thirty eight.
The room was filled with tired people. They were all invested in the case, but Jay Halstead was obviously invested more. Pru sat around the crime board with Adam, Hank, Hailey and Jay. The case had stretched into a third day with only a little bit of info on Daniel. Carlos still wasn't cooperating and soon they wouldn't be able to hold him for any longer. And they were all working their asSes off to get this case closed. Daniel was on the run and hiding at the very moment. But Jay, he hadn't rested still. He had stayed up all night again which had only further concerned Pru. Jay was more determined then ever to get his father justice. What really worried Pru was the look that he held in his eyes. It was the look like he wasn't going to let anything or anyone stop him from catching Daniel. Jay had lost his father and was now hellbent on solving the case even if he had to get ahead of everyone else. He didn't seem to care in the moment if it all ended up killing him. And the blonde girl couldn't take another death. None of the unit could take one right now.
"Juan Mendoza. He's 28 years old. He's Carlos' other son. He's got no connection to the cartel. He's married. Got three kids. He's got a good job downtown. We pick him up, he's our access point to Carlos." Jay presented his idea to Voight, Ruzek, and the Upton sisters as he stood in front of the board.
"We ran Juan. We got nothing on him." Adam told Jay.
"They don't know that. Contrary to public opinion, fathers have favorites. If we squeeze Juan, Carlos rolls on Daniel." Jay responded.
"Jay, that's too risky." Pru spoke up.
"Yeah. We get Juan involved, then he's actually involved. The cartel starts gunning for him too." Hailey added.
"Yeah, man. That ain't right. There's gotta be a better way to do this." Adam agreed with the sisters.
"Like what?" Jay questioned as they all got quiet.
"Exactly. We're at a dead end, right? I don't even know why we're debating this." Jay said as he leaned on his desk.
"Because this could put a target on an innocent man's life, Jay." Pru told him.
"Five other innocent people died because of this guy's not-so-innocent brother and father. So I'm sorry if my heart doesn't bleed like yours." Jay snapped.
"Excuse me?" Pru let out as she looked at Jay, taking a challenging step towards him. Hailey pulled Pru back as Voight butted in.
"Okay. That's enough. It's what we have so it's what we will use. Bring him in." Voight instructed as he walked away. Pru didn't take her eyes off of Jay as she continued to glare at him. The man standing there wasn't the one she knew. She yanked her arm away from Hailey.
"I'm staying here with, Toni." Pru muttered before she walked away.

Once Juan was picked up. He was put into an interrogation room where Voight and Antonio took over. Soon enough they had gotten Carlos to cooperate in order for Juan to be released. Hailey, Jay, Antonio, Voight, and Pru stood around the bullpen to go over everything. Pru had still yet to talk to Jay again. Trying to avoid him and any conversing with him after the issue from the morning. She didn't want to be in his path when he tried to destroy everything in his way. So she had kept her distance unless they needed to all regroup for the case.
"So Carlos and Daniel have a shared disposable email account that Carlos set up for hazards of the job." Jay told them.
"Yeah, they only communicate through the drafts so nothing ever leaves the server. We can't ping them at all." Antonio added.
"Alright, but Carlos reached out. He told Daniel that he wasn't safe. He was gonna help him get out of Chicago. Daniel agreed to keep his phone on." Jay said.
"4:00pm today. Daniel's gonna keep his phone off until then." Antonio also told.
"Alright, well, you're with Carlos. He makes the call and you ping Daniel's location." Voight began to instruct Antonio.
"Rest of us, we're gonna set up a citywide grid. Okay? Get everyone on board. We're gonna be in teams of two. As soon as Antonio calls with a location, we move in quick, steady, silent. Lets go." Voight instructed before they all dispersed.

Pru exited Hank's vehicle as the two joined Jay and Hailey in an empty lot. Pru locked eyes with Jay for a moment before she diverted her eyes down to the pavement. Her radio made some static before she turned the dial.
"We're in position. West side, 33rd and Normal." Kim informed them over the two-way.
