Chapter 10: Names

Over the break I had asked Kirishima if he had wanted to hang out, but his family had decided to take an importune trip as a congratulation for doing so well in the tournament. He had offered to tell his parents that he wanted to stay home, but I protested against it. After all, he had worked so hard and deserved a nice break. I was actually excited to get back to school, so I had accidentally woken up really early.

I checked my phone, rolling over in my covers to snatch it from off my nightstand. "Kiri... I want to call Kiri..." I pulled up his contact, but I hesitated. "No, I shouldn't... That'd be really selfish." Instead, I sent him a quick text.

Hey, sorry to bother you so early, but I was thinking about you... Can't wait to see you today <3

I sighed after hitting send and jumped out of bed. I took a scalding hot shower and began getting ready for the day. As I was brushing my teeth, I heard my phone chime. I finished wiping the water from my face and mouth before dashing over to grab my phone from off of my neatly made bed.

No worries, I've been thinking about you too. Is it okay if I come to get you a little earlier than usual?

My heart soared as I read the texts and feverishly texted back.

Totally! If you want, I can make you breakfast here instead of you eating at your house

Sounds perfect! Be there in 15 minutes. Can't wait to see you (^_-)

I rushed to finish fixing my hair, throwing it up into the usual pigtails, before going to the kitchen to start making breakfast. Normally breakfast for me was nothing more than a bowl of cereal and I realized how over my head I actually was in this situation. I opened the fridge and pulled out some rice, along with some eggs. I threw them into a pan and began to mix everything together.

As the eggs sizzled against the hot metal and rice, I heard a knock on the door. I turned off the heat on the stove and ran to open the door. Kirishima was standing patiently on the other side, his red hair spiky as always. He tightly embraced me, lifting my feet from off the ground. "Mmm, I missed you so much Miku..." I snuggled into his shoulder, enjoying his familiar scent of fresh water and a hint of spice. "I bet I missed you more Kiri."

"Whatever, let's eat. Your cooking smells delicious." He rubbed his hand together greedily after setting my back down. "I don't know if it'll be good but I gave it my best shot!"

I scooped servings of rice and eggs into two bowls, setting the larger one in front of Kirishima. I grabbed an orange out of a bowl on the table and peeled it. I gave each of us half and threw away the peeling. "Thanks!" Kirishima said with his mouth full. He shoveled the food into his mouth, getting rice on his face in the process."So cute..."

I reached out with my napkin and wiped away the crumbs. Kirishima's face turned bright red as I did and he gave a small chuckle. "Sorry, I'm kinda a messy eater..." He rubbed the back of his neck, obviously embarrassed but I just smiled at him. "No, it's cute..."

The words slipped out of my mouth before I realized what I was saying. It was my turn to blush and I waved my arms around wildly. "Well! I mean! Umm!" Kirishima grinned and took another bite. "You think it's cute?"

"Shut up and eat your breakfast." I turned my head so he couldn't see my flaming cheeks. After we had finished and cleaned up the dishes, Kirishima and I grabbed our stuff, heading out. It was still earlier than our normal time when we left the building so we took our time on the way.

"Did you really miss me?" Kirishima was holding my hand, gently swinging it back and forth. "Of course I did..." I squeezed his large, slightly calloused hand, so excited to know that our fingers fit so well. He looked over at me and I noticed the small scar just above his right eye. This little imperfection made his handsome face so much more interesting; I found myself longing to kiss it. I wanted to put my lips against it because I wanted him to know that I loved him along with all of his imperfections.

But I held back. Kirishima and I did know each other quite well, but there was still so much more that I had yet to discover about him. "Hey, Miku?" Kirishima snapped me out of my daydream; I had been staring at him. "Oh sorry... Just lost in thought." He stopped walking when I said this.

"You look a little sad, are you sure that nothing's wrong?" He forced me to look him in the eyes. "I just... I just realized that I want to know more about you Kirishima. I want to know even better I already do now! I want... I want to be able to know stuff about you that no one else knows." I felt my cheeks turn pink as I confessed my thoughts so openly. "Is that weird?"

"No, not at all." Kirishima wrapped his strong arms around my waist and bowed his head so our foreheads were touching. "If anything, I've been thinking the same thing. We can discover each other's secrets together, okay?"

"Okay."

We ended up arriving to school later than anticipated, but we were still early enough. "What took you two so long?!" Kaminari groaned, putting himself between Kirishima and myself. He wrapped his arms around our shoulders and grinned impishly. "You two weren't up to anything were you?"

"That's right, none of our friends know about us yet..."

"None of your business!" I stuck my tongue out playfully. Kaminari laughed with glee. "I'm taking that as a maybe! Dang Kirishima, such a player!" Kaminari began to hassle Kirishima and soon Sero jumped in. "Shut up you idiots!" Bakugo eventually got tired of their rowdy jokes and glared at all of us. "Jeez, someone's not a morning person..." Kaminari leaned in and whispered to me. I had to bite down on my lip to keep myself from laughing too hard.

