turned back around and nodded at the house. I squinted and saw three figures standing in the doorway of the house, two of them smaller than the one in the middle.
"Are they children?" Bruce asked cautiously.
"I'm not sure this is the best idea." Wanda said slowly as we drew closer to the house. That's when I could see a woman and standing next to her was what looked like an eight- or nine-year-old boy and a five- or six-year-old girl. When we came within fifty metres from the house, I saw that all of them were smiling at us, and the little girl broke away from the woman's grip, rushing towards Clint.
"Daddy!" She squealed as she ran. Clint crouched down, a big grin on his face as he opened up his arms and the girl ran into him, causing him to stumble slightly and chuckle as he hugged her back. The boy ran towards Clint as well and was taking in for a hug.
"Clint has children?" Steve said after we had all been standing there in silence, all of the Avenger's faces covered in shock. Nat nodded, tight lipped before the girl broke away from Clint and ran over to Nat, wrapping her arm's around Nat's leg. Nat broke out into a smile and bent down, picking up the girl and throwing her in the air before catching her, causing the girl to squeal happily.
"My Dad says you're Iron Man." The boy walked up to Tony, who was still not looking very pleased with the situation. "Can I see your helmet?"
"Absolutely not." Tony replied, possibly a little harshly. "That stuff is worth way more than what you can stuff in your little piggy bank."
"Stark." Clint said in a warning tone. Tony looked over at him.
"I'm not letting him get his grimy peanut butter and jelly hands all over my billion dollar creations." He replied. "Why did you even bring us here? We can't risk putting your family in danger."
"They're fine with it." Clint replied. "They know the risk." The woman began walking over to us and as she drew closer, I realized she was pregnant. Clint smiled happily at her, pulling her into a hug and kissing her quickly.
"This is my wife Laura." Clint introduced us all. "My son Cooper and my daughter Lila." The Avenger's murmured greetings, the air still very awkward.
"Are you sure okay with us intruding on you like this?" Nat asked, putting Lila down, who had begin to struggle in her arms upon spotting Thor's hammer he had put on the ground.
"It's fine." Laura smiled. "You should all come in and put your bags down. Some of them certainly look heavy." Clint gave Tony a pointed look, but Tony wasn't even looking, trying to carry as many of his bags as he could at one time so he didn't have to do more than one trip. We all began to walk towards to house, Thor prying Lila off his hammer, the little girl annoyed she couldn't lift it. Thor's touch was gentle and hesitant, like he didn't want to hurt her.
Inside the house looked as comfy as the outside, everything warm and welcoming. We walked down a hallway before it opened up to the left on a rather large lounge room and kitchen. There toys all over the floor and Laura hurried to clean them up as we all filled the area.
"Sorry about the mess." Laura smiled. "I didn't get much of a chance to clean up."
"Sorry again for intruding." Steve offered as we all stood around awkwardly, but Laura just waved her hand dismissively before hurrying off into the kitchen. Everyone slowly began drop their bags down and walked around the lounge room, looking at different things to try and clear the awkwardness from the air. My eyes darted around nervously as I stood there, not sure what to do. I saw movement out of the bottom of my eyes and saw Lila standing direction in front of me. I immediately took a couple of steps back in, not trusting myself near the little girl at all. I knew adults, like the Avengers, could defend themselves against me, but a little child most certainly couldn't.
"Who are you?" She asked me, smiling curiously up at me. "I haven't seen you before." My eyes darted to Loki who was standing closest to me and he gave me a comforting smile and nodded, urging me on.
"I-I'm Emily." I stammered, looking back down at Lila.
"Do you have a superpower?" Lila asked with excitement.
"Don't bother her Lila." Clint called out, walking over and nudging Lila away from me just as I visibly paled. "Why don't you help your Mum make some food?" The little girl nodded excitedly and ran off to the kitchen.
"Thanks." I said to Clint quietly. He nodded and turned to face all of the Avengers. "Now for sleeping arrangements, you will all have to sleep down here, in this lounge room. Two of you can fit on either couch, which will have to be pushed against the wall to make room on the floor. However, we don't actually have any spare mattresses, unless...". His sentence trailed off and he reluctantly looked over at Loki, who was leaning on the wall next to me, his arms folded.
