Chapter 11: Internships

The rest of the week flew by and before I knew it, it was Sunday night. Tomorrow I would be working with my life long idol, Edge Shot. The mysterious ninja hero who's Quirk could make him paper thin. I looked over at my phone and noticed that Kirishima had sent me a text.

Hey! You excited for tomorrow?

I subconsciously smiled when I read his text, slightly giddy just to talk to him.

Yeah! But soooooo nervous (^_^;)

Don't be, you're strong and awesome. You have nothing to worry about <3

I felt my face heat up; was that a heart?! My fingers hovered over the screen, trying to decide how to respond, when my phone began to buzz in my fingers.

"Hey," I had answered the video call to see Kirishima's sweet face. "I just wanted to see you." I blushed and turned my face away. "Why? I look terrible..."

"Shut up! I think you look really cute in that teddy bear shirt." I looked down at my shirt to see the childish cartoon plastered on my sunny yellow shirt. "Kiri, that's embarrassing..." I put my phone down and hid in my pillows. "Oh c'mon Miku! Come back!"

I tentatively picked it back up to see a pouting face. I noticed how good he looked with his bright red hair down. It was a refreshing change and I thought it made him look adorable, even though I loved the way his hair normally was too. "Kiri, your hair looks really cute that way."

"Really?" He smiled when I said this, but I could see a lingering sense of pain in his eyes. The call went silent, Kirishima obviously upset about something. "Kiri?"

"What?!" he snapped, a fierce snarl on his face. I jumped slightly at the tone of his voice and the look on his face; it wasn't natural. It wasn't the person I knew. I heard him curse under his breath, the menacing look on his face disappearing. "Miku, I'm so sorry. I just-"

"No! It's okay..." I needed to figure out what was wrong, but now wasn't the time. This was something that had to be done in person. "Are you nervous about meeting Mr. Fourth Kind?! He seems so scary..."

The usual easygoing Kirishima came back almost instantly. "Nah, I'm sure he's not so bad! And even if he was, I'm not scared." He beat his fists together with a strong grin. "I'm too manly to get scared!"

"Kiri, you're allowed to be scared. That doesn't make you any less of a man." He face clouded over again, but he obviously held everything back. "Thanks Miku..." An impending fear built up in my chest; there was something that Kirishima wasn't telling me, but I locked the thought away for later. Again, now was not the time.

We chatted for a bit longer until I had noticed the call had gone silent again. I looked over to check the screen and saw Kirishima fast asleep with his phone still in his hands. He looked so peaceful, his eyes gently closed with his red locks spilling over his face in a messy jumble. My heart squeezed a little and I giggled as I took a screenshot of the precious boy. "Cute..." I whispered. "Goodnight Eijiro..." I ended the call, using his first name only because I was too scared to use it in front of him. I set my alarm and collapsed on my bed, stupidly smiling into my pillow.

That morning was filled with hustle and bustle as we all gathered in the train station. I had my costume tightly grasped in my hands as I tried to decide where I needed to go. I was terrible with directions and there was no way I planned on being late on my first day. I had to get it right...

"Hey, you need help?" I felt a hand pull mine into theirs. "Yeah, please help me Kiri..." He looked at me, laughing slightly. "Wait are you seriously this bad with directions? Because you're looking at the wrong map..." My eyes went wide with embarrassment, and I let out a sigh. "See! I'm really bad at this kinda stuff..."

"Cute," he mumbled while reading the subway maps with a smirk. "Okay, let's go!"

"Wait, what about your train?"

"You're lucky that we'll be taking the same one. You get off a couple stops sooner than me, so I'll tell you when it's your stop." I smiled bashfully at him. "Thanks Kiri..." Before we left, I waved to all of our friends. Ochako-chan and Tsu-chan came up to me, giving hugs before leaving. "You ready?" Kirishima smiled at me and extended his hand. "Yup!" I cheerfully agreed while accepting it.

