MIA

A Week Later-

Jessica was in her office editing pictures for NY Mag's November issue. Not only did she have a writing position but she did lots of photography. She loved being able to do the two things she loved, writing and photography.

As Jessica was working one of her co-workers came in.

"When I saw this book at Barnes and noble with your name on it I was about to scream. I didn't know you published a book!" Her friend Heather says holding up the book.

Jessica chuckles. "Haha, I guess I never really told anyone." She smiles

"The images in here are beautiful. I'm proud of you Jessica. This will clear the shelves for sure." She sits down and flips through it.

"I mean looking at these images, it's just amazing." she adds

"Thank you Heather. I worked hard."

"Obviously, my goodness! My mother loves Europe, i'll have to get this for her as a Christmas gift."

"I have a few copies at my house, I can bring you one if you'd like."

"I'd love that. Thank you Jessica."

"No problem!"

**

"Hey Jessica, Mark wants you in his office." Her secretary says

Jessica stops what she's doing and sighs.

"Great"

Jessica walks into his office and sees him holding up her book. Jessica took a deep breath. Make was unpredictable, she didn't know what he would say.

"Jessica Lange." He says

"That's me."

"Sit"

Jessica rolls her eyes when he's not looking and sits down. He spins his chair around and tosses the book onto his desk.

"You published a book."

"Yes" she nods

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I-"

"I actually don't want to know. You know I've bent over backwards for you. I could have just fired you from taking three months off, but I didn't."

"Mark, I'm sorry if there's a problem. I appreciate all you've done for me."

Mark starts to laugh. Jessica gives him a strange look at stares at him.

"I'm just teasing you! Haha, I'm sorry Jessica. Congrats!"

Jessica exhales and rolls her eyes. "You scared me."

"I'm sorry, I just had to. I'm happy for you Jessica. This is why I have you on our photography team, great job."

After work Jessica was exhausted. She had so much to get done and finally was able to get it done. Now she had to go to the grocery store.

Once she was finished at the store she decided to walk home. She wanted to take it all the nice weather before the cold came.

As she walked into her apartment lobby the sound of her heels echoed through the large room. The staff all greeted her as she walked in. One of the men stoped her.

"Good evening Miss. Lange." He says politely

"Hello Billy." Jessica smiles

"Someone is waiting for you, she's over there." He motions towards he lounge area.

Jessica squints her eyes and sees Sarah. She was shocked to see her. Jessica hadn't talked to her much after there 'falling out'. She didn't consider it a fight but she knew something was up with Sarah that day.

Jessica sighs and walks towards her.

Sarah looks up with tears in her eyes. "Jessica..." she says in a shaky tone

"Oh my gosh, are you okay?" Jessica says helping her up from the chair.

"I really need to talk to you." She mumbles

"Okay, let's go up to my place and sit down."

Jessica takes Sarah up to her apartment. Sarah makes her way to the couch and Jessica sets the groceries down. She gets out to wine glasses and pours red wine into both of them. She carries it over to Sarah and hands it to her.

"Wine always solves problems." Jessica grins

Sarah looks at the glass then sets it down.

"Not in this case..." Sarah utters

"What? You love red wine!" Jessica exclaims

"I can't drink it." Sarah says

It took a moment for Jessica to catch on. When she finally did she set her glass down too and looked at Sarah with wide eyes.

"You're pregnant, aren't you?" Jessica says

Sarah bites her lip and cries uncontrollably. Jessica brings Sarah close to her and hugs her.

"I don't know what to do! What will my parents say? I'm not even married! I can't be a mom yet, I'll be so bad. I'm so young and I have the store. I don't even have a good apartment."

"I know your parents Sarah, they'll be thrilled. Don't ever say you'll be a bad mother either, you'll be a great one. You shouldn't but upset, trust me it's a blessing."

Sarah wipes her tears. "You're right... I'm just so scared."

"What does Evan have to say?"

"He's ecstatic, he's over the moon, he's so happy! He's everything I'm not."

"That's good that he's happy, Sarah. You should be happy too."

"I know I should, but the fright... oh god!"

"I know it's scary, but you'll make a great mother. How far along?"

"Thirteen weeks. I've been so busy I haven't even been keeping track of my cycle. But when I started throwing up three days in a row it hit me!"

"I'm so happy for you! This is exciting. Trust me, you'll make a great mom. This baby is lucky to have you. Chin up sweetheart, you should be happy."

"Thank you... I think my nerves are getting to me. But I'll be fine, I know it. Things will be okay."

"That's right!"

The next day-

Jessica waited in her office for some kind of call or text from Danny. He had been a bit MIA. It worried Jessica, she didn't know if something was wrong or why he wasn't calling and texting. It wasn't like him. Usually he would be the first person and last person she would talk to.

Jessica laid in bed watching Scandal. She would constantly check her phone to see if Danny had called or texted.

After countless checks she finally got a call.

She quickly tapped the accept button and smiled.

"Hey stranger! How've you been?" Jessica exclaims

"Hey" he says faintly

"What's up? I haven't herd from you in a while."

"I've been busy, sorry."

Jessica could immediately tell that something wasn't right. She didn't want to ask so she tried to make conversation.

"It's fine. Great news, Sarah is having a baby. Isn't that crazy?"

"Wow, that's cool."

"Yeah...."

Jessica listened for a bit. She herd a few sniffles. She decided to ask, Danny was holding something in and on the verge of tears.

"Danny... is there something going on?"

Danny clears his throat and takes a deep breath.

"It's my dad... he was put into the hospital yesterday. He has a brain tumor." Danny chokes up a few times. It made it impossible for him to hold the tears back.

"I'm so sorry Danny. I didn't know... will he be okay?"

"There's nothing they can do... they've only given him such a short time. It's not fair Jessica! He's such a good man. How could these people put a number on such a good mans life." He yells

"I know Danny... it's horrible, your father doesn't deserve this. He's a great man, really."

Jessica herd Danny crying and it broke her heart. Danny and his father were always so close like Jessica and her father were. She understood how he felt and how angry he must be at the moment. She felt the same way when her father died of cancer. It's a horrible way to lose a family member. Jessica's heart ached for Danny. She just wanted to be there to comfort him. She was speechless in a way. She didn't know how life could change so much within only a matter of days.

Jessica stayed on the phone with Danny for a long time comforting him.

"I appreciate all the kind words, Jessica. I'm lucky to be able to talk to you."

"It's no problem Danny. My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family."

"Thank you... If I'm a bit MIA you'll know why. I just need to get all the time I can with him. I never thought that I'd only have such a short time with him. He's my best friend, you know? He's always been there."

"I do know... it isn't easy."

"Thanks again, I'll keep you updated."
