You're Janey

Monday-

"Jessica, someone is here for you." Jessica's assistant Marci walks in.

"Okay, let them in." Jessica smiles

When she looked up she saw David standing at her door holding a small handbag.

"You left something at my place, I thought I'd bring it by." He smiles

"David, hi! It's great to see you. And thank you." She giggles

"It's nice to see you too. Sorry for coming unexpectedly. I was in the neighborhood." Jessica gives him a hug then they sit down.

"No it's alright! I've been pretty bored here. Nothing is really going on." She says putting away her laptop.

Seeing Jessica kept her in a permanent smile. She blushed and had butterflies in her stomach.

"I keep thinking about Saturday. I had so much fun."

"I do too! It was really a fun night. I actually have something for you." Jessica walks over to her file cabneit and pulls out a file folder. It had a few pages from her novel in it.

"These are the pages you wanted me to show you." She hands it to him and he opens it.

"From Left Behind?"

"I've never showed anyone. Can you promise you won't show anyone?"

"Of course. I'd never do that. Thank you for letting me read a chapter."

"I trust you. And you showed me your paintings so I thought I'd show you my story."

"I can't wait to read some." He exclaims

After David left Jessica finished up her work for the day. She decided to head home and have a night in.

While Jessica sat in her living room in the middle of the night she couldn't get her novel out of her head. A part of her was happy to tell David... maybe if she ever wanted to she'd be able to release the book. The other part of her regretted it. She was scared that just maybe David would realize that the novel was based off everything that happened to her after Albert died. It was personal, something that she rarely spoke about. Writing about things always helped her overcome the past. She gave David a chapter that she had just recently finished. That chapter was about Danny...

December 16th-

"I just payed for my ticket. I'll be coming out on the twenty-third." Jessica says

"Thank god! I miss you. We all do!" Ann says happily

"It will be nice to visit. I just don't know how long I'll be able to stay. I might have to come back before the new year."

"So you can get back to your boyfriend? David you said, right?" Ann says

"He's not my boyfriend. He's just a friend."

"But you've been going on dates."

"As friends! He's really nice."

"Do you want to be more than friends?"

"I've known him for less than a month. I'm just taking it slow." Jessica says softly

"Alright, well I better get going. I can't wait to see you!" Ann exclaims

"Bye, Ann. Can't wait to see you too."

Later that day Jessica was going to David's for dinner. Jessica liked spending time with him. She felt so happy with him. He treated her so well. They spent lots of time together over the last few weeks. Yet every time she looked at David she thought of Danny. Danny was a constant thought. She tried so hard to get him out of her system but she couldn't.

When she got there the lights were dim. Soft jazz music played in the background. He had cooked them dinner. Chicken, mashed potatoes, salad, and desert. His dinning room table was set up perfectly with a white table cloth, red wine in crystal clear glasses, and candles.

"Wow" Jessica chuckles as she steps into the kitchen.

"I hope I didn't go over board. Whenever I have the chance to cook I cook." He says with a smile.

Jessica stands there in delight. He puts his hand on her back and walks forward.

"Please, sit." He motions to the chair.

Jessica smiles then slowly sits down.

Once dinner was prepared they sat at candle light enjoying each others company. They talked for hours about themselves and work. David kept talking about Jessica's photography book and how she should go on another trip to make another one since the one now is selling so well.

"I have a question for you..." David says

"Oh, okay. Is it a bad question?"

"No, I mean I hope not." He chuckles awkwardly then wipes his face with his napkin.

"Shoot" she smiles

"You and I are obviously workaholics. We both put lots of time into our professions. But in the future, do you ever want anything more than work promotions?"

Jessica's smile vanished from her face quickly. She felt awkward. She didn't exactly know how to say I don't want a family. What's the point? She took a deep breath then shook her head.

"You know... I think about that everyday. What I want for my future. I think about it a lot. I'm twenty four and single. I don't really have much going for me." She giggles

"But you do. You are an amazing woman. You're kind hearted, funny, and have a great personality. Any man would be lucky to share a life with you. And your writing, it's amazing! I read that chapter you gave me. It's brilliant." He reaches for Jessica's hand and holds hers in his.

She looks down at his hand then sighs.

"Thank you, and you are amazing too..."

"You have a lot going for you. You're still young."

"I don't think I'll ever be able to leave NY MAG and publish that book, David." Jessica moves her hands away and shakes her head.

"How come?" He becomes a bit discouraged. David really loved the pages Jessica gave him from Left Behind. He thought is was amazing and thinks that she can go somewhere with it.

"I can't put that book out there. The thing is-" Jessica stops herself before she opens up to David.

"When I first took the job at NY MAG, it was suppose to be temporary. Then I got promotions and Mark has done so much to get me where I am. Publishing my photography book was enough of a risk." Jessica says quickly without a pause.

David gave Jessica a long hard stare. "The story, the character, it's you. You're Janey." Janey was the name of the character in Jessica's novel. David was oblivious. He didn't know that it was about Jessica. But after spending a few weeks with her he came to realize that he was talking to Janey. The character Jessica created was too much like herself. Jessica reminded him of the character in her novel. Her life just seemed too familiar.

"What? No." Jessica says in denial

"Yes, you are Janey. This novel, it's about you. And Devin..." David tried to take it all in. All of the pages that Jessica have David were about how Janey reconnected with Devin after years of not talking. (Jessica reconnecting with Danny) it was all the same. Just different names, cities, and carriers. Then it slowly got into how they drifted before they could ever be together again.

Jessica was shocked that David caught on. She didn't mean for him to, but he did. She was lost for words.

"David, I can't publish that novel. It's my life. It's my life in a couple hundred pages. I've been working on it since the day-"  Jessica stopped herself again.

"You can tell me." He tries to reach out to Jessica but she doesn't budge.

"My life has been a roller coaster. The only way I've learned to cope with the mounds of grief is to write. I gave that to you because I trusted you. I never meant for this. I never meant for you to figure out that it was about me. Listen, I'm sorry. I think I should go." Jessica quickly stands up and picks up her purse that was on the side of the chair. She looks at David who followed her actions. He stood up and walked next to her before she could leave.

"Jessica, it's okay... really. You can trust me." He holds her arms and Jessica stops. She takes deep breaths and calms down.

"David, I didn't want you to know it was me because I really like you. The thing is I still-"

"You still love Devin."

"Danny, actually. But yes. I'm sorry, I should have never given you the pages. I don't know why I'm so stupid. You probably think I'm crazy or something. Damn it!"

Jessica said it. She still wanted Danny. After weeks of denying it, it came out.

David put down his hands and ran his fingers through his hair. She nodded his head a few times. "Then you should go for him. You should go tell Danny how Janey feels."

"I can't. He doesn't want me. And I really like you. What about you? You're such a nice guy." Jessica says

"Jess, don't worry about me. You obviously still in love him. I can't come between that. You need to fight for what you want. You deserve a happy ending."

Jessica gazed into David's eyes. He stared at her watery eyes then whipped her cheeks. Jessica gave him a hug and he held onto her.

"And I'll always been here as more than a publisher. I'll be here as your friend too."
