Three Simple Truths

It took a couple of days before I felt ready to face the world again, my employer seemingly understanding after having caught their own lover cheating on them with the company secretary a few years back. Well, ex-secretary after that, but at least they didn't hold my temporary break-down against me. On the bright side, only one of those days were considered as having missed work, the other day having been a day off. I just wish it hadn't been wasted on once more crying over the past.

Although I still looked a bit haggard under the makeup I used to conceal the dark circles under my eyes, I somehow managed to make myself look presentable enough to avoid most of the uneasy glances that I had faced last time I missed work due to that man. At least this time, I wouldn't end up loosing my job because of it.

Settling myself into my seat in front of the computer I had claimed as my workspace, I adjusted the monitor and began searching through the data that had come in while I was gone, making notes and correcting information when needed. Hours seemed to speed by before suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder, giving me a small shake that had be almost falling out of my seat in shock.

"Relax, I am simply concerned because you did not respond earlier when one of the others asked if you had taken your lunch break yet. You've been here for hours already. Surely you are hungry by now?" Hearing Bertram sound anything other than egotistical was almost worrisome since he rarely showed concern over anything other than himself and his programs.

Had I really been here working without a break long enough to make even Bertram himself worry over me? Looking at the clock, I saw that far longer had passed than I had expected, the end of my shift nearing without me taking a single break. At that moment, my stomach decided to give a loud grumble, complaining now that I had finally taken notice of how empty it was.

Looking up, ready to thank Bertram for his unusual thoughtfulness, I froze in place at seeing his vivid green eyes looking down at me from his gently smiling face. But that can't be right. Bertram had brown eyes, didn't he? Those eyes, they were so familiar but not from this face, no. They belonged in another face, one that I had not seen in much longer than the two days since I had been in this facility.

"Morcant?" I questioned as my eyes began wandering, wondering why and how he had taken the place of Bertram, taking over his body somehow. With a simple wink, the green slowly faded from his eyes as his lips moved to form a single phrase, finally leaving a brown-eyed Bertram looking at me in confusion.

"How did I get down here? I was just upstairs a moment ago putting paperwork away..." He continued mumbling in confusion as he wandered off, his hands coming up to run through his slowly thinning hair.

Climbing swiftly to my feet, I rushed past the man and out of the room, heading to the nearest stairwell as I began feeling desperate to see if He was still in that room. Had he been controlling Bertram from someplace so close by, hidden away in the room he had found the man in? But why, why would he be hiding? Was it some kind of prank like the ones he used to pull on me? The thought would have sent a smile to my lips if I had not been so frantic to reach the man.

"Morcant?!" I shouted out as I swung the filing room door open, eyes closed in a mix of fear that he would not be here and worry that he would be. After all, how does one handle being involved in a situation that should, by all rules of science and logic, be absolutely impossible?

Not hearing anything from the room in front of me, I let out a sigh of mixed disappointment and relief, slowly opening my eyes. Standing in front of me was a tall man, his sun-kissed golden skin blemish free as his long, deep red hair flowed past his shoulders, the color simply making the green of his eyes even more enchanting to look upon. I had barely opened my eyes and I was already enchanted by him.

This moment was all it took for me to realize three simple truths. One, this man was not someone that I could use science to explain away his mysteries and I was determined to figure out those mysteries, even if I had to look beyond science to do so. Two, although I didn't know if it was by choice or because of something he had done, I was already fully enchanted by this man, just shy of feeling like I used to when I had started falling for Arthur. And three, the thought of falling in love so easily terrified me as much as it thrilled me.

"My dear (y/n), you always were your loveliest when you were caught by surprise, wide-eyed and breathless," his words, spoken with such a soft yet deep voice, sent chills down my spine as I went to take a step back. His warm hand reached out to grasp my own, stopping me before I had even finished the movement and gently pulling me into his arms. "I'm sorry but I really can't let you go yet. I can't seem to help but want to keep you here with me, just for a moment longer my love. There is something I have longed to do for longer than you could ever understand."

With those softly whispered words, I could only stand in shock as he kissed me, his lips feeling as delicate as a feather as they caressed my own. Strangely, they felt familiar, like a long lost memory or a mostly forgotten dream. It pulled at something within me so strongly, I could not help but begin to kiss him back, my arms slowly reaching up to grasp onto his shoulders like they were a lifeline in the storm of emotions suddenly rising between us.

Finally pulling away with obvious reluctance, Morcant looked down upon me with an almost awed expression upon his face. Dazed, I barely moved when I felt his fingers come up to trace along my jaw.

"I wish I could stay longer at your side, my dearest one, but the magic here is weak compared to what I am used to. I must rest and replenish myself. I will return to you when I can," with those words and one last longing filled kiss, he slowly faded from sight with little more than a whisper of sound and a spark of light from the necklace he wore.

Touching my lips with shaking fingers, everything that had just happened seemed to finally catch up with me and I slipped to the ground, my eyes closing as I barely made out a shout coming from behind me.