"You want me to conjure up some mattresses." He said in a monotone voice, an annoyed expression on his face.
"We are going to be sleeping on the floor otherwise brother." Thor tried to reason with him. Loki muttered something under his breath before pushing off the wall and bringing his magic to his hands. He waved his hand over the lounge room and a stack of mattresses as tall as the ceiling appeared directly in the middle. Everyone slowly looked up at them and Clint glared at Loki, who just smirked and lent back against the wall.
"Well this is going to be fun to move." Nat murmured and everyone surrounded the mattress stack as Wanda used her magic to carefully pull the top mattress down, trying not to bump the light right next to them. I hovered around nervously, not sure what I could do to help. Wanda eventually got it down and took off the next two before Steve and Thor could reach the next ones.
Eventually, we had taken all of the mattresses down and Steve and Thor pushed the two couches to the walls, trying not to mark the timber underneath. Then, everyone began to grab a mattress and arrange it wherever they liked in the lounge room. I waited until they had all picked a place before I grabbed the leftover mattress and moved it to the furthest corner of the room, just next to one of the couches. Nat was the closest to me, and then Wanda, and Bruce who had taken the couch.
Most looked pretty happy with the sleeping arrangement, though Loki for one, did not look thrilled at all to be sleeping next to Thor, let alone in the same room as everyone else.
I sat down on my bed and drew my knees up to my chest, listening as everyone chatted about where they were sleeping or the house or jokingly complaining about having to listen to Thor snoring. The house was pretty nice, I had a feeling about it, that I was safe here. I hadn't seen the whole inside yet, so I didn't know if there could be hidden dangers, but for now, I felt safe.
"Freshly made lemonade." Laura announced and everyone looked up and smiled, standing to take a glass of the lemonade from the tray both she and Lila were holding out. I remained on my bed, politely declining the glass when Laura offered one to me. I wasn't exactly big on taking food and water from strangers, something HYDRA had taught me.
"Should we go outside?" Clint suggested. "It's a little cramped in here." Lila and Cooper ran to the closed door, the lemonade in the glasses in their hand almost spilling over.
"No running in the house!" Laura called out, smiling as she shook her head. Steve held the door open as everyone filed out. I waited for everyone to go first before I stepped through the door, Steve giving me a comforting smile, clearly noticing how out of place I felt.
I had to blink a couple of times for my eyes to adjust as I walked over to the table a little way off from the house where all of the Avengers were now sitting, minus Clint who was playing with Cooper and Lila. I moved to sit down in the spare chair between Laura and Wanda, looking down at my bracelets as I felt Laura look at me.
"You must be new." She said to me, her voice somehow comforting. "I haven't seen you before." I nodded and swallowed nervously, not sure what to say. My eyes darted up to her briefly and I saw her smiling softly at me before I had to look back down at my bracelets.
"We only found her about three weeks ago." Nat spoke up for me, causing me to look at her in relief. "She... wasn't in the best situation."
"Oh sweetheart." Laura's voice was sympathetic and she reached out to grab my hand to comfort me, but I immediately flinched away, knocking against Wanda slightly. Laura slowly retracted her hand and I remained looking down at my bracelets.
"Physical contact isn't exactly something she likes." Nat said and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Laura nodding slowly.
"I was going to tell you about it all." Clint spoke up, making his way over to the table, leaving Lila and Cooper to play on their own. "But I wasn't sure if HYDRA was going to find a way to get into my phone. I didn't want to risk exposing information."
"She was with HYDRA?" Laura repeated, realization filling her voice. The silence around the table made my ears buzz and I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing back all of my memories from the word 'HYDRA' being spoken.
"Emily." Wanda's soft voice reached my ears. "Emily, are you okay?" Are you all right?" I slowly looked up at her and swallowed, nodding slowly before I looked back down at my bracelets.
"Emie?" A young voice asked and I looked down next to me to see Lila standing there. "Can you come play with me?" She put her hands on my leg and I stiffened under her touch, trying not to flinch away. My throat tightened as I took in her innocent face and I felt my heart pound nervously.
"She can't right now sweetie." Laura said from next to me. "Why don't you go play with your brother?" Lila pouted but nodded, hurrying off to join her brother, and I felt like I could breathe again.
