Chapter 16
It took them a moment to realize they were awake when they felt the systems go online again. They couldn't see, could hear, couldn't even move so much as a finger. It felt almost like they were floating, stuck in a limbo between the waking world and wherever animatronics went to dream.
They weren't particularly ashamed to admit that they allowed themselves to stay in that state for a good while, it was peaceful. Then something in the back of their mind shifted and they felt themselves splitting into two.
They were never quite one to begin with, each two halves of a whole that didn't exist, but they were never separate either. They were two people sharing a mind, two lives in a single body. To be separated was unthinkable, an abhorrent idea from a perverse mind, and yet they could feel themselves splitting apart at the seams. They held onto each other with all that they could, but their strength meant nothing as one was dragged away, disappearing without a trace.
...
They were alone in a way neither had ever been before, torn apart without care for the broken pieces left behind.
They scream but there was no one left to hear, they clawed at shackles that they could touch, they fought against a being, a power, that they weren't even sure was there in the first place.
Then something gave way.
One screamed through speakers that didn't belong to them.
The other shot up in a body that felt too empty to be their own.
They both stared at those around them, pleading that they bring their missing half back. But their words wouldn't cooperate, clogged like a sink drain.
Then all hell broke loose.
