The Night Runners

An elegant flip through the air, her long brown hair flowing around her body as she landed softly on the roof of the next building, glancing slowly over her shoulder with a smirk, a smirk that was covered by the face mask she had on at the moment. She shifted her back pack on her back, and took off running again, ignoring the calls of her friends from behind her.

Once again, the girl gracefully flipped forward onto the next roof, landing on it softly, before leaping down onto the ground between two houses, a small alley way. She pulled out a bottle of spray paint, and shook it quickly before beginning to liter the wall with the beautiful orange paint. Finally, her friends caught up with her and dropped down to the ground beside her while she was fast at work. They stood back and continued to let her work, admiring it. In bright orange was the words "The Kids In The Dark." with outline of black.

When she was done, she stepped back from the wall and smiled at her work, before shoving her spray paint back into her bag. She turned towards her friends, and pointed back up to the roof. They all nodded, and leaped up to the roof in an instant. Once up there, they all started to high five each other.

"That was great, two!" A boy named Izumo said, and his best friend, Kotetsu nodded quickly. Those were their every day name, but at night they were know as 3 and 4. Tonight it was only these three, but that was fine with them.

"Thanks!" Meiko, or Two, said as she high fived Izumo again. They all laughed as they began to run across the roof again, leaping from building to building as they did, laughing the entire time.

This was an every night thing for the thee of them. They were rebellious teenagers, with bad attitudes and a known reputation without known names. They were called "The Kids in The Dark." Because they were only seen at night, and no one had ever gotten a good look at their faces. They all dressed in similar outfits, a black mask that covered the majority of their faces, black shirts with no sleeves, and fingerless gloves that went up to their mid forearms. Meiko wore a pair of midnight black shorts, that were fairly short but she didn't mind. No one knew who she was, so she didn't care what she looked like.

Izumo and Kotetsu wore black ninja pants, and all three wore regular black ninja shoes. They all three also had black back packs that they filled with things that they used to defile the town at night. By day, you wouldn't think that they were the ones to do this. Meiko was the daughter of the Third Hokage, a shining example of what a straight A student was, she was a girl who helped everyone do what they asked, she never argued, she never lied, but it seemed like a night, something switched off inside of her. She didn't know exactly what made her want to do that, but she loved it.

"Boys, I think it's time to call it a night." She said as she glanced up at the moon, noticing that it was high in the sky meaning it was around midnight. Both of them just nodded, and they jumped away from each other and back to their houses. When Meiko got to hers, she slowly opened her window and slid inside as she did every night. She gave a deep sigh as she pulled the mask down off of her face, exposing her perfectly put together face.

Her skin was a porcelain pale color, unlike her brother who was fairly tan. Her nose was the perfect size for her face, and she had chocolate brown eyes a lot like Asuma.

Her hair was a dark brown, and it fell down to the middle of her back. She sighed softly, and pulled up the hair onto the top of her head as she undressed out of her night time street outfit, and into a sleek night gown. Meiko smiled slightly as she hid her bag and clothes under her bed, before crawling underneath her sheets and falling asleep.

"Meiko!" Asuma screamed as he walked into her room, but she didn't move. He groaned slightly as he walked over to her bed and crouched down beside her. "Meiko." He said, poking her slightly.

"Meeeiikkooooo." He said, poking her again, but this time twice.

"Meikooooooooo!" He said, poking her in the face slightly. She grumbled in her sleep and pulled the blanket up on her face. Asuma blew out a breathe as he began to shake his sister back in forth, and only stopped when her fist shot out and hit his nose.

"Shit!" Asuma screamed as he placed his hands on his nose, and took a step back from the bed. Meiko sat up and looked over at her brother, a blush forming over her cheeks as she began to scratch the back of her head, nervously giggling with a closed eye smile.

"I.. Uh.. I'm sorry!" She said, still smiling and Asuma just rolled his eyes before nodding.

"It's fine Meiko. This is an everyday thing, you just hit me a lot harder than normal today." He said, laughing slightly before nodding at her. "Get ready, we have graduation today." He said, and Meiko nodded as she swung her legs off of her bed, and began to grab the things she would need for her day.

She started to get dressed, pulling on a pair of fishnet shirts and a fish net shirt before pulling on her every day black dress over top of it. She slid on two fish net knee protectors, and then slid on her ninja shoes before smiling at herself in the mirror she had in her bedroom.

She stared at her long brown hair and sighed heavily before she pulled it up into two buns on either side of her head because that was the only thing she could with it anymore since it was so long. It was either put it up or let it get in her way for the entire day, so she left it.

She attached her kunai pouch to her right thigh before skipping out of her room and to her brother, throwing her arm around her brothers shoulder and smiled at him.

"Let's go!" She shouted, pointing towards the door as she dragged her brother out the door with her, giggling the entire time.

