Chapter 2
(Sky's POV)
After the ceremony had finished, I was ushered quickly onto a train. This train would take me to the capital city, which is where the Hunger Games would be played.
The train conductor had shown me to my sleeping car, and after checking that I had everything I needed, he left me alone. I walked over to the bed, sat down, and sighed angrily.
"I can't believe it, I was so close to never having to worry about these stupid games, and now I'm probably going to die for them!" I yelled. Grabbing my pillow, I flung it across the train car, and it hit the sliding door with a soft thud. I put my head in my hands.
I didn't lift my head from my hands until I heard the sound of a door sliding open. Looking up, I realized that another kid that looked to be maybe 2-3 years younger than me had decided to pay me a visit.
"Uh.... Hey." The kid said shyly, holding out his hand to me. I glanced at him, and then shook his hand quickly.
"Hey yourself. What are you doing in my car? Aren't we suppose to be, like, enemies?" I asked the kid. He shrugged.
"I don't know. I just heard you yelling in here, and I thought that maybe I could help. I'm Ty by the way." He said, plastering a small smile on his face. I looked at him head to toe. He was smaller than most kids around his age, and he wore a green set of headphones on top of his emo haircut. His outfit consisted of a simple white t-shirt and tan jacket that looked a lot like mine, and gray jeans. He had black shoes with maroon laces, which matched his eye color to a tee.
"I'm Adam, but call me Sky." I said, motioning him to sit down next to me. He sat down, and looked at me. He looked at me from head to toe, and squinted his eyes.
"Um... Everything ok there?" I asked. Ty seemed to jump out of his little trance, and he shook his head.
"Sorry Sky, it's just.... You look so familiar. Are you sure we haven't met somewhere before?" He asked. Now that I looked at him again, he was right. He seemed familiar too, but I could place a name on where we could've met.
"Huh, maybe from a trading run or something." I offered, and Ty shrugged.
"Well anyways, it's nice to meet you. Even though we're gonna have to fight eachother in these games, I'm glad I got to at least meet someone. You know, while not in a fight-to-the-death mindset." He said, chuckling. I nodded.
"Well you know, what if we teamed up? It would increase our chances of survival, and we could get to know eachother better." I said suddenly. Ty looked at me, a smile on his face.
"I really like that idea Sky. As long as it's cool with you, I'll team with you." He said happily. I nodded, grinning.
"So anyways Sky, what district are you from?" Ty then asked, getting off the bed and walking over to the fridge. He pulled out 2 sodas, and tossed one of them to me. He opened his with a crisp crack, and leaned his head back to take a gulp of it. He then set it down on a nearby table, and looked at me, waiting for an answer.
"I'm from District 5." I said, cracking open my own soda can. Taking a drink, my eyes opened at the sugary sweetness of the drink. Ty giggled.
"I should've expected a reaction like that from a District 5 member. When was the last time your district won a hunger games?" He asked, and I shrugged.
"Which district are you from Ty?" I then asked, taking a drink of soda.
"Born and raised in district 8." He said proudly. I nodded.
"I'm guessing your pretty skilled with melee attacking then?" I questioned, and he nodded.
"Best in the town." He smirked.
"Well, glad I know that there's someone who's actually talented at fighting by my side." I said, and Ty nodded.
"What did you in 5 anyways Sky? Like, what type of job?" Ty then questioned. I shook my head.
"I didn't have one. Too young to apply anywhere there." I said simply. Ty cocked his head to the side, confused.
"Well, if you didn't have a job, what did you do all day?" He questioned. I shrugged.
"I would usually just sit around, either reading or hanging with other friends. I might've practiced my fighting skills once or twice, but not as often as I would've now liked." I huffed.
Ty grinned. "Well, it's your lucky day. It sounds like we have a week to prepare before the games." I sighed.
"Oh yeah, I'll definitely get good enough to survive these games in a week." I said sarcastically. Ty rolled his eyes.
"I can help you train you know." He said, offended. I sheepishly grinned.
"Oh, right."
Suddenly, a voice boomed over the intercom.
All passengers, please return to their sleeper cars for the night. A pair of blankets and pajamas will be brought to you shortly. Thank you.
Ty looked at me, and shrugged.
"Well, I guess I'll see you later then. Bye Sky." He said, waving as he stepped into his own car. Almost as soon as he left, another man walked in with my pajamas and blankets. I gave him a curt nod, but he didn't respond back, but simply left instead. Shrugging, I changed into my pajamas, and settled myself into the bed. I heard the car doors lock for the night, probably as a precautionary measure. Closing my eyes, I sighed, and drifted off into a dreamless sleep.
[9:30AM-The next day]
I woke up to the bright light of the sun shining into the car. Sitting up, I stretched my arms and yawned. The intercoms beeped, and a voice boomed from them.
Passengers; Rise and shine! We will be at the Capital City soon, so please get dressed and gather any belongings from your car. Once we arrive, you will join a member from the Hunger Games council who will talk you through the next few days leading up to the games. Thank you, and may Notch have mercy.
I sighed, and changed into my normal clothes. Since I had nothing to bring, I was ready to go in about 5 minutes. Looking at the digital clock hanging on the wall, I decided to go pay Ty a visit in his car.
Pushing open the sliding door, I was met with a shirtless Ty. He jumped a little, and then laughed.
"Oh hey Sky, you startled me." He said, grabbing his off of a chair nearby. Slipping it on over his head, he then grabbed his headphones, and then slipped them on.
"Hey, are you hungry?" Ty then asked as I sat down on a nearby chair. I nodded.
