chapter vi.

chapter six – ghosts.

Sage could only look highly entertained as her, Chris dressed in a monk costume, Ashley, and Josh sat a table as Chris held up the spirit board excitedly. Chris and Ashley had been sent on a hunt for the spirit board as Josh, Sam, and Sage ventured down to the basement to turn on the hot water, and be scared by Chris but Sage would rather not talk about that part of her night.

" So it says here: "to communicate with the spirit world you must free your mind of all preconceptions, drop all inhibitions, and generally give yourself over entirely to the will of others, sublimating your every desire to the whims of the spirit-master", " Sage covers her mouth with her hand as she tries her hardest not to laugh as Chris continues, " Which obviously is me– "

" It so does not say that. " Sage scoffs while shaking her head before Chris continued with whatever he was reading from.

" And all present will remove their garments at my sole discretion– " Chris is cut off by Josh, who looks more impatient than anything else in Sage's opinion.

" Come on, Chris, " Josh states, his voice showing how annoyed he was getting with Chris's antics. " This is serious– "

" I'm deadly serious. " Chris smirks as he finally places the spirit board on the table.

" Oh shush it, let's try this. " Ashley sighs as the four finally focus on the spirit board laying ontop of the table.

" Yes please. " Josh sighs before all of them place their hands on top of the board.

" Okay then. Let's see what happens, " Chris says, almost excitedly, as he turns his head to look at Ashley. " Ashley, since you're a recent convert, why don't you be our medium for the day? "

Sage quickly reached to her left and smacked Chris upside the head, ignoring Chris's dramatic yell, " Chris, she changed religions. She's not a magician. "

Ashley smiles at Sage gratefully before sighing and focusing on the spirit board as the other three grow quiet again while placing a hand on top of the planchette, " Okay. . Um. . Anyone there? Will you reveal yourself to us. . If you're there? "

The planchette doesn't move for a minute making Sage grow annoyed, were they doing this for nothing? She sighs before moving to get up, " If this isn't going to mo– "

The planchette started to move almost immediately after Sage started talking as the four immediately watch it with wide eyes and questioning each other on if this was all just a joke or not.

" Wait a minute– " Chris says while leaning forward in his seat.

" Did you do that? " Josh asks Sage immediately making her shake her head.

" Fuck no! " Sage denies as she doesn't tear her eyes away from the planchette.

" It's moving again! " Chris cries out.

" H. . " Ashley calls out as the planchette continues to move across the board.

" Holy shit. " Sage whispers before looking across the table at Ashley, " What's it spelling? "

" Hold on. " Ashley snaps not taking her eyes off the moving planchette.

" How's this happening? " Josh demands glancing at the others.

" Are you moving it.. ? " Chris asks Ashley, raising an eyebrow.

" I swear it's just moving! " Ashley denies the accusation immediately.

" Holy shit. " Josh repeats Sage's earlier words in a whisper as the planchette finishes moving and ending up on the letter p.

" 'Help'? " Ashley asks in confusion as she reveals what the planchette spelled out.

" How are we supposed to help? " Chris asks furrowing his eyebrows, feeling as confused as Ashley felt.

" I don't know, " Ashley shrugs. Sage felt bad for the girl, she really did. She had no idea that a spirit board would put this much stress on Ashley, " What does that mean? "

" We need to know who it is if we're supposed to help them. " Sage speaks up making Ashley nod and finally continue questioning the unknown spirit.

" How can we 'help' you? " Ashley questions instead before the planchette starts moving again.

" It's moving again. " Chris calls out as the room grows tense.

" Whoa. " Josh mutters.

" What's it spelling? " Ashley asks as the planchette continues moving more that it did the first time.

" Wait and see. " Sage snaps as Chris calls out the letters.

" War..? " Chris calls out unsure before trying again as more letters were revealed, " Warni..? "

" Shit. " Josh mutters shaking his head.

" Oh my god.. Warning? " Ashley wonders staring down at the planchette.

" We really need to find out who's talking to us. " Sage mutters making Ashley nod in agreement.

" . . We can't help you out if we don't know who you are. Can you tell us who you are? " Ashley asks, her voice revealing how nervous she was getting. The planchette starts moving again making everyone grow even more nervous, " Oh, it's moving again– "

The planchette moves all over the board before finally spelling out sister. Ashley, Chris, and Sage look at Josh worriedly, but he was still staring at the spirit board.

" Sister? " Ashley says as Sage remains quiet. She knew it had to be Hannah or Beth, that was the only possible answer.

" Whose sister? " Josh asks, more like demands, but the planchette remains still on the board.

" Oh come on is this for real? " Chris asks as he looks around doubtfully.

" Shut up. " Josh snaps at Chris before turning to Ashley, " Ask it whose sister it is. "

" Josh. . " Sage looks at Josh with pity as she squeezes his upper arm comfortingly. " You know whose sister it is. We all do by now. "

" Yeah? Okay. " Josh scoffs before turning his head back to Ashley, " Ask it which sister it is then. "

" Who are we speaking too? . .Hannah? Is that you? " Ashley calls out looking down at the spirit board:

The planchette quickly moves to yes making Ashley and Sage gasp in surprise.