The train ride went by too fast and before I knew it, my stop was the next one. I looked over at Kirishima with sad eyes and he pulled me into a hug. "I'll call you tonight, okay?" He whispered into my hair.

"Okay..."

"Don't get too busy for me." he teased, but there was a hint of fear in his voice.

"Never." I promised, squeezing him tighter. The train stopped and I was about to rush out when I felt Kirishima hold me back for a second, long enough for him to plant a kiss on my forehead. I blushed, running out of the train and waving to him.

I struggled to find the agency, getting lost countless amounts of times. "Dang, I really suck at this don't I!" Finally, I managed to find my way without arriving late. Stealing my nerves, I pushed open the heavy doors to Edge Shot's hero agency.

The building was filled with countless amounts of sidekicks and other pros. I looked around, becoming increasingly intimidated. Still, I feigned confidence and walked up to the secretary. "Name?" she asked monotonously, glancing at me with the same amount of interest as if I were an item on a grocery list. "Miku Chiho, I'm from U.A. for the internship-"

"I just needed your name hon." She gave me an annoyed smile, then flicked her hand over to the elevator. "Go up to the top floor. Knock before you enter."

"Thank you," I kept my composure and thanked her politely. I wasn't going to let her sour attitude affect mine! I licked my lips and stepped into the elevator, despite my hatred of them. The whole ride made me even more anxious; my claustrophobia never failed to kick in whenever I found myself in a tight spot, literally.

Thankfully, the ride was soon over, passed with the help of elevator music. I walked down the long hallway, checking each of the doors for the name Edge Shot. It ended up being the last one, a silver plaque inscribed neatly with his name. I raised my hand, firmly knocking on the rich oak. "Come in." A smooth voice made a shiver run down my spine; Edge Shot was in there and waiting for me.

"Okay Chiho... Remember, confidence! He saw talent in you, that's why you're here! You can do it!"

After my internal pep talk, I opened the door, walking in with grace and poise. "Welcome Miku." Edge Shot set down the paper he was reading and watched me walk over to his desk. I couldn't tell because of his mask, but I had a feeling that he was smiling. "Hello, Edge Shot." I managed to greet him without letting my voice shake, although I was practically bursting with excitement.

"Please, sit down. I wish to speak with you." His mannerisms were suave and formal, keeping his voice soft. I sat down on one of the small couches while he walked over to sit on the one across from me. "This is much better, don't you think? That desk makes everything so formal." This time I knew he was smiling as he let out a dry laugh.

"Do you know why I picked you, Miku? Why I wanted you to come to my agency?" Edge Shot interlaced his fingers, looking at me from over them. I paused before responding, really trying to understand why he might have done something like this. A stabbing pain came from inside.

"You were a mistake! Why would I ever love you?! You're worthless, you hear me! You're nothing!"

I held back a flinch that those memories were about to bring. "Most likely, the fact that I had simply made it to the second round in the tournament probably was a large factor. Also, my Quirk could become powerful if I trained properly."

"Very good, but you missed something. The way you think is intriguing to me." Edge Shot sat back a bit. "The way I think?"

"Your strategies, Miku. You're very clever with how you use your Quirk. I was impressed that you caught on to how Dark Shadow worked and changed the weather in you favor."

"But, sir, I lost that battle... I understand that victory isn't all that matters, but it accounts for a large percentage of it." Edge Shot chuckled at my comment. "You're right, winning is very important. However, the way you handled yourself in that fight was smart. With a little training in the right areas, you will be able to increase your power exponentially." He took a pause to glance at his watch. "Speaking of which, I don't enjoy wasting time. You won't get any stronger by sitting here, talking to me. Go change into your costume Miku and meet me at the elevator."

"Yes sir!" I gave him a quirky salute before running off to change. I could hear his dry laugh as I left the room.

