Chapter Two

It was nearly a month after the bookstore incident, and Virgil still couldn't shake the memory from his mind. It was easier when his father was a distant memory. Now that he had seen him, all of the old wounds had been reopened. He felt like a six year old again, begging for his dad to come back to him. It hurt more than he remembered, and he hated Logan for making him feel this way.

It was one particular Saturday morning when Virgil woke up and realized his phone wasn't on his bedside table anymore. He looked around frantically, searching his room before realizing it wasn't there. His heart was pounding as he left his room, making his way to the living room. Upon arriving, his stomach dropped. There was his mom on the couch, scrolling through his phone with an expression that could only be described as furious. "Virgil, what is this?" she asked angrily as she turned the phone toward him. His tumblr page was pulled up, and he knew that it was over for him. He was gay, but he hadn't told his mom. She had made one too many insensitive comments about the LGBTQIA community, so he had kept that information confined to his tumblr friends. Until now, apparently.

Virgil was at a loss for words. He didn't know what to say. "You're one of those gay freaks?" his mom asked, making his chest hurt. "I-" he started, unable to continue. "That is absolutely disgusting. How could you?" she asked. Virgil's breathing quickened, leaving him voiceless. "Answer me, damn it. You're one of those worthless queers?" she demanded. Virgil's throat tightened. "Um, yeah, I-I'm, um, gay," he finally managed out. He stared at his mom nervously, anxiously awaiting what he assumed would be a huge fight. What he hadn't expected was for him mom to speak in a scarily calm and even tone.

"Get out of my house. You have 15 minutes to grab your things and then you better be gone, or I will throw you out myself."

Virgil looked at her in shock. Where would he go? He didn't have any friends or other family members. His mom had practically isolated him after Logan left. Virgil's instincts eventually kicked in and he ran to his room, throwing as many necessities as he could into his backpack. He only had a couple of clothes and necessities, but he did not want to reach the time limit. He slipped on his hoodie and got dressed as quickly as he could, soon grabbing his backpack and bolting out of the front door. Once he was outside, he slowed his pace a little. He walked aimlessly for nearly an hour before showing up at a park. He would never admit that he had silently cried the entire time.

Virgil sat down on a park bench, throwing his bag on the ground before letting his head fall into his hands. What was he supposed to do? He had no money, no place to stay, no food, nothing. He felt his breathing speed up as the realization hit. There was no way he was going to make it. He was going to die out here.

Unbeknownst to Virgil, someone very familiar was across that park. Logan was watching his husband play with his son as he sat back on a bench. As he watched Patton run around, Logan's eyes locked on the hunched over boy across the park. As he stared at him, Logan's breath caught in his throat. That was Virgil, he was sure of it. Despite his reservations, Logan stood from his spot and made his way over to the boy. He didn't know what drove him forward, but before he knew it, he was standing a couple feet away from his son.

"Virgil?" Logan asked carefully, trying his best not to scare him. Virgil looked up quickly, a flash of anger showing on his face before his expression hardened. He wiped his tears away quickly before folding his arms across his chest. "What do you want?" he asked, the coldness in his voice even surprising himself. "I, well, are you alright?" Logan asked, feeling stupid the minute he said it. He hadn't seen his son for 11 years and the best he could come up with was asking if he was okay? Virgil scoffed. "I'm fine," he grumbled. Logan was at a loss for words. He obviously wasn't fine, but he didn't feel like anything he could say would be satisfactory. "Dude, can you leave me alone?" Virgil finally said. Logan came to his senses. "Oh, yes, of course. I'm sorry. I just saw that you were upset and wanted to see if I could be of any assistance," Logan explained. Virgil analyzed Logan's face for a moment, looking for any sign of deceit. When he didn't find anything but genuine concern, Virgil let his guard down slightly. Only slightly.

"I'm just dealing with something right now," Virgil finally muttered. "May I ask what that is? I know I have no right to ask, but if you needed to vent I am more than happy to listen," Logan offered. Virgil stared at him for a moment longer before deciding that he had nothing to lose. Logan was probably going to forget about him again the second this conversation ended, so Virgil let the truth spill out. "Got kicked out," he said softly. Logan felt his heart break. "What? Your mother kicked you out of the house?" Logan asked worriedly. Virgil nodded, staring at his shoes. "I just don't know what to do, man."

Logan didn't hesitate before saying, "You're welcome to come stay at my house tonight if you require shelter." Virgil looked at him incredulously. "Yeah, no thanks." Logan pressed on, his worry getting the better of him. "I mean it, Virgil. We have a spare bedroom you could use. We have food and anything else you could possibly need." Virgil thought about it, staying silent. Of course, the shelter and food would be really nice. It would keep Virgil off the streets for at least another night. But then again, this was the man that had abandoned him and left him behind. Virgil didn't really want his help. As he thought through his options, he felt a single water droplet on his nose. Fuck.

"Virgil, I know that you most likely hate me and do not trust me, but I would feel much better knowing you were safe in our house than out here in the storm. I will not say a word to you if you wish, anything to help keep you safe." Virgil didn't know what to think. He hated Logan. He really did. But the concern in his voice mixed with the longing for a place to stay made Virgil say something that he had never imagined he would.

"Okay."
