Chapter XXIX: The Cliff that Time forgot
(Special thanks from Craftfury, Dang I love working with you!)
Steven woke up and was happy to start the day, as usual. He saw Michael was holding his forehead as if he was studying for some sort of final exam, although the table was completely empty. Robert, on the other hand, was staring emotionlessly into the ceiling. It almost looked like he was dead.
"What's wrong, guys?" he asked.
"Our parents are in a zoo..." Michael groaned. "Pink told us in a dream."
Steven thought for a moment. "I-If it makes you feel any better, my mom had to cease to exist to give birth to me...sort of..." he said. Robert looked over at Steven. "What did you dream about?" Robert asked. Steven thought for a moment. "It was weird...It looked like a giant blue lady in a hood mourning at some sort of grave, and I was crying someone else's tears...and...it was from the perspective of someone standing beside her..." Steven explained. Michael's interest peaked. "Wait...you said a 'giant blue lady'?" Michael asked. "Does she resemble...a ghost in any way?"
"Yeah! How did you know?" Steven asked.
"Faceplate, Steven. It's like a Pokedex for Gems and Diamonds alike, although Yellow Diamond's article was super biased." Michael explained.
Just then, a rumble was heard outside, followed by Yellow Pearl entering the door. "My Diamond wants to see you, Michael. You too, Robert." she said. The boys looked at each other, then walked outside to see the titular cousin of Spongebob standing on the beach.
"What do you want, Giraffichu?" Michael asked.
"I take it I need to know more about Earth culture to know what that insult is supposed to mean" Yellow Diamond sighed. "Anyway, that's not what I'm here for."
"Then what do you want, Spongebob Electropants?" Michael asked impatiently. Yellow Diamond sighed and put a hand to her forehead.
"I've been thinking of that fight we had the other day, and I noticed Robert had a weapon and you did not, other than that silly plastic firearm." Yellow Diamond explained. "And I felt guilty for fighting you without a weapon, so I thought of making you a sword akin to your brother's, but my followers didn't gather enough material to make the blade, so we settled for another option: a scythe." Yellow Pearl then drew a scythe that looked like it belonged in a summer Hollywood blockbuster or the cover of a Five Finger Death Punch album. Michael smiled.
"I improved your arm-cannon so you could take it off at any time, and made it so it grows with you, as well as some other upgrades." Yellow Pearl explained.
"Consider this an apology." Yellow Diamond stated as she and her pearl entered the arm spaceship and left.
Michael and Robert entered the house, with Garnet, Pearl, Connie, and Amethyst standing at the door with their weapons drawn.
"...What?" Michael asked as if he returned from Starbucks.
"She...didn't hurt you, did she?" Connie asked.
"No." Michael responded as if the thought of Yellow Diamond hurting anyone was absurd.
"Did she do anything to you? Do you feel ill?" Pearl asked.
"No, she just gave me a scythe and arm cannon and left." Michael explained.
"It's true, I saw the whole thing." said Robert.
"Does it mess with your head like the faceplate?" asked Amethyst.
"No, the arm cannon just kept me from using my hands when I thought I needed the cannons, which was to say at the time, a lot. But now that I can think straight, I can use it at will," said Michael as he put the cannon on his left wrist.
"She...also gave you a scythe?" asked Garnet. Michael showed it to the Gems. They were rather impressed with the structure and build of this weapon.
"I think you could use some training with this weapon...Unfortunately, I...don't know how to use a scythe," said Pearl.
"It's essentially the same thing as a spear, except the point is on the side and not the top," said Michael.
"Hey, I'd hate to get off-topic, but I just remembered something. When I was in Lion's mane the other day, I saw some sort of bubble containing...what appeared to be an upside-down pyramid," explained Robert.
"What were you doing in there?" asked Amethyst.
"It's where I keep my diary," said Robert, blushing in embarrassment. "Want me to keep it somewhere else?"
"Steven, do you know what he's talking about?" asked Pearl.
Steven pondered for a moment. "I think I know." he said as he jumped into Lion's mane. A nimute later, he came out holding a pink bubble containing the upside-down pyramid Robert was talking about. Steven popped the bubble and the prism dropped to the floor before levitating and forming a grey body around it.
"Where am I?" the strange gem asked.
"...Bismuth..." Garnet gasped.
"...Garnet? Pearl?" the gem said before turning to Robert and Michael. "Random humans I don't know."