"Jesus Christ, Meiko!" He said playfully, before he picked his sister up and placing her on his back. She let out a loud squeal and wrapped her arms around his neck, and her legs around his waist. He chuckled and placed his hand on her thighs as he carried her to the academy.

"So I went in your room last night." Asuma said, and Meiko tensed slightly as she looked down at Asuma, smiling sheepishly. "And you weren't there."

"Course I was! Where else would I be?" She said nervously, and Asuma rolled his eyes slightly.

"I know you were out last night, Meiko." He said quietly, and she sighed softly as she buried her head into his neck. "Meiko, you have to stop sneaking out and doing what you do. Dad's going to to find out some day, and it'll be your ass all up and down the village by not just him, but everyone who knows you." Asuma sighed.

Meiko sighed too, and nodded her head. "I know, it's just so much fun." She said quietly, but then her best friend came into view and she smiled, jumping off of her brothers back and running towards her friends.

Izumo and Kotetsu smiled at her as she ran into them, smiling brightly. "Hello, Meiko!" They said cheerfully to her, and she smiled up at them.

"Hello, boys!" She said happily, before extending both of her elbows towards them. "Shall we go?" She said, and they nodded as they looped their arms through her elbows, and all three of them walked inside together.

"Dude my brother caught me again. He went in my room last night and I wasn't there." She said quietly to just the both of them, and they sighed.

"You gotta start locking your door at night or some shit." Izumo said, and Meiko sighed heavily as she nodded her head.

"Trust me, I know. If my dad finds out, I am fucking toast!" She said, throwing her head back slightly and laughing. They walked into the classroom and took their normal seats in the same order every day. Izumo, Meiko, Kotetsu. They all began to chat arming themselves, talking about random things until the teacher came to the front of the room.

"Okay guys! Today we will be taking the graduation exam, it will consist of both the transformation jutsu, and a clone jutsu where you must make at the least three clones. We will begin by calling people out by name, so until you are called, stay in here and chat among yourselves, okay?" The teacher said, and everyone nodded. The man walked out of the room, calling the first name to walk with him.

"Do you guys want to get ramen after this?" Meiko asked, glancing down at her fingers slightly. Izumo  looked at Kotetsu who was looking back at Izumo before they both nodded at the same.

"Course. But who's paying?" Izumo said, and the three's eyes widen as they all looked at each other and Meiko screamed.

"Nose goes!" And threw her finger on her nose at the same time as Izumo, Kotetsu falling only a few minutes behind him, beginning to grumble under his breath.

"Fine, I will pay." He said, crossing his arms over his chest. Meiko just laughed slightly before she threw her arms over his shoulders and hugged him close, smashing their faces together.

"Oh thank you, Kotetsu!" She said, kissing the side of his face causing his cheeks to turn a slight pink color as he stuttered back a 'You're welcome.' under his breath. Meiko just laugh again as he looked over at his best friends.

"Kotetsu Hagane!" The man called out, and both Izumo and Meiko held up thumbs up to their best friend as he got up nervously and left the room.

"He's gonna pass. No doubt in my mind." Meiko said, and Izumo nodded his head quickly in response.

"Of course he will. It's Kotetsu we're talking about. He'll be nervous until he gets in there, and then the over cocky guy we both know will come out. That's how it always is." Izumo replied, and Meiko nodded her head, glancing at her nails.

"So what was that thing you were painting last night?" He asked, and she chuckled softly as she glanced over at him.

"Our new tag. I thought it was pretty kick ass." She said, laughing again.

"Oh it was! I was just curious." He said with a laugh, and Meiko nodded her head again. "Hey, Meiko." He said, and she glanced over at him from the corner of her eye.

"Yeah?" She said, before glancing back at her nails.

"Are you feeling any better, lately?" He asked, and she sighed heavily.

"I guess so." She replied. Recently, Meiko had been really depressed and she couldn't find a reason behind it. She just always thought about how people would be better off without her, and that the world could go on spinning without her here. When she told Izumo about it, he told Kotetsu and they both began to worry and kept a very careful eye on her, in case of an attempted suicide. Both of them didn't want to believe that she would do that, but with the way she told them how she felt, they could never be too sure.

"Izumo Kamizuki!" The voice called out, and Meiko watched as her best friend got up, and left her alone. She began to look at her nails, and the thoughts she normally had over took her mind, and she grew throughly sad, and deep in thought.

That was until a folded up piece of paper landed on her desk, and she began to look around the room of students that were left to see who threw it, but no one looked like that had. She raised her eyebrow and grabbed the piece of paper, and unfolded it.

Her eyes widened as she read the words on the paper. She read it over and over again, her heart speeding up every time she read it.

"I know who the kids in the dark are, number two." was scrawled across the paper in the smallest, messiest hand writing she had ever seen.