The whole day was spent on training. I was forced to use my Quirk to the absolute limit and beyond that, in addition to completing strenuous physical tasks. "Let's pick up the pace Cloud Nine!" Edge Shot shouted at me as I ran down a long trail, carrying multiple boulders at varying heights. He would sporadically add more, forcing me to catch them. I had already gone way above my normal weight limit and was so dizzy that my vision had doubled, but I kept going. "Keep pushing!"

I had finally reached the end of the 10 kilometer route and I set down each boulder as gently as I could. "Good job. You were surprisingly capable of running this far easily." Edge Shot walked beside me as we made our way back to the agency. "Thank you, I actual enjoy running and I do it often to help focus on breathing."

"Hmm, again, your innovativeness is remarkable. Maybe you don't need my help..." He put a finger to his chin, letting out his classic dry laugh. "This is when you're supposed to protest and tell me how great I am." Edge Shot looked at me expectantly, and this time I giggled. "Sorry, I guess I was daydreaming. I really am grateful to have the opportunity to train under someone as powerful and successful as you, sir."

"There we go!" He smiled at me, obviously enjoying having someone that would dote on him. Once we got back to the agency, he showed me to my room. "I'll let you do whatever you please during the hours from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. During the rest of that time, you answer to me. Also, I do not appreciate tardiness. Make sure you are at my door promptly at 6:00 am, alright?"

"Yes sir!" I straightened my posture with all my remaining energy. His eyes crinkled with amusement and he closed my door, leaving me in solitude. I took a much needed shower before heading out for a late dinner. I quickly decided to grab something at a small restaurant near the agency.

I ordered a rice dish with chicken and some vegetables that I hadn't bothered to read the name of. The main reason it had caught my eye was because it seemed healthy enough and it was cheap. Both good things! I sipped my cup of water while waiting for my order, sitting at the small juice bar. A young man sat next to me, ordering from off the menu while stealing glances at me.

I pretended not to notice, but I was secretly hoping that my food would hurry up and cook. "Hey, I've never seen you around before. Are you new here?" I gave him a weak smile; I was tired, hungry, lightheaded, and just wanted to see my boyfriend. So of course, instead of being able to relax with him, I had to deal with some flirty stranger while waiting for my dinner. "Yeah, just gonna be here for a little bit though."

"Aww that's too bad, maybe we could have gone out on a date." He flashed a cocky grin my way; he seemed nice enough and wasn't too bad looking either. However, next to Kirishima, he was nothing to me. "Want my number?" He began to pull out his phone, looking at me expecting a yes. Luckily my dinner came and I snatched the bag from the chef while a kind smile. "Thank you!"

I began to walk out when the boy grabbed my shoulder. "C'mon give me a chance!" He had an annoyed look on his face like a girl had never rejected him before. Well today was going to be a shock for this pretty boy. "Sorry, I'm already taken." I shook his hand off and sashayed out the door, feeling bold.

When I got back to my room, I was completely exhausted. I opened the styrofoam container, taking a sniff of the savory aromas. I wasted no time digging my chopsticks into the rice. I picked up my phone while I was eating and called Kirishima.

"Hey babe..." Kirishima immediately picked up, sounding just as tired as I was. "Did you just call me babe?" I teased him, although my cheeks were quite pink. "Oh! Sorry, I-I-I  just... Umm well... I thought you might like it, I don't know..." I laughed at his stuttering; it was a much needed light in my day. "No, I thought it was really sweet Kiri. Just wanted to hear you freak out."

"You're so mean!" He laughed a little and I could hear him fall onto what was probably his bed. "Sorry, sorry... Tell me all about your day! I want to hear about everything that happened." I listened to Kirishima explain his day while I ate my dinner. "Yeah, so basically it was really boring... I want to do something cooler and more manly! Like fight some bad guys! But instead I'm stuck doing community service..." He let out a small groan.

"Don't worry Kiri, I'm sure it'll get better!" I tried my best to sound supportive with food in my mouth. "Are... Are you eating?" He laughed a little when he said that, making my face burn slightly. "Maybe... But I wasn't released from training until late and I had to wait for dinner so!"