Class started was about to start and everyone went to their seats, nervously awaiting the results. We were about to see what heroes saw potential in us and wanted to hone our skills. I anxiously played with my pigtails, twirling some of my locks. I felt a pair of eyes on me and turned to see Kirishima lovingly gazing in my direction.

He saw me looking back, but continued without any hint of shame. "Kiri..." I whispered, trying not to get the attention of my other classmates as I squirmed under his eyes. He heard my plead, but mischievously continued. "Stop!" This time I whispered with a little more force which caused him to chuckle at my pink cheeks.

Luckily, Aizawa Sensei walked in to the room, bringing Kirishima's attention to the front of the class, saving me from the embarrassment. "Morning."

"Good to see your bandages off, Aizawa Sensei." Tsu-chan called out to our teacher, whose face we could now see. "Yeah, I'm glad to see that your doing better Sensei!" I threw my hand up in the air, smiling at him. He mumbled into his scarf, obviously flustered by our concern. "Anyways," Aizawa Sensei continued after clearing his throat. "Today we've got Hero Informatics class today and a special one at that."

I heard Kirishima audibly gulp and Kaminari let out a small groan. "Do we have a pop quiz?"

"You'll be coming up with you hero aliases." Everyone cheered at the news. I timidly joined in, yet a pit in my stomach was forming. Not only was I worried about the results of the internships, but now I also had to think of what I wanted people to call me for the rest of my life; the name that I wanted my legacy to be tied to.

I had always had ideas, even as a little girl, but most of them were silly thoughts and completely impractical. But now... Now it mattered. I couldn't just say something that sounded cool or flashy. It had to be something that matched my image and values.

"But first, let's review the draft picks for this year." Aizawa Sensei pointed to the board and the numbers populated. "There's typically more of a spread, but our top two stole most of the spotlight." He wasn't joking when he said this; Bakugo and Todoroki were on a completely different level than the rest of the class.

However, that didn't matter. All that mattered was that I had at least a couple pros interested in me; then I could be happy for my friends. I could be happy once this suffocating lump of nerves went away! My eyes scanned the list for my name and I luckily found it just above Kaminari's name."Yes! I can't believe that I got this much attention even though I was knocked out in round two..."

I continued to read the names, releasing another sigh of relief when I saw Kirishima's name. Even Ochako-chan had gotten some interest, which I felt was well deserved considering how hard she had fought during that match. I glanced over at Kirishima to see his eyes burning with passion.

"Great job Kiri!" I reached out to squeeze his hand. He gave me a sharp-toothed grin as our fingers discretely interlaced. "Are you kidding me?! Look at where you stack up Miku! You're in the top of the offers!"

"I don't know why though... It's not like I made it to the end. I got to the second round, which is great, but it's not like my fight was impressive like yours. I just got beaten by Tokoyami..." I laughed a little while admitting this, but Kirishima shook his head vigorously. "You're wrong, Miku. You have such a cool Quirk and you're really strong and fast and clever. The pros obviously saw that in you. Whoever you pick will be lucky to have you." He planted a quick kiss on my hand while everyone else talked among themselves and I found out that it was possible to get lightheaded from Kirishima's sweetness.

The class began talking about internships; everyone would be participating in one, whether a pro had asked them or not. "You all will be working along side pros to get more experience in the field of hero work that you want to pursue."

"And that's where our hero names will come in! Oh, this is getting fun!" Ochako-chan bounced around a little in her seat after we began to understand how real this was for us. "Your names are only tentative, but you still want to pick something appropriate..."

"Or else you'll know true hell!" A stunning woman burst through the door, her hands in her thick, dark hair. "The name you pick now may be what the world ends up calling you. That's happened to plenty of pros out there!"

"Midnight!" The class collectively cried out her iconic name, some of the boys slobbering over her skin tight costume which brought attention to all the right areas. "True enough..." Aizawa Sensei climbed into his sleeping bag after giving us a quick breakdown on what our name should consist of. By the time he had completely disappeared from view, my nerves were back, making my stomach churn.

I gripped the name board, staring down at the white space before me. Everyone else in the class was busy scribbling something down while I just stared off into space. I caught a glimpse out the window; the hallways were empty but I could see outside. The sky was a beautiful blue with a couple fluffy clouds floating in the midst.

"'You're wrong, Miku. You have such a cool Quirk and you're really strong and fast and clever. The pros obviously saw that in you. Whoever you pick will be lucky to have you.'" Kirishima's sweet words came back to me and something clicked. "Lucky? And clouds? This may work!"

I scribbled a name down on my board and an uncomfortable pressure built up in my chest as I waited for Ms. Midnight to tell us to stop. After the 15 minutes were up, she asked for any volunteers to come up and share their name. "We have to share these?!"