"I'm so glad you're okay. We haven't seen you for over (five thousand?) years! Rose told me she misplaced you." Pearl cried.
"So you must be a Bismuth, I heard you were great at making weapons and construction." said Michael, hoping Bismuth would be flattered.
"How does a human know who I am, let alone my specialty?" Bismuth asked.
"Excuse my brother, he had a faceplate made by Yellow Diamond that told him everything he needed to know." said Robert.
"Don't worry though, my allegiance is with the Crystal Gems" Michael clarified.
Bismuth's eyes widened. "Wait...so you and your brother somehow went against Yellow Diamond....and lived?" she asked excitedly.
"Y-yeah, I would've dealt the killing blows, if SOMEone wasn't such a wuss!" said Michael, softly punching Robert.
"I didn't spare everyone..." said Robert, hanging his head in shame as he walked to his pillowcase to pull out the shards of Hessonite. "What weapon did you use?" asked Bismuth. Robert went to the closet to pull out his sword.
"The Resistance was looking for that blade ever since we got word of the- wait...Are you telling me that..." Bismuth stammered before sitting on Steven's couch, trying to wrap her head around this news.
"What's with her?" asked Robert.
"I thought the prophecy was a fairytale." Bismuth gasped. "Just a fairytale to try to get us to respect humans."
"You wanna go to your smithing area to cool off?" asked Robert. Bismuth smiled and put a hand on Robert's shoulder. "Alright. Let's go...All of us." Bismuth replied as everyone stepped on the warp pad, with Bismuth leading the way.
They appeared on a cliffside that looked like it has seen better days. They kept walking until they found the only flat surface on the wall. Bismuth's gem began to glow, and the flat surface opened into a hall of sliding stone doors.
In the area looked to be several different kinds of weapons, armor, and other things. It was rather hot in there. So hot, in fact, that Michael's ice powers didn't work.
She started by opening a chest containing odd pieces that couldn't be used on their own.
Garnet summoned her gauntlets and Pearl summoned her spear. Bismuth gave Garnet what appeared to be spiked brass knuckles and Pearl what appeared to be a square horseshoe. "Try these." she said. The parts snapped to the weapons like Legos, making the spear now a trident and the gauntlets now much more effective gauntlets. Amethyst couldn't help but feel left out, and Robert took notice of this.
"Hey, Bismuth...I think Amethyst could use an upgrade." Robert said. Bismuth took a look at Amethyst's whip. "You know, not just any quartz can make a whip like this." she said as she turned around with the whip in her hands, fiddling with all sorts of upgrades before giving Amethyst what appeared to be a morning star. "Try a flail" she said as Amethyst whipped the air and the tip split into three smaller tips. Amethyst's eyes sparkled in awe of the upgrade.
"We are back in Bismuth!" Bismuth yelled. Robert groaned at the pun while Michael and Steven chuckled a bit.
"Show me that sword again, would you?" said Bismuth to Robert, who obliged. "You wouldn't happen to have a shield with you, too, would you?" she asked. Robert shook his head. Bismuth sighed. "Your offense is only as good as your defense" Bismuth stated as she found a strong piece of metal to hammer into some sort of polygon.
Bismuth then found two pieces of leather and strapped them side by side parallel to one another to make a decent handle for it and gave it to Robert.
Despite the shield's thickness, it felt surprisingly light to Robert. Bismuth then looked at Michael's arm cannon, then noticed something.
"You don't have anything in the ranged department, do you?" Bismuth asked, Robert pulled out his Zapper. Bismuth couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"It's out of ammo, though." Robert said.
"How do you run out of ammo for a light gun?" asked Amethyst. Robert pulled the trigger, and nothing happened. "Probably because it's a video game accessory and not an actual weapon." answered Michael.
Bismuth took Robert's sword and made sure to be extra careful with the blade when adding some sort of enhancement. "Now try it." Bismuth said as she handed Robert's sword back. Robert swung his sword in front of a mannequin, and the swing made some sort of shockwave that cut it clean in half. Robert then put the sword in it's sheath on his back. Robert didn't know how to out his shield away, at least in a way that's quick, easy, and he can get it out in less than a second in case there was a threat coming at a high speed.
Bismuth thought for a moment and took the shield to make it more versatile. Now it was more like a sleeve on his lower arm. When Robert got tense in his arm, the straps turned into a shield.
