A Date Gone Wrong
"You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye and I got that red lip classic thing that you like and when we go crashing down, we come back every time. 'Cause we never go out of style. We never go out of style!" I sang loudly into my hair brush while stepping out of the shower, a towel wrapped tightly around me. The music was thumping loudly through the speakers Leo hooked up in my bathroom; he was so thoughtful like that. I still couldn't believe that I, (y/n) (y/l/n), was getting ready to go on a date with him.
I ran my "microphone" also known as my hair brush through my wet, knotted hair, excitement bubbling up inside of me. Leo and I were actually going on a real date outside of camp, and I could not wait. As I slipped into my sweats, Reagan, my sister, was standing outside the bathroom, tapping on the doorframe impatiently with her fingernail.
"(Y/n)!" She said in a whiny, tired voice, "You know, some of us would also like to bathe in warm water! Can you hurry up in there?"
"Sorry," I replied, wincing at my reflection in the mirror. I had a long way to go before looking nice enough to go out in public with Leo. "I'm just...uhm...getting ready for my....uh...date," I bit my lip and smiled, blushing a little bit.
"Date?!" Reagan's fangirl mode instantly switched on, "With who?"
"Leo," I replied with a little giggle.
"(Y/n), let me in right now. I thought I heard you say you were going on a date with Leo Valdez. I must be going crazy or maybe I didn't hear you right-"
I opened the bathroom door and pulled her in mid-sentence, slamming it shut behind me, "Shhh!" I squealed, "I don't think that Hades heard you all the way down in the Underworld!"
Reagan just laughed, "So it is true? You and Leo?"
The pink blush that appeared on my cheeks at the mention of Leo's name answered her question for me.
"Well we can't send you off on a date looking like that!" Reagan cried and I shot her my best 'gee thanks' look, "Oh, you know what I mean, come on!" And with that, Reagan rushed me off, to my dismay, to the Aphrodite cabin.
--Time Skip--
"OW!" I screamed, pulling away from a perky blonde haired girl who was plucking my eyebrows.
"Oh, sweetie, beauty hurts," she said, looking at me like I was a little kid who didn't understand something simple while Reagan was standing in the corner, trying very hard not to double over in laughter. I would get her back later.
The pretty blonde haired girl went back to my eyebrows. No one would let me look at my reflection until they were completely done with their little "project" as they called it. I was so anxious; I wanted to look good for my first real date with Leo.
"Done!" she said, looking very proud of herself. "Now...." she guided me over to the mirror.
"Oh. My. Gods. (Y/n), you look ADORABLE!" You're Aphrodite friend sang as she stared at my reflection. I don't think adorable was the right word to describe the girl staring back at me in the mirror. I think beautiful was. Now, I really don't call myself "beautiful" a lot, but, for once in my life, I truly believed that I looked beautiful. The only downside was, I could hardly recognize myself, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
My hair, which before was wet and knotted, was now beautifully (and painstakingly) done, resembling a waterfall of curls spilling over my shoulders. Make-up was immediately plastered all over my face, but it wasn't overdone so badly that I looked like a Barbie doll. Eye shadow, blush, foundation, the whole enchilada was caked on, causing my face to look totally clear of any break outs, my eyelashes long and beautiful, and my lips a shimmering cherry color. Moving on from my face, I looked down at the outfit one of the girls had lent me ("If you get anything on this outfit, the gods of Olympus as my witness, I will gut you and send you to Tartarus,"). I looked down my body and up it again, very surprised that I could pull off a dress like this. It was a very cute dress, a blue one covered in lace with lace sleeves and a little belt around my waist to make me appear curvier. I couldn't believe how it looked and I really couldn't believe how it made me feel. I know it's silly, but I felt like I could do anything while wearing this dress. It made a smile appear on my face, knowing deep down in my heart that I looked good. And finally, to top the outfit off, the cutest pair of little black heels. I felt perfect, unstoppable. This date was going to be amazing.
"(Y/n)! He's here!" squealed one of the Aphrodite girls. Reagan must have told him were I was, so I was shoved off toward the door by the pretty blonde girl, a huge, dorky smile stretching across my face.