"I'm starved." He nodded, and then walked over to the small Kitchenette that was in the car. He called to the car service, and a few minutes later they came back with some waffle mix and a waffle maker. Ty thanked them, and they left. He then got out the measuring tools, and before you know it, the smell of waffles was in the air.
"Mmhmm, those smell delicious!" I said, my mouth practically watering. He chuckled.
"Cooking has always been more of a side hobby for me." He said, scrapping the waffles off of the pan and onto two plates. He carried one over to me, and I happily took it. He sat down next to me, and we began eating.
"Wow man, these are really good. Who taught you to cook?" I asked.
He shrugged. "I pretty much taught myself. Hey, what's that?" He said, pointing out the window with his fork. Turning my head, I looked outside, and saw nothing.
"I don't see anything- HEY!" I said, shocked. Ty had grabbed a piece of waffle from my plate and was happily chewing it.
"Why you-"
Then suddenly, my head started to hurt, and I started seeing these weird images. They were super blurry and a little weirdly colored, but I managed to see 2 boys talking, and one laughing. One of them, the one who was laughing, had something in his hand. And the weird thing was, the boy had something bright green on his head.
Before I was able to understand what that weird vision was, it was gone, and I was back in the train car. Ty looked at me confused.
"Uh dude? You ok?" He asked, worry etched in his voice.
"What? Oh... Yeah, I'm fine. I had just gotten a small headache is all." I lied. I couldn't tell him what I saw. Maybe I was just delusional from anxiety.
"I might have some aspirin if you want it." Ty offered, but I shook my head.
"No I'm fine. It's practically gone now." I said, and he nodded.
Passengers: Please make sure you are in your cars for head count in two minutes. We will be at the station momentarily.
Looking at Ty, I stood up, and put the plate in the sink.
"Well, gotta go. Thanks again for the pancakes Ty." I said, and he smiled.
"Of course. Cya Sky." He said, and I waved goodbye as I stepped back into my train car.
Closing the door, I sighed, and sat down on the floor.
"What the fudge was that." I whispered. Then suddenly, a large laser beam swept the car. When the beam landed on me, the beam's color changed from red to green, and it disappeared.
Freaky machines. I thought to myself.
[11:00AM]
When the train had finally reached the station, I was led off the train by the conductor and to a semi-tall lady with pink and purple hair, a tan tight-fitted shirt, brown shorts, and black tennis shoes. She had a smile on her face, and smelled faintly of Cupcakes.
"Sky, this is the Hunger Games Council Member you have been assigned to." He said, and the girl extended his hand out.
"My name is Tiffany." She said, smiling. I shook her hand. "Come on Sky, I want to show you around a little bit." She said, ushering me over into a small car.
We drove from the train station to a large building in the middle of the city. As I looked out the car's windows, I was amazed at the beauty of the the city. It's buildings were made of quartz blocks, and some stretched as high as the clouds.
"Wow..." I breathed. I heard Tiffany giggle.
"I never get tired of the reaction other district members give when they are first introduced to the city." She said happily. I blushed, embarrassed.
We pulled into a parking garage that was connected to the building, and Tiffany then led me to an elevator and hit the bottom floor button. We stood there in awkward silence.
As the doors of the elevator opened, I was hit with chilly air and the smell of mildew. I shivered as I stepped off the elevator. Tiffany looked at me, a little embarrassment escaping to her cheeks. Or maybe it was just cold.
"Sorry about the chilly air down here, but that's what happens when you build an underground training basement." She said. I looked around the room. It was huge. The floors were made out of stone bricks, and the walls were solid stone. There was an area for boxing training, as well a workout machines, an archery target practice field, and a shooting range.
"Wow..." I breathed again.
"Pretty great huh? We're gonna be training hard here for the next week, to get you prepped for the games. So, that leads me to my next question: what is your best skill?" Tiffany asked. I shrugged.
"I'm not really sure." I said dully. She clapped happily.
"Oh goody! I love helping players find what their best at! You know, I helped lots of winners, and many of them didn't know what their talent was either...." I began tuning out Tiffany as I began studying some of the other contestants here already training. There was Ty, and next to him was a boy with a weird jetpack looking thing on his back.
Over in the boxing ring were two other guys, one animal looking thing and one that had a checkerboard hoodie on. They were throwing hard punches at one another, but were laughing as well as they danced around the ring. On the workout machines were a few kids, one wearing a pair of sunglasses a lot like my own, as well as a kid with blue skin and orange gill things on the side of his face, and a kid that had a bandage over one eye. That last one worried me a bit.
Over in the archery range was another kid with a flannel on and nerd-like glasses, and a kid with a gold cape and gold headband. A kid that looked similar to him was in the gun range, but he instead wore a purple cape and had a silver headband on. Then finally talking with their council members were 3 other kids. One was wearing some unicorn-dolphin hoodie. There was also a kid there that had a purple dinosaur hoodie on, and much like the first kid, he too had something over one of his eyes, but instead of a bandage, it was an eyepatch. Then finally, there was a girl down there too, who had black hair and was wearing a purple crop top and matching shirts, as well as black knee-high converse with purple laces.
I feel bad for that girl, she doesn't have a chance. I thought to myself.
"Sky? Sky have you been listening?" Tiffany asked, and I snapped back.
"Uh, can you repeat that last part?" I questioned, and she sighed.
"Ugh, come on. We need to get to work." She grabbed my wrist, and pulled down into the room were I would spend my next week drenched in sweat and motivation.