"Nah, I just found it funny. Speaking of which, how was your day?!" I proceeded to tell him everything in between bites, even the little part with that guy at the restaurant. "So yeah, I told him where I stood in that department." I laughed a little, remembering the look of shock on the guy's face.

"Aww, you're so sweet." Kirishima's voice was filled with an innocent happiness that he didn't bother to hide. "Thanks, but that's what any good girlfriend would do, right?"

"Damn you're great... Hey, let's go on a date soon Miku. I still haven't taken you out yet, what kind of man am I?" He groaned again, this time muffled so I assumed he was in his pillow. "A great one so be quiet..." I retorted, stifling a yawn. I rubbed my eyes, tiredness hanging on my eyelids.

"You sound sleepy Miku, cute and sleepy." I giggled softly at Kirishima's flirting techniques. "I am a little tired... Training today was tough." I let out another soft yawn and I heard him follow in suit. "Well, you sound just as tired!" We both laughed, our fatigue making us slightly ditsy.

Eventually, I fell asleep on the phone because neither one of us wanted to hang up; so when I woke up the next day, my alarm letting of it's classic ring, I could also hear Kirishima's steady breathing. I expected him to wake up at the noise, but his soft snuffles stayed the same. I hesitantly hung up the call, because after looking at the time, I realized that I had to get going.

I quickly got ready, tying my pigtails tighter than usual, because if today was anything like yesterday, they were going to need it.

We trained just as hard as yesterday, my head feeling like it was going to explode from the nausea and dizziness. The sun was beginning to set as Edge Shot let me go get some water. I went into the backroom, taking a sip from my water bottle, when he burst through the door. "Cloud Nine! We need to leave now!"

I jumped up and ran after him. "Edge Shot, if you give me the coordinates, then I can fly there!" I pulled out my phone, madly typing the numbers in while he said them. "Hurry! I will meet you there!"

I nodded in understanding before taking off. I flew through the night sky as fast as I could, zipping through clouds until my phone let out a ding; I was over the spot- Hosu City.

I dropped down, letting myself fall a good bit before slowing down as I got near the end. The street was burning and two monsters roamed around, attacking civilians. "They look like the one from the USJ! What were they called... Nomus." I shivered, my wrists slightly tingling from the memory.

"Help us!" I woman cried out as a Nomu approached her along with some others that seemed injured. "No time to think about the past!" I jumped in, launching a swift kick at one of the Nomus and summoned a gust of wind for the other. It managed to push both of them back, but only barely. They screeched at me, obviously angry that I had saved their prey.

"GO! RUN WHILE YOU CAN!" I screamed at the citizens and they ran off to safer areas. I watched each of them go, making sure that none of them were still on the street or in another dangerous area. One of the Nomus lunged at me, swiping its long claws in my face. I jumped, the razor tips barely missing my face.

The second one spit large flames at me while I was still off balance. "Cold front!" I changed the pressure and lowered the temperature so fast that blood rushed to my head, forcing me to roll of the ground rather than catch myself. However, the fire was turned to steam and water, saving me from becoming a crisp.

I reached for one of my long knives hidden away in my boots and as the one with the claws came close, I jammed the blade in its exposed brain. "Gross..." It writhed in pain, shrieking as it tried to pull the knife out. I turned to the one with fire breath, assuming that I could take this one on while the other was temporarily out of commission.

I summoned a large blast of wind, forcing it into a wall. "I bet it doesn't feel great to get smashed into walls, right?" I taunted, remembering how I was pummeled into the floor at the USJ. Still, it spit up more fire forcing me to perform acrobatics in order to save myself. I drew my other blade, ready to push this one into it's brain as well.

Before I could, though, the Nomu fell face forward with a glassy look on its face. "Ninpo: Thousand Sheet Pierce!" I saw my mentor zip out of the body, nothing more than a mere string before he gathered himself back. "Edge Shot!" I ran forward and gave him a quick hug, a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. He awkwardly blushed and patted my head. "Hey Cloud Nine..."

