Chapter Five

You know that feeling when you're in a dream, and you feel like you're falling? Then you wake up right before you hit the ground. This morning, that's kind of what happened to me.

"Alek!" screamed my sister.

I didn't really know what was going on. I had fallen, and my head hurt. Badly.

"Alek, what the hell was that?" she stammered, trying to get me on my feet. I was on the floor. Why exactly? I didn't know.

"What happened?" I asked her.

"You were... on the ceiling. Sleeping I think, but when I came in, you fell. What was that? What haven't you been telling me?" she blurted out.

"I was sleeping on the ceiling? All I remember is falling, what's going on?"

"I don't know, I thought you knew!" she yelled back at me.

I ran my hands through my hair as I sat on the bed. My head was pounding. I looked to the clock sitting on my desk.

"Shoot, Amber, we're going to be late for school!" I exclaimed, grabbing my things and rushing downstairs.

She cursed and followed after me, pulling on her outer-wear. "We're talking about this later," she warned.

We ran out of the door and nearly all the way to school. It's a very bad idea to run in the cold, but we couldn't afford to miss school.

Luckily Amber and I arrived right on time, if not a little tardy. We rushed to our respective classes, eager to forget about the events in the morning.

Time passed quickly, as my mind was occupied which Amber's strange statements. I had been stuck to the ceiling? That made no logical sense. I tried to think of a reasonable reason why I was up there, but came up with nothing. The only feasible option was that Amber was pranking me, although it was unlikely.

The periods flew by, and soon I was making my way to lunch. I met up with Amber in the halls.

"Are you going to sit with us again?" she asked hopefully.

I shook my head. "Not feeling up to it. There was something special about yesterday, I'm all drained out now."

She grabbed my shoulder. "C'mon, it'll be fine. You don't have to say a word."

I groaned, but didn't resist. She led me to her table, grabbing my arm like I was going to try and escape any second.

The instant I sat down, I regretted my decision. Everybody wanted to talk to me. Jack even started saying something about hanging out later, but I wasn't paying attention. Soon enough the chatter directed away from me, but they would still try and involve me in the conversation once in a while.

"Alek?" questioned Noah. He was sitting directly to my left today. "Could you take a look at this diagram again? I know you said it looked fine yesterday but I really think something is wrong."

I grabbed the paper he offered to me. My mind was clear.

"Here..." I pointed. "There's no way this piston is receiving enough power, which in turn effects the momentum of that cylinder. That will mess up the whole balanced of the machine."

"But I routed extra power through the converter," he protested.

"No, the converter doesn't have any extra power to give, the way it's designed it always has one output. You're going to need another one," I finished.

"Really? I had no idea. I thought it just took whatever you put inside and put out the same amount?"

"That's a machine for the future Noah," I sarcastically chirped.

He muttered to himself and stuffed the paper in his bag.

"Hey Alek, what's up with your hair?" asked Drew. My sister and the rest of the table looked over to me immediately. I patted my hair. It was pretty fluffy.

"I don't know," I said, suddenly feeling chatty. "What were you guys talking about?"

"Annabelle has a crush," cooed Kali.

Annabelle, who was the girl with dark hair and blue eyes, blushed and turned away from everyone.

"So?" she whispered. "Keep it on the down low!"

Everyone laughed. My knees hit the top of the table, resulting in a loud bang. Everyone looked at me again.

"Woah, Alek your hair!" yelped Kali.

My sister grabbed onto my arm with a grip that could leave bruises. She chuckled awkwardly. That's weird, huh? Must be static electricity," she mentioned.

She was wrong, it couldn't be, although I couldn't think of why. I felt myself lift off the chair before Amber's arm pulled me back down again.

Noah mumbled something to himself. I'm sure he knew why.

Jack looked at Amber, concerned. "You look pale. Well—much more pale than normal. Are you okay?" he asked.

Amber coughed into her arm a little. "Actually, I'm feeling kind of sick. I think I'm going to check in with the office and go home, bye!" she rambled off, grabbing me and dragging me to the office.

My feet were hardly touching the floor. This was fun. I laughed to myself again. Amber's grip on my arm tightened as she attempted to keep me on the ground.

She rushed into the office and feigned sickness, and quickly signed us both out.

"Let's go," she grumbled, dragging me along the empty hallways.

I didn't really understand the cause for concern. "What's wrong?" I asked.

"What's wrong?" she replied, obviously frustrated. "You're floating in the air during school, that's what's wrong!" she whisper-yelled.

Now that she mentioned it, that did explain a lot. Like why my feet couldn't touch the ground, and why my shirt kept hitting my face.

