Mavonn Fehr

New York city was one of the bustling cities in United States of America. Yellow cabs roaming around the streets and there, a magnificent statue of Liberty rises throughout the American horizon was built and given by France.

I remember those days of funky highschool life. Boys who were seniors played the basketball game against other schools. I remember that my peers broke into the campus in the midnight, preparing the pranks for our strict teacher and we're led to the Principal's office. I also remember the woman I really admired with. One of those famous cheerleaders and A+ students. But there are many men who wanted to win her heart.

That's why I stayed single.

My friends were now in their own business. One becomes a CEO, one becomes a national swimmer, one married very young, the other was left by his wife and the other was having therapy in a local mental hospital. I remained single. I still working as a singer in my aunt's café and living alone in a small apartment nearby.

Now I'm finished practicing the song, I returned the guitar to its case and carried out to the café. I saw people walking through the streets as it was our normal routine. Then I stopped on my track and looked at the sign. Dale's Café. My aunt married an American businessman in Texas and moved to New York to start their little business. She also became my second mom when my parents divorced just before the graduation. It was sick to hear them separated when I was seventeen.

I slowly opened the door and greeted the waitress. She was still in college and she'll work part-time job just to pay her college fees. Her name is Kelly.

"Hi Mavonn! Good morning!" Her cheery smile was shown on her innocent face.

I walked towards the mini stage and rearranged the instruments. The microphone, speakers, and sound amplifier. Coughing, I grabbed the map from the officals' locker and mopped the floor, from the stage down to everywhere in the café. Except the kitchen, yeah of course.

A young Senior from my old school helped to arrange the chairs and wiping the tables. His name is Trevor Stilton. He moved here from Sheffield, England to study independently. He has red curls with bluish green eyes that made him inherit the Northern European genes.

"Hey Mavonn! Have you practice the song?"

I smiled while mopping. "Yeah, how about you, have you study your lessons well?"

"Yeah but bit uneasy with the maths here." He wiped the table after squirting some water on the damp cloth. "You know. Maths here is different."

"Yes and I also totally sucked on it." I added. "Aunt Dale will come later. Right?"

"Right."

8:05 am

The café was atmosphericly hovered by the smell of latte. People queued up to the counter and order their meals. I saw Trevor walking fastly back and forth, from table to another table. His tray went with drinks, burgers, and sandwiches. And me, I was strumming my acoustic guitar to its melody.

I walked towards the microphone stand and smiled at the audience. "Good morning New Yorkers, do you have a good day?"

The crowd cheered in response. Some were raising their hands and some were shouting like those fangirls. "Yeeeessss!" They roared.

Do you need me, baby?
Do you need my love?
Can you feel it now?
I think it's just a mystery

I plucked the guitar and played it with feelings. The more melody rang, the more it sang with the harmony of my voice.

If the world is against us
God will never leave us
Broken hearted
With like nobody cares

As I leaned closer to the microphone, in my eyes, I saw a familiar woman in her white floral dress. She had short bob haircut with red tainted lips that makes a beautiful smile.

It has no barriers
Between you and me
No matter how hard it is
As long as I care

Her brown eyes catches my attention as I sang melodiously. She smiled as she sat down to the last empty table near the entrance.

When you see the stars
Won't shining
And the colors turn to grey
Close your eyes and think that
I love you
Baby!! C'mon!

I stopped strumming and began clapping my hands on the air. The crowd joined me clapping and I saw her smiling enthusiastically. Her hands clapped with modesty.
"C'mon guys join with me."

The crowd started singing.

It has no barriers
Between you and me
No matter how hard it is
As long as I care

When you see the stars
Won't shining
And the colors turn to grey
Close your eyes and think that
I love you
Baby!!

It was the end of my short song. It would probably be on my Spotify and premiered on this midnight on YouTube. "Thanks guys for supporting my new song!"

As many people came in and out, I made myself towards the woman. She drank her cappuccino and places the mug back on the table. "Hey! You're famous now."

"Yeah, thanks." I gestured my hand pointing out the empty chair. "May I sit?"

"Oh no problem. Nobody's sitting on there."

