Dam

Nut weed flowers,

tenderly lilac-lovely and sprig-starred.

Chook-favoured, they are tweezered out

by eager beaks

small honeyed, snack-sized treats -

nature's takeaway gleaned from spike-bladed grasses.

Dam bank is wisely sentried.

The vigilant drake barrage-balloons up,

white tail feathers warning all worried,

new generation protectors -

suspect entity approaching fast.

He draws fire, heroically low-streaks across

Glycol*-rainwater, almost oil-slick heavy,

suspended with fine debris

from the adjoining catchment paddocks.

Silty nutrient comprising khaki-clover cow-projectiles

prompted by too much rain-tickled-rich feed

turning the dam to muddy green tea.

I leisurely crest

the Uffington Horse-like hillock,

stop, suck back breath

for the sun makes sharded-confetti-scatterings

of the up-beaked fluctuating

semi-masticated, Ghost Buster-glowing, reedy lumps

weirdly set adrift by scavenging swans.

Black swans,

indigenous-dark with bloodily lipsticked beaks -

a comment on un-histrionic bleeding.

They yodelo,

knowing

I have suspiciously materialised

a ghost wearing unnatural fluoro-pink.

*Technical term for anti-freeze, can be green or red, in this case an oily green.