I still didn't understand the rush, but followed her into the school's foyer anyways.

She quickly threw my outer-wear on me and herself and rushed out the door. Once we were outside, she motioned for me to jump on her back. At first I was confused, because she used a lot of hand signals that didn't really go together, but after some frustrated motions, I got the idea.

I easily bounded up into the air, and grabbed onto her back. She locked her arms around me to keep from floating off as she ran home.

About halfway there, I felt a heavy feeling descend on me, and I felt her shoulders start to dig into my thighs. Amber pushed me off, and kept going, motioning for me to follow.

As soon as we arrived, I threw off my jacket and boots and rushed inside.

"Oh no, there's no way you're going anywhere after what just happened," she commanded as she burst into the kitchen after me.

I started to wolf down some food, but she sat me down in a kitchen chair before I had the chance to chew.

"Stay here." She walked over to the cabinets as I chewed through my cold potato. She came back with a rope, and threw it around my body before I could protest.

"You are not going anywhere, not before we figure this out," she said, tying me up.

"Seriously, what gives? I didn't notice anything super weird today, or this morning," I stated. "You're not just kidding around?" Her serious face was an affirmation.

I gaped at her as she walked out the door. "If mother and father get home before me, tell them what happened," she demanded. I could barely nod before she slammed the foyer door.

The rest of the day was boring, absolutely mind-numbingly boring. I tried to get out of the ropes several times, but she doesn't joke around. I don't know how she learned to tie knots that tightly, but whoever taught her was a good teacher.

I spent my time thinking. Thinking about nothing. Why was I floating? What was going on? I couldn't rationalize anything. I was still having those weird mood swings too, even just sitting here, tied up in a chair. I just got so... bubbly. I would laugh out loud at my own thoughts, and I didn't have a care in the world. It was the strangest thing.

These periods didn't last too long, perhaps half an hour. Afterwards I would suddenly feel tired and mopey again, but more rational. It was the most bizarre sensation.

It was far too long before my parents came home. Imagine their surprise when they found me, alone, tied up to a chair. I don't know what fact was more surprising, that I was tied to a chair, or that Amber wasn't with me.

The look on their faces made me giggle. It was one of those moods again.

"What's going on?" yelled my father, dropping his bags on the floor and running over to me.

"Amber tied me up," I confessed.

My mother walked over, much more calmly. The confusion on her face was still apparent, but less so than my father's. "Why did she do this to you? Did you get in a fight?" she questioned, sounding astonished.

"She said I was floating or something," I replied nonchalantly. The reason didn't seem to matter, I just wanted to get out of these stupid ropes. "Can you untie me please?" I looked towards my stunned father.

"Sure," he nodded and started untying the ropes behind me.

The phone started to ring, my mother picked it up.

"Hello, this is the Gisli household," she answered. A moment of silence passed while my father worked on my binds.

"Yes he's my son. You'd like to talk to him?" she looked back at me, confused. I wasn't expecting a phone call, but I smiled and nodded anyways, ready to take on whatever it was.

"Yes, he's right here, I'll hand you over." I stretched out my untied hand and held the receiver to my ear.

"Hello?" said the voice on the other side.

"Hello, this is Alek, who is this?" I replied.

"Oh, this is Jack, we met at lunch? I'm Amber's friend."

I smiled. "Oh! I wasn't expecting a call. It's nice to hear from you."

"Yeah. You left kind of quickly, is Amber okay?"

"Just a little cold. She's fine now."

"Great! Well this Friday Noah and I were going to hang out at my house, and we were wondering if you wanted to come?"

I grinned. My mother looked at me, pretty confused. I rolled back my shoulders as my father untied the last of the ropes around my chest.

"Sure! I'd love to come," I answered. Can you give me your address?"

I heard a small scream from my mother as he listed off a house address. He wasn't all that far away from our house.

"Alright! I'll see you then!" I replied as I hung up the phone.

My mother gasped as my father untied the ropes around my legs. "Alek—your hair!" she yelped.

I patted my hair. It was really poofy, more than usual. My father untied my feet as I laughed and patted it down. It was fun to play with.

I felt a grip on my leg.

"Alek, what's going on!?" my father yelled from the floor. I was closer to the ceiling than him, I guess that's why he was grabbing my leg.

My mother stumbled back. I don't think I've ever seen the top of her head this way. "My Lord, your sister wasn't kidding..." she gasped.

I smiled and pushed myself around the kitchen. This was fun. I liked floating around. My father was panicking, pacing around the room, and trying to get me down again.

This time the heaviness settled on more suddenly, and the quick fall from the ceiling to the floor was enough to send me spiraling into blackness.