Leo was sitting on one of the many couches in the cabin, pillows thrown on the floor just to make room for him. I giggled a little as Leo's mouth dropped open, "(Y/n).....you.....you look....wow...," he stuttered. My already plastered-on smile grew about ten time larger as he gaped at his now totally hot girlfriend. A warm blush spread throughout my face and Leo must have realized he was staring, because he immediately turned his head away and cleared his throat, "You ready, m'lady?" he asked me, sticking out his arm.
I hooked my arm with his, "Always."
As we were about to walk out, a loud clap of thunder rang throughout the camp, the girls screamed and the guys tried to act tough, even though they screamed along with the girls at first.
My heart sinks in my chest as I look up at Leo, worry evident in my eyes, "It isn't raining, is it?"
Leo's smile instantly faded, his eyes suddenly sorrowful, "I'm sorry, (y/n). It started raining while I was walking down here....But, hey, the magical boundaries won't let the rain in the camp! We can still have our date,"
I knew Leo was trying to make me feel better, but I didn't want a date inside the camp boundaries where we would be pestered by friends and monsters; I wanted to go out to a restaurant and then to the movies, like a normal couple would. I wanted a day where I wouldn't have to worry about Percy barging in on us or the dinner horn ruining our sweet moments. For once, I just wanted things to be normal for a little while.
"No, sweetie, it's fine. I'm gonna go change out of this dress...," The dejection in my voice made Leo's hopeful smile vanish, and my heart broke a little. I knew that he was just as excited about this as I was, and my heart yearned for a some time alone with Leo, but I was getting tired of the interruptions. There was always something important that couldn't wait until later....
I sulked into the bathroom and slowly changed into my camp tee and my grey sweatpants, not even bothering to remove my make-up. I already felt bad on the inside, I didn't want to look bad on the outside.
I trudged over and returned the dress, my eyes fixated on Leo. I could tell just by the look in his eye and the way he was absentmindedly messing with his tool belt that he was hatching up an idea in that hot headed little brain of his, and I was instantly intrigued. A sly smile spread across his face, confirming my thought. Leo suddenly grabbed my hand, a broad smile plastered on his face, said hurriedly, "(Y/n) and I have to go, bye," and rushed out the door, dragging me behind him.
"Leo, what has gotten into you?" I laughed, silently hoping whatever he had cooked up in that little mind of his was going to be fun and cheer me up.
Leo just said nothing, running towards Bunker 9 as the rain poured heavily down on us; the Demeter kids must have persuaded Mr. D to let the rain in so their plants could be watered. As Leo pulled me behind him, trying to get to shelter as quickly as possible, I jumped, coming to an abrupt stop and purposefully splashing Leo with a puddle of water on the ground. I giggled as he looked at me, his curly hair matted down by the heavy rain. I kicked, splashing Leo again, only this time successfully getting more rainwater on his pants than last time.
Leo looked down at his now soaked pants, his mouth open, an unreadable look on his face. My smile faltered and for a second I feared he was mad at me. "(Y/n)," he said plainly, a little edge to his voice.
Crap.
"You're so going down for that!" Leo said playfully, grinning from ear to ear. He then threw himself towards me, trying to tackle me so unexpectedly I couldn't help but squeal. I ran off towards the woods as he fell face-first into the fresh mud. Still smiling, he got back up and ran after me.
"Hey, (Y/n)," he yelled after me, "wanna kiss?" He puckered his muddy lips and made kissy noises while I laughed, running way faster.
"Ew, no!" I squealed while he swiped at me, a smile playing on his muddy lips.
I grabbed a tree trunk, spinning and running in the opposite direction, successfully dodging a mud-covered Leo. He slipped from the sudden attempt to stop and turn around, flinging mud up into the air.....and all over him. I laughed at him hysterically, giving Leo yet another reason to chase me, and took off toward the bunker. Sadly, because of my escape attempt, I wasn't looking at the wooded floor beneath me, and I tripped on a tree root.
Leo saw his chance to win and took it immediately. He jumped on top of my squirming body, grinning evilly.