Robert took Michael's scythe and gave it to Bismuth and asked her to make an upgrade for his brother. Bismuth took a long hard look at the scythe, and made the blade much tougher by layering it with another alloy.
When Bismuth gave Michael back his scythe, Michael couldn't help grin really wide.
"Blue Diamond better have a lot more than lightning up her sleeves!" Michael said to himself.
When they returned to the house, Robert and Michael made a beeline for the Sky Arena to test their new weapons. Bismuth followed behind to watch her upgrades in use.
For some reason, Steven looked troubled.
"What's wrong, Steven?" Garnet asked.
"Why is it that my mom talks to Robert and Michael in their dreams, but not me? It's not fair." Steven cried as he kicked Sir Bearington across the house.
Michael, who just got back was hit in the face with the bear. Steven didn't care though. In fact, judging from his expression, it looked like it was the best outcome to him. Michael wasn't phased by it, though. Michael just laughed it off.
"Yo, you left your teddy bear here!" Michael yelled. Steven just turned around with his back facing Michael.
"...Steven?" said Michael as his older brother got on the warp pad alongside him. Steven stayed silent, arms folded, and Michael saw that Steven was angry for some reason.
"What's wrong, bro?" Michael asked.
"Why does mom talk to you more than me?" Steven complained. Michael didn't know what to say.
"Trust me, when we see her again, we'll ask her." Robert said. "I'd be mad too if my real mom talked to you more than me."
"But tell you what: For now, me and Robert are gonna go to Fish Stew, pick up a couple Supreme 16 inch pizzas and a 36-pack of cokes, come back, and we'll watch some YouTube" Michael added. "What do you say?"
"It's going to rain out there, so be careful" said Garnet. Steven smiled and hugged Robert and Michael before they left.
When Robert and Michael came out of Fish Stew Pizza, it began to rain, and the same tall figure from Steven's birthday party stood outside, and it looked like he had a bone to pick with Robert. "You think you're hot stuff, huh?" he asked. Robert and Michael ignored him. "Yeah, you, with the stupid haircut" it said. Robert still ignored him, but Michael glared at the guy. "Not you, kid. The moron next to you." it taunted, The figure started to follow them.
"Look, creep, we don't know who you are or what your deal is, but you better leave us alone!" yelled Michael. Robert turned around.
"Or what?" the figure asked with a malicious grin.
"Or you're gonna have a bad time, Kevin!" Robert growled. The figure backed up a bit. "H-H-How do you know my name's Kevin?" he asked.
"We're more than human. So you better back up before you get jacked up!" Michael yelled. Kevin got out a knife and smiled once again.
"Oh, you think I can't cut up a couple 'more than humans'?" Kevin laughed. "I was at the top of my class at when I took karate!"
...
...
"You're lying!" Robert and Michael said in unison. Kevin charged at the two, but Michael summoned his arm cannon and pointed it at Kevin.
Kevin stopped in his tracks.
"Get! Back!!" Michael growled in a much deeper voice than his normal one.
Kevin ran off. "Shows him right!" Michael said as he retracted his arm cannon. "It's 'serves' him right, and you use it when he gets what he deserves." Robert corrected.
"How did you know his name was Kevin, by the way?" Michael asked as they walked back to the beach house.
"We have telepathy" said Robert. Michael thought for a moment, then tried it on his brother.
"You're thinking of Lapis, aren't you?!" Michael teased. Robert blushed.
"Yeah...She's beautiful..." he replied. They ran back to the house after that, because nobody likes a soggy pizza.
When they got there, Lion was sleeping on the couch where Michael usually sleeps, and Steven was downloading the YouTube app on his Switch. Robert and Michael were drenched, but the pizza and 2-liters were still okay.
"What took so long?" Steven asked.
"Kevin tried to mug us," Robert said as he opened the top pizza box to reveal a still hot and ready pizza.
"He ran off when I showed him one of my new toys." Michael added. They high fived each other and gave Steven the pizza and opened the 36-pack. "Steven gets the first pick for the video." Robert announced. "And we're doing oldest to youngest" Steven and Michael lit up.
"What kinds of videos are we gonna watch?" Steven asked.
"Whatever we want, little man!" said Michael as they put the pizza in front of Steven and laid on either side of him. After a while, they fell asleep, and the switch shut down
