Chapter Thirteen
*****
"I'm picking you up at 6 tonight, okay?" Mitch's voice rang through the phone.
"Sounds good. See you then." I replied and hung up. Tonight was the night of the dinner for the Toronto Maple Leafs, though Maisie had an early shift at the bar and couldn't help me get ready.
I had an hour until 4, when I planned on getting ready, so to pass the time I decided to hand out resumes. Out of pure desperation, I applied to every job opening I could find, including a 60's diner where costumes are necessary and quite extravagant.
I stepped out into the chilly air of October in Toronto, cursing myself for not wearing a thicker sweater. The cold breeze nipped at my nose and made me dread the upcoming winter more so. I strolled down the street and searched for a place I hadn't already applied to, though it didn't seem like there was one. Then, as if the universe knew what I needed, I came across a new boutique opening within the next week. I peaked in and fortunately saw a young girl by the till, setting things up. I knocked on the glass door and hoped she would open up for me.
"I'm sorry, we aren't open yet." She told me regretfully when the door was open.
"I see, I was actually wondering about that job you were offering."
"Oh!" She seemed surprised, "Come in than." She moved aside for me to shuffle into the store.
I smiled at her, encouraging her to go on about her place. "I actually own this. My name is Helena Maeve, hence the name, Maeve's. Anyways, no one has came to apply for the position. Basically, I would need you to be here about 5 days a week. Either morning and evening shifts, though I'm not sure exactly when we'll be open. I would need you to help me with unloading the boxes when I get new shipments in, till, and whatnot. If you'd still like it, you can leave me your resume and I'll get back to you within 48 hours."
"Wow, alright. Sounds great. My name is Opal, by the way." I said as I handed her the sheet of paper. "Though you can see that on the paper." I joked with her.
"Fantastic, thanks for coming in. I don't mean to rush you out but I have a lot of stuff to do. It was nice meeting you!" She said as she walked me back to the door. She smiled and closed it behind me.
I walked back into my apartment with confidence, though no one was home to see. I quickly texted Maisie to tell her about the good news I had. I knew she wouldn't be replying soon but I couldn't keep it in much longer. I figured I would tell Mitch when I saw him later on.
I checked the time before rushing into the bathroom to take a quick shower. I was in and out in 20 minutes while still being squeaky clean. I looked in my closet for a fancier dress as Mitch informed me that it was at a high-end restaurant. After a few minutes of searching, I came across a dress I had long forgotten about. It was a baby blue colour, the sleeves off the shoulder. It was looser at the bottom and almost came down to my knees.
After deciding on the dress, I grabbed a pair of silver shoes and a few silver accessories to go with it. I blow dried my hair, straightened it, than put it in a low bun behind my head. I took out a few longer, stray pieces and curled them to frame my face before starting my makeup. I went through the usual routine; foundation, concealer, powder, eyebrows, etc. but added a bit more to my eyes in lighter colours. I found a pair of falsies and put them on as well. I finished just in time because once I slipped on the heels, there was a knock on my door. I rushed to it and found Mitch on the other side in a suit. I smiled and locked up, than followed him out to his car.
"I need to pick up one of my friends and his girlfriend on the way, is that okay?" He asked me as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"Of course."
"Their names are Matt and Sydney, they're great." He promised and flashed a smile.
"I hope so, they'll be the first of your team that I meet." I replied nervously.
"Everyone will love you, Opal, I swear. I'll introduce you to Bozie and JVR next, they're my line mates and they're really cool." He tried to calm me down, "They all are, really." He added on as he pulled up to a house. I saw, who I assumed to be Matt and Sydney, exit the house quickly. Matt let Sydney in first, who shuffled to the seat behind Mitch, and Matt came in next, sitting behind me.
"Hey, Marns." He greeted Mitch as they put on their seat-belts. "So this is the girl you couldn't shut up about?" He laughed.
"Opal, that's Matt and he's a douche. That's Sydney-"
"You can just call me Syd." She said as she stuck her hand out. I twisted my body to shake her hand and smiled.
"I'd give you a nickname to call me but how do you shorten Opal?" I laughed softly, mostly to myself. I saw her laugh a bit, as well as Mitch and Matt.
I stayed quiet for the rest of the ride besides answering a few questions. I really just wanted to prepare myself for meeting a whole new, might I add big, group of people. Normally, I have a solid amount of confidence, but for some reason knowing that these were Mitch's friends made the nervousness much worse. As if my gut knew that these first impressions could potentially affect me for quite a long time to come.
