chapter five
I have renewed inspiration for this story! I have figured out the plot and know what I am going to do with it. There will be loads of drama. Just...not yet. Once we get to the main part of the story. I know, I know, I'm taking my sweet time getting there.
Ages: Barbara- 23, Dick- 20, Cassandra- 15, Tim- 14
Cassandra woke with a start, her heart thudding in her chest. She rolled over in her bed and looked at her alarm clock. Two twenty in the morning. She squeezed her eyes closed, trying to will herself back to sleep and calm her nerves.
It was just a bad dream.
Cass groaned when she couldn't fall back asleep after fifteen minutes, dragging herself out of bed. Padding over to the door, she slipped her sneakers on, pulling a hoodie on as well before exiting her room and making her way towards the back entrance of the manor. She slinked outside, strolling through the dark yard towards the family cemetery.
Pushing open the gates, Cassandra walked through the headstones until she got to the one she was looking for, sitting down in front of it with a solemn expression.
Jason Todd
Beloved Son And Brother.
August 16, 2004 - April 27, 2020
Cassandra put a hand against the tombstone, running her fingers over the engravings. A tear ran down her cheek as she remembered his vibrant laugh and his infectious smile.
"Jason...I'm sorry. Should've...been there. For you. Should've helped somehow. Helped search. Gone with you. Maybe...maybe you would still...be here. I...miss you. So much. I love you, big brother." Cassandra wiped her eyes, sniffling.
She stood up and made her way back into the manor after a few more minutes of sitting by Jason's grave side, reminiscing about him. Closing the door behind her, she turned around, letting out a soft gasp when she saw Tim standing at the edge of the hallway. He looked equally surprised to see her. "Cass...what are you doing up?"
She glanced at the door. "Talking with Jason. You?"
Tim inhaled sharply, letting out a shaky breath. "Yeah, me too. I-I mean, I was about to head out there myself."
Cass smiled at Tim, a small, sad thing of a grin. "He wouldn't be mad. At you. For being Robin. He would...be proud."
Tim nodded, looking at the ground. "You think?"
"Yes." Cassandra walked up to Tim, putting a hand on his shoulder. "You're his brother. He'd want you to be the next Robin."
Tim smiled back at Cass. "Thanks, sis. I...I needed to hear that." He blew out a raspberry. "Well, I'm going to head out there. You going back to bed?"
Cass shrugged. "I might train. Can't sleep."
Tim nodded in understanding. "Nightmares?"
Cass looked away. "Yes."
"Cass-"
"I'm fine. Go talk to Jason." Cassandra squeezed Tim's shoulder, brushing past him to walk further into the manor. She caught a glimpse of the clock on the kitchen stove as she passed it, reading five past three in the morning. She sighed.
Going into the kitchen, she walked up to the cupboard with the tea in it, finding the one she was looking for. She put a pot on, sitting on the counter as she waited for it to boil. Swinging her legs back and forth, Cassandra contemplated turning the water off and going down to the cave to train. She decided she would see how she felt after drinking the chamomile tea.
After getting her cup of tea, she walked back up to her room, sitting at her desk. She unplugged her phone, deciding to see if Barbara was awake. She sent her a quick text, waiting on a reply.
When one didn't come, she tried her brother Dick.
He called her thirty seconds later.
"Hey, Cass. What're you doing up? You didn't have patrol tonight."
Cass smiled at the veiled concern in his voice. "I know. Couldn't sleep."
She heard Dick sigh on the other side of the line and what sounded like a grapple hook. "Nightmares?" She hummed in response. "Did you talk with Jason?"
"Yes. And Tim. Kind of."
"And did you try-"
"Drinking now. I know the routine, big brother." Cassandra laughed a little, starting to feel slightly better.
"So you know if that doesn't work-"
"Training is next. Yes."
"Actually, I was going to say talking with B is. Training might not be the best thing, depending on the theme of your nightmare."
Cass narrowed her eyes. "You know what it is. What it always is." Dick sighed again. "Training helps. Always helps me."
"Cassandra, I'm on my way to the manor. I assume Tim is still awake. We can put a movie on, you pick. Something light hearted, to take your mind off of things, okay? How does that sound?"
Cass closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Okay. Sure. Sounds good. See you soon?"
"You bet."
Cass hung up, finishing her tea in three gulps. She brought the cup back down to the kitchen after changing into sweats. She found Tim entering the manor, his eyes red rimmed. She gave him a knowing look but said nothing of his appearance, instead telling him of Dick's plans. Tim sounded more enthusiastic than Cassandra felt. He ran upstairs to change, grabbing blankets as well to make things even cozier.
Within forty five minutes of hanging up her call with Dick, Cassandra found herself snuggled up on the couch with her two living brothers, watching Brave with a mountain of blankets piled on top of them.