Panic set in; I wasn't ready to have my name judged by the class, even though these were my friends. I watched as Aoyama bravely went first, presenting his name with confidence. "Shining Hero: I Cannot Stop Twinkling!"

"IT'S A WHOLE SENTENCE?!"

Everyone looked confused, but Ms. Midnight helped to salvage the name, shortening it down to "Can't Stop Twinkling" which still seemed long to me. "Okay, who's next?" Tension set in; the next name had to be good or else nobody would want to volunteer anymore.

"Can I go next, please?" Tsu-chan raised her hand before going up. "I've had this thought out since elementary school. Call me Froppy."

"So cute! It makes you sound like you'd be easy to get to know!" Ms. Midnight fawned over Tsu-chan's clever name. "The rest of you take note. This is a perfectly lovable name!"

"Great job Tsu-chan!" I gave her a large smile as she walked back to her seat. "Your name is perfect for you and it's so cute too!" She gave me a blushing grin, genuinely happy that everyone loved her name so much. "Thanks Chiho-chan! I'm sure you'll do well too." I nervously giggled. "Let's hope so..."

I heard Kirishima get out of his seat and I watched him walk up to the front without the slightest hint of hesitation. I gave him a warm smile, already knowing that he had picked the perfect name because of the look on his face. "This is me! Red Riot!" He brashly slammed his board down, displaying his hero name in his slightly messy handwriting.

"Red Riot! Could this be an homage to Chivalrous Hero: Crimson Riot?!" Ms. Midnight asked as a light dusting of pink covered his face. "Right! I know he's from back in the day, but Crimson's the kind of hero I wanna be." My heart skipped a beat as I was reminded of the times that Kirishima had talked about Crimson. "I never knew that he admired him so much... I'll have to get Kiri to tell me about him." Ms. Midnight looked at Kirishima's board with a small smirk. "Just know that bearing the name of your personal hero comes with a lot of pressure."

"I'm ready for that!" Kirishima clenched his fist with a determined look on his face. I wanted nothing more than to be alone with him, to tell him how great he was going to be. I wanted to tell him how much honor he would bring to that name. I wanted to tell him how perfect it was for him, but I held it all in. I would just have to tell him later, my heart thumping as I saw that toothy grin I loved so much.

"I love your name, Kiri..." I whispered to him as Jiro showed off her board. "Thanks, I'm sure I'll love yours too." The look in his eyes urged me to go, so after a couple more people I gather enough courage to walk to the front of the class, my board in my hands. I quickly turned it around to show my name. "The Airy Hero: Cloud Nine!" I held my breath, trying to judge the opinions of my classmates.

"That's adorable!" Ms. Midnight put her hands on her cheeks and lifted her leg up. "It's simple enough for anyone to remember, yet it's unique cuteness will not only remind them of you, but your Quirk too!" I felt my face heat up from all the compliments and I bowed my head before heading back to my seat.

I was excited for lunch; everyone had picked great names (well except Bakugo) and I was itching to look through all the pros who wanted me. As I walked over to my usual table, carrying my lunch tray, I felt a hand on my shoulder. "What's up Cloud Nine?" Kirishima was beaming when he said my new name. I felt my face turn a little pink, mostly because I still wasn't used to that name yet. "Hey Kiri, you like my name?"

"It's absolutely perfect for you Miku." We sat down next to one another and began chatting with our other friends while we ate our lunch. I secretly held his hand under the table, trying to keep it out of view from Kaminari, Bakugo, and Sero.

When we got back to class, I noticed a couple stapled papers on my desk. "Oh these must be the list of pros that wanted me..." Kirishima also picked up his and began to flip through it. "I can't believe that we only have two days to decide... And they start next week! I'm already getting a little nervous." I shook my head while scanning the names. I was reaching the end of the list when I noticed a name that caught my attention. "Edge Shot?!"

I feverishly filled in the application form and ran out of the classroom. "Miku?!" I heard Kirishima call for me, but I was already gone, sprinting for the teacher's room. My heart was pounding as I double checked the list in my hands. The words stayed firm; Edge Shot Hero Agency. I raised a shaky fist and gently knocked on the door. "Yes?" Ms. Midnight sweetly asked as she opened the door for me.

"I'd like to submit my internship form please!" I offered her the form, my hands trembling. "You've already decided? Are you sure about this? I'd advise you not to rush into this decision..."

"I promise ma'am. I'm not turning down a request from the number 5 best hero." Ms. Midnight smiled as she read my submission form. "Well, you sound very certain that this is who you want to train under. I'll get this submitted for you immediately."

"Thank you!" I heard the bell ring and I went off to find Kirishima. As we walked home, I couldn't help but feel like I was living in a dream; I had the best boyfriend ever standing next to me and now my life long hero saw potential in me and he wants me to work with him. I guess you could say that I was on Cloud Nine.