"Alright. Copy that. Just below the North side." Adam said.
"Alright, as soon as we get the location, teams move out. You get there first, you hit it." Voight told them before directing his next words to Antonio.
"Antonio how are you doing with everything on your end?" Voight asked.
"We're good to go. Wire's up. Two minutes out. Be ready." Antonio said. Jay began to make his way back to the truck when Voight stopped him.
"Jay, you're not coming." Voight told him as Pru looked between the two men before her eyes landed on Hailey. Her sister shifted her weight from one side to the other. It dawning on her that Hailey said something to Voight.
"What?" Jay asked confused.
"Give Hailey your keys and two-way." Hank instructed him.
"You got to be kidding me?" Jay let out.
"It's for the best, Jay. Keys and the two-way." Voight said before heading towards the car.
"You're too close to the case." Hailey spoke up.
"The hell does that mean?" Jay questioned.
"He's your dad." Pru responded.
"Did you say anything?" Jay asked Pru.
"No. She didn't say anything. I did." Hailey told Jay.
"You don't know anything about my dad." Jay yelled.
"I'm not pretending to." Hailey said calmly.
"No, you're just projecting whatever daddy-daughter crap got you both screwed up." Jay spat as Pru slapped him across the face. Silence fell upon them as Pru glared at Jay.
"I'm tired of you using all of us as your personal punching bags. Give me your keys." Pru snapped as she held her hand out. The key chain jingled as they dropped into her hands.
"Two-way." Pru added as he dropped it into her other hand. She then handed the two items to Hailey who then walked off to the truck.
"You figure your shït out." Pru told him.
"I don't have anything to figure out because I have nothing left." Jay said.
"You have nothing? You have people who love you and care about you. They are here. You have me. I'm here! You got to figure out your shït, Jay. Because this version of you does not work for any of us. Do you understand what I'm saying? If you don't get it together, Jay, I promise, you will have nothing." Pru laid it all out for him before she walked away from him. Making her way back to Voight's car.
+
Hank and Pru rushed out of the vehicle. Flashing blue lights surrounded the car park tunnel. Voight quickly made his way over to Jay who sat in the ambulance as Pru walked over to Hailey.
"Hails. How are you doing?" Pru let out before she hugged her sister.
"Besides seeing my partner on the ground bleeding, I'm doing okay." Hailey responded.
"How is he?" Pru asked as she peered over at Jay as Voight was talking to him.
"Why don't you check on him?" Hailey suggested.
"I don't think that's the best idea right now." Pru admitted.
"You alright?" Voight asked Jay as he stood in front of him.
"Yeah." Jay replied.
"Damn lucky." Voight let out.
"I—."
"No. You are done talking. I mean done. You should be dead. Do you get that? When we got the call, we thought the worst. You scared us. You don't disobey a direct order from me. I don't care how angry you are. You're mourning, grieving- man, I don't care if your whole damn family just got murdered. You listen to me! It's my job to keep you alive, to look out for you. I will always do my job, and you will always do yours and listen. That's the deal. We just put one of our own to rest. We wouldn't have just lost you, we would have lost her too. When your head is on straight... we are going to talk about this again." Voight told Jay.
"Okay." Jay agreed before Voight walked away. His eyes soon fell onto the two Upton sisters who stood a distance away. Hailey made her way over to him as Pru stayed in her spot. Scanning over the damage he had caused on himself. The girl sucked in a breath as she turned around to walk away. A quiet sob escaped passed her lips as she clasped her hand over her mouth.
"Hey." Adam cooed as he pulled the girl into his arms.
"I thought he was dead." Pru cried.
"I know. I did too." Adam said as he rubbed her back. Hailey soon came over as she rubbed her eyes.
"You too? Come here." He beckoned her over before he hugged the two sisters.
"Hey, you both want to get out of here and get some drinks." Adam asked.
"I'm in." Hailey said.
"I kind of want to go home." Pru sniffled.
"Okay. We will drop you off at the station." Adam said with a nod.