"You're mine, (l/n)," he said in a shrill voice, horribly impersonating a witch. I laughed as he gave me a not-so-wicked stare, trying and failing to look scary.
"You don't scare me, Valdez," I said in between my fits of giggles. "If anything, I find your dorkiness quite cute."
"Oh really?" was Leo's reply as he shifted his position so I was locked in between his legs. Then he raise his hands from my arms and started wiggling his fingers with an villainous glean in his eye.
I immediately realized what he was about to do and started squirming like a fish out of water, yelling, "Don't you dare, Valdez! Leo, I'm warning you, don't do it! Stop!" His fingers crept closer to my neck and I instinctively brought my chin to my chest and raised my shoulders, bracing myself.
"Am I scaring you....NOW?!" Leo then began tickling me while I laughed uncontrollably, squirming and screaming at Leo to stop in between breathes. I tried wriggling myself out from underneath him, but his knees were clamped to my sides, making it impossible to slide myself free. Leo knew that tickling was my one weakness and he was abusing my vulnerability as much as he possibly could.
"Leo!" I gasped as he tickled my sides, that malicious grin still stretching across his face. "Leo, stop!" I begged, my laughter bringing tears to my eyes.
"NEVAH!" he cried out and tickled me some more. "Not until you admit that I won."
I gasped in mock surprise, "Never!" I exclaimed, "I am the master and I demand you to stop tickling me!"
"What was that?" Leo asked, bring a hand to his ear and cupping it like he couldn't understand me, "Did....did you say 'keep tickling me'? Well, I was going to stop, but if you insist..."
"NO!" I shrieked as he attacked me with tickles. The evil smile on Leo's face grew bigger, for he knew that I didn't have a plan of escape, and I was close to cracking. I had no other option; the tickling was wearing me down, and it was getting to a point where I couldn't bear it any longer. I was getting ready to surrender, to let him win the war, when an idea popped into my mind that was so brilliant, I could've sworn Albert Einstein put it in there himself. In between laughs, I scooped up a big pile of mud, and threw it at Leo's head, hitting him right in the kisser!
Leo was so caught of guard that he faltered, giving me the change to escape, which I took gratefully. I slithered out from underneath Leo, covering my backside in mud while he tried to fathom exactly what had happened. Once he realized what I did, however, I was already free and sprinting away from him, laughing my head off.
Sadly, he almost instantly caught up with and captured me by wrapping his arms around my body and lifting me off the ground so I couldn't run away.
"You know, (y/n)," he whispered in my ear, sending a chill down my spine. His breathe was surprisingly warm and, even though he was probably going to tickle me some more, somehow gave me a sense of safety and comfort. "I never did get that kiss I asked for earlier."
A devilish grin played on his mud-covered lips as I squealed, fidgeting, squirming, and doing anything possible to get out of Leo's grasp. He raised one eyebrow at me like 'really, you think you can escape this time?' and he suddenly started kissing all over my face, attacking me with his muddy kisses while I shrieked, squirmed, and laughed.
"Okay!" I yelped, causing Leo to pull away from my face, now smothered with mud, "You....." I gulped, acting as if this was a really hard thing for me to say, "you win...."
Leo smiled excitedly and cheered, "YES! I AM THE MASTER! BOW DOWN TO ME, PEASANTS!" and then started jumping up and down with me in his arms.
"Leo," I choked, "you're suffocating me,"
Leo, to my surprise, let go of me, causing me to land in a GIANT puddle of mud. He howled with laughter while I smiled up at him, shaking my head. "You're an idiot." I said, my white smile contrasting the dark mud on my face.
"I love you, too, (y/n)."
It was at that moment that I realized....I had just had a the more fun with my boyfriend right then than I probably would have had watching a stupid movie with him. Sure, maybe I wanted a "normal" date with my boyfriend, but I was demigod. Deep, deep down inside, I knew that my life would never be perfect or normal. I knew that I could never be normal, and somehow, I was okay with that. At that moment I realized that, even if this was a "date gone wrong", in my opinion, it was a date gone wrong...that went right again. I realize now that life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass....it's about learning to dance in the rain....