" Oh god. " Sage frowns before glancing at Josh, who was looking more tense than upset which confused the brunette.

" This is messed up. " Chris frowns as Ashley asks Josh if he was okay.

" I'm fine. " Josh shakes his head and denies Ashley and Chris's offers to stop, " I want to hear what it says.

" I don't know what to say. . " Ashley trails off frowning.

" Think about it. If it's actually Hannah, We can finally find out what happend that night. . " Chris tells Ashley before she finally nods.

" Hannah, if you can hear this. . like really hear this. . We all want to apologize for what happend. " Ashley apologizes to Hannah's spirit making Sage's mood lighten a little bit. Sage may have had nothing to do with the prank, but they all knew what had happend was wrong.

" It was stupid and mean and we're sorry. . " Chris adds as Josh continues to stay quiet.

" We're so sorry Hannah. . " Ashley finishes her and Chris's apology before the planchette finally started moving again and Ashley started to call out the letters. " B– E– T– R– "

Ashley, Chris, and Sage all state their protests, but no one moves to stop the planchette from moving. Curiousity got the better of them.

" 'Betrayed'. " Chris states quietly.

" What does she mean– " Josh asks, but was cut off by Chris revealing that the planchette was still moving.

" Oh God– " Ashley cries out hysterically, " K– I– L– L– E– D– No! "

" Killed? " Josh repeats as all four of them start to panic.

" We didn't kill them! It was just a prank! " Ashley tells Josh, hoping to calm Josh down, but was still hysteric.

" Ash, calm down, okay? " Chris tells the redhead as Sage nodded in agreement. " Just– We need to find out more! "

" Okay. Okay. " Ashley mutters to herself before questioning Hannah's spirit again. " Who killed you?Hannah? Who was it? "

The planchette starts moving once again as everyone follows it, Ashley continues to call out the letters.

" L– I– B– " Ashley spells out as the planchette continues moving.

" 'Library'! Maybe there's something in the library here– " Chris suggests but the planchette continued to move forcing Chris to cut himself off.

" P– R– O– O– " Ashley spells out the second word before the planchette finally stopped moving.

" 'Proof'! There's. . there's. . there's proof. " Chris summarizes the word as everyone was quiet.

" There's proof in the library? " Ashley suggests raisng an eyebrow.

The spirit board suddenly shakes and flies off the table directly at Sage, the planchette hitting Sage and scratching her eyebrow, the four jump back and look at each other in shock.

" Watch out! " Josh shouts, glancing at Sage and frowning when he noticed the bleeding cut on the middle of Sage's right eyebrow.

" Whoa! " Chris cries out as he and Ashley look at each other in concern.

" You know what? No, this is bullshit. " Josh shakes his head as he gets up from his chair while staring the three down. " This isn't real– "

" Josh– I don't know what's going on. . " Ashley tries to tell the Washington, but he wasn't going to listen to her right now.

" Listen, I don't know. . I don't know if you think messing with me is somehow going to help me with my grief or whatever but this is not cool. " Josh hisses at the three who were still shocked about everything that has happend.

" Josh no! You wanted to use the spirit board– " Ashley snaps back, still sounding hysterical.

" Hey, calm down! " Chris tells Josh, coming to his crush's defense. " It's not Ash's fault! "

" I don't need this right now, okay?! You guys are full of it! " Josh snaps before he ended up storming off and leaving Sage, Chris, and Ashley still sitting at the table.

" Well– " Sage sighs before pausing as she finally felt the blood coming down the right side of her face. " Shit. "

" Oh my god, Sage, " Ashley stares at the shorter girl worriedly, " You're bleeding! "

" Obviously! " Sage snaps as she reaches up to touch the cut before immediately pulling her hand back with a hiss. " Ow. "

" Sh- Should we go after him? " Ashley looks back at where Josh stormed off too as Chris shakes his head.

" Ah man. . I think he'll be okay. " Chris shrugs as Sage nods in agreement. " Let's. . Let's just give him some time. "

" I don't blame him. . that was crazy. . The pointer flew right off the table and hurt Sage! " Ashley cried out as Chris nodded.

" I mean if– if you were faking it you were doing one hell of a job. " Chris tells Ashley while shrugging.

" I wasn't faking anything. . I think we should do what it says. We should look in the library. . " Ashley says as Sage shakes her head, she needed to go clean her eyebrow and check on Josh. " Sage, are you coming? "

" No, " Sage shakes her head as she starts the walk the opposite way of the library and gestures at the cut on her head, " I need to clean this up and check on Josh. He's hurting. "

Ashley and Chris both nod and bid the brunette goodbye before heading the opposite way that Sage was heading.

Oh. How Sage was going to wish that she went with Chris and Ashley in the next few minutes.