"All the citizens have evacuated as far as I know, so we should be able to finish off the last one easily." I turned back to see that it was on the floor, twitching slightly. I had gotten a lucky shot, paralyzing it temporarily. Edge Shot quickly transformed, stretching himself out again and flew into the Nomu. "He won't be waking up again."

"Like ever?"

"Like ever." Edge Shot said with a smile and I sighed with relief. "Good work today, Cloud Nine! I wasn't planning on doing field work until tomorrow, but this was a great training exercise. We should go check around the area and make sure that everyone is alright."

"Yes sir!" Out of habit, I reached down to check my phone, making sure that it survived the fight. I noticed a notification on my phone from a little while ago. "I must have gotten it during the fight..." Midoriya had sent his location to everyone, which made me nervous. I checked it, becoming nauseous when I realized that he was in Hosu too.

"Edge Shot, I'll be right back!" I cried out, flying off without waiting for his reply. I was probably going to be in trouble for this later, but I didn't care. I was worried about my friend.

I landed in the approximate spot, seeing a bunch of heroes gathered around a dark alley way. I saw Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki standing with them, looking rather hurt. I rushed over to them when I noticed him. It was Stain, the hero killer unconscious on the ground next to a dead Nomu.

"Guys!" I stumbled over to them, my own battle taking its toll on my body. "Miku?" Midoriya noticed me and Todoroki came over to me. "Whoa, what's this?" He grabbed my arm, pointing to a large cut that I had somehow failed to notice. "Oh... Hmm, it's fine. I don't feel anything really." I brushed it off as a minor injury, not wanting to bring much attention to myself.

"Well at least let me do this..." Todoroki grabbed the ribbons around my forearm and tied it around my shoulder tightly. I ended up letting out a small groan; that sudden pressure did not feel good at all. I stumbled a little bit, feeling dizzy as my initial adrenaline wore off. Todoroki wrapped his arm around my waist and walked me over to the ambulance. "No, I'm fine Todoroki, really..."

"Just come with us, you're going to end up hurting yourself even more if you don't." He pulled me inside, despite my wishes and I ended up going to the hospital with them.

My cut was deeper than I thought and it needed stitches, but I didn't mind. I was more relieved to see that the others were okay. Well, except Iida; he had a pretty serious hand injury, but he told us not to worry about him. I learned that they had beaten Stain in this huge alleyway fight; it sounded as though it came strait out of an anime or something. "That's crazy..." I mumbled when the policeman with the dog-head left.

"Yeah, I know right..." Midoriya whispered, rubbing his hurt leg. The door flew open and I was met with the sight of a very worried looking Edge Shot. "Oh shit... This isn't good."

"Miku." He said my name in a low voice, sending shivers down my spine. The boys suddenly became very interested in the floors, walls, and ceiling. I licked my dry lips expecting the worst; after all, I had run off to an unknown location without his consent and then ended up in a hospital. "I'm so glad that you're alright!" I was suddenly embraced by my mentor, who seemed like he was on the verge of crying.

I let out a sigh of relief and smiled at him. "Yeah I'm fine! There won't even be a scar left behind!" Edge Shot straightened up after seeing my friends. "Ah yes, well that's good news. We'll go easy on the training tomorrow, just to be on the safe side."

"Thanks boss man." I gave him a wink and he gave his classic dry laugh in return. "Just call me when you need to come back to the agency. Try not to stay here too late, okay?"

"No problem." I waved to him as he left the hospital room. "Seems like a cool guy." Todoroki commented, and we all began talking about our internships until the doctors said I could leave.

The rest of my internship was spent doing more training and hero work. On my last day, I swore I saw Edge Shot holding back some tears, but he would never admit that. But most importantly, now that this was over, I could see Kirishima again. "Wow, I'm really head-over-heels aren't I?"
