Chapter Four
Once lunch was cleaned up and Patton was put down for his nap, Logan decided to try to talk to Virgil. He knew he may never get another chance to, and he wasn't going to waste it. He made his way to the room where Virgil was staying, taking a calming breath before knocking on the door. The door swung open to reveal a confused looking Virgil. "Can I help you?" he asked, his voice gruff. Logan nodded. "I just wanted to come talk with you. Only if that's alright, of course," Logan explained. Virgil stared at him for a long while, and Logan was sure he was about to have the door slammed in his face. He was shocked when Virgil nodded, allowing the man into the room. Logan stood awkwardly in the middle of the room as Virgil sat on the edge of the bed. "What do you want to talk about?" Virgil asked after a while. Logan swallowed harshly. "Right. I just wanted to apologize. For everything."
He hadn't expected the bitter laugh that Virgil let out. "You're sorry. You left me alone for 11 years, and the best you can do is say you're sorry. I hate to break it to you, but that doesn't change anything," Virgil said harshly. Logan looked down sadly. "I know that. But I needed you to know. And Im sorry that I haven't reached out, I-" he was interrupted by Virgil's biting voice. "Save it. I know the drill, you wanted to reach out but you have a million excuses as to why you didn't. Let's just face facts. You left and didn't look back once." Logan looked at him in slight confusion. "No, Virgil, I-" he was once again cut off. "I really don't want to hear it. Nothing is going to change that you abandoned me." "No, Virgil, I tried to contact you hundreds of times." Virgil looked at him in shock. "No, you're lying," he managed out through his teeth. "I assure you, I am not. I was going to say that I am sorry that I haven't reached out, but I didn't think you would want to hear from me since you never responded to any of my letters," Logan said, absolutely hating the look of heartbroken confusion on Virgil's face. "You...wrote to me?" he finally whispered. Logan nodded. "I wrote letters to you nearly every day after I moved out. I gave them to your mother. Didn't you get any of them?" Logan asked. Virgil looked down at his shoes before shaking his head. Logan pieced together what had happened, and his heart completely shattered. "Virgil, I need you to know, I never wanted to leave you," he said genuinely. Virgil looked up at him with a pained expression. "Then why did you?" he spit out. Logan's expression became somber. "I didn't have a choice. Your mother kicked me out." Virgil looked at him with wide eyes. "What? Why would she do that?" he asked desperately. Logan hesitated. "Because I told her I was gay. I knew that our relationship would not continue and I would more than likely move out eventually, but I wanted more than anything to be present in your life. She never allowed me near you after that," he explained. Virgil processed the information, a few stray tears leaking down his cheeks. "What the fuck," he whispered under his breath. "I understand if you do not believe me," Logan added after a moment. Virgil shook his head. "No, I believe you. She kicked me out for the same reason," he admitted softly. Logan thought his heart couldn't break any more, but he stood corrected. "No, Virgil," Logan said sadly. Virgil just sniffled and nodded. "I'm so sorry," Logan whispered. Virgil rubbed his eyes harshly. "No, I'm sorry. I've been a huge asshole since I got here, and you didn't even do anything wrong. I just thought..." he trailed off. "I completely understand. It is nothing to apologize for," Logan assured.
The two sat in a tense silence, both processing all of the new information they just learned. Logan was jolted from his thoughts when Virgil let out a frustrated scream. "Virgil?" Logan asked in concern. "How could she do that, man? She let me think that you hated me. I mean, she literally told me that you didn't want me. This whole time I could've had a dad, and she took that away from me. That is so messed up," he yelled, harsh sobs wracking his thin frame. Logan kneeled down in front of Virgil, pulling him tightly against his chest. He half expected Virgil to push him off or yell at him to leave. He was relieved with Virgil hugged back just as tightly, burying his face in Logan's chest. "I'm here, Virgil. I'm not going anywhere," Logan assured softly. "I missed you so much," Virgil managed out through his tears. "I missed you too. More than you could ever know," Logan responded as he held the back of Virgil's head to pull the boy even closer.
Finally, the pair pulled away, both of them wiping away their tears. "I can't believe this," Virgil finally mumbled. "Me neither," Logan responded. The pair sat in silence for a moment before Logan continued. "You know, you are more than welcome to stay here for as long as you want." Virgil looked at him for a moment before shaking his head. "No, I can't. Believe me, I'd love to. But I can't intrude on your family," Virgil explained. Logan looked at him sadly. "Virgil, you're my family too. You're my son, I will always be here to take care of you when you need it." Virgil sniffled. "Okay," he finally responded. "Okay?" Logan asked, a small grin tugging at his lips. "Yeah, okay. I'll stick around for a little bit. Just until I can find another place to stay, alright?" the boy responded. Logan nodded. "Understood."
A silence fell over the room, neither person sure of what to say. Logan looked at his son, really registering that he was here in front of him. He couldn't describe the feeling in his chest, but it was undeniably present. As Logan moved to leave the room, he paused for a moment. "I'm really happy you're here," he said softly. Virgil looked up with a small smile, his tears finally drying against his skin.
"Yeah, me too."