I bit my lip and sat on the chair. Been obvious. "It's a while since we graduated... How's your parents? Sorry for the loss." She asked and apologized.

"Never heard from them yet." My mind rang a weirdly funny question. "I forgot, what's your name again?"

She laughed at me. That's pretty normal if you forgot somebody's name. "I'm June Roberts! Mavonn maybe you should go to the psychologist for that amnesia!"

I chuckled. Covering my forehead with my palm. June, the awesome cheerleader. "You're a cheerleader, right?"

"Yes"

"Oh dear, I think I must go." I giggled with laughter and tears ran from my eyes. It's been five years ago. "To check my brain."

She slowly went silent. June quickly grabbed her mug and drank the cappuccino. I noticed her weird gestures and asked. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, I'm okay Mavonn." Her voice lowers. "I'm okay."

The day was good with Mavonn. A young Canadian country singer. My schoolmate since sophomore year in highschool. He's famous for singing in our music class or playing with the piano for the choir.

He was left bullied. My exes made fun of him. Mavonn used to have large glasses and steel braces on his teeth. Nerd. Yes he was a nerd that time and I was a spoiled cheerleader who goes for nothing but boys, fame, and sex.

It was five years ago.

I stood up after drinking my cappuccino. Mavonn was wondering why I didn't say anything. "I need to go. Uhm to my house."

"Sure! Walk safe." He lifted his hand and waved at me. Then I waved back. I strode out of the café and felt the aroma of mixed coffee.

I was sick about my past. Drugs with my peers, partying in some bars, and hooked up with some male friends. Everything was wild and free before the new start. My mom wouldn't allow me to date with men now nor marry my perfect dream boy.

Love? I thought it was having a handsome University player. I thought that it was filled with kisses and hugs. But it wasn't.

It wasn't.

As I arrived home, I went to my bedroom and sanitized myself with alcohol and soap. Everything I see is white with small details of colored things. Mom was cooking for her own snack. I went to her and hugged her back while she was flipping the pancakes.

"How are you, my daughter?"

"I'm good." Not good.

"I'm cooking some pancakes. Want some?"

"I'm full." I whinned. "I want to go to my bedroom!"

"Ok go."

I went to my bedroom. The bedroom was pretty looked like a hospital ward. All-white. Remembering, I walked towards the desk and grabbed my pills. I drank the glass of water after taking them.

I remembered the last day of our highschool. The first month of being forbidden. Mavonn gave me a rose with a burned letter. Earlier from that, I discovered that he fell in love with me and he decided to court me. As I read the letter, dad ripped off the paper and threw the rose to the ground. He did this in front of Mavonn.

I saw Mavonn's eyes were filled with sadness as I was dragged away. Dad was the one who forbids me to date because of the consequences I faced. Mom supported his idea and until now. I don't know whether they wanted me to marry for love or not.

Even I was with my boyfriends before, Mavonn was a special friend to me. He helped me out of studying for Geology. He comforted me when I was broken. He was everything to me. I told him my secrets and we share our goals like never before. My highschool bestfriend.

Sadly, the day of graduation was the day I fell for him. Now he's famous and I was always trapped within these white walls. Prison house of white. I sat on the floor while tears rolling on my cheeks. I screamed to let go my pain.

Mom came rushing to help me. She's a professional doctor and Obgyn surgeon. She wrapped her arms around me while I was crying bitterly.

"Shush, be quiet sweetie." Reassuring, she cupped my face with her hands. "What's wrong?"

"Why you don't allow me to love Mavonn? Why!" I yelled.

"Let me explain." She said with authority. I sniffed to silence and looked at her loving eyes. "I don't want your Mavonn to suffer like your grandpa. Being widowed."

"Because you are dating so many people and look at you now! You're having ovarian cancer because of your incorrect way of aborting your child. I'm sorry for being strict about dating. A tear fell from her eye. "I knew you love him but..."

"But what?"

Mom stood up, helping me to stand and walk towards my bed. After I sat on it, she went to the doorway and tilted her head over her shoulder. "Just wait." The door got close. I lied down and looked at the ceiling. Then I grabbed my phone to check my Quote for Today app.

It has no barriers
Between you and me...

The song. I could still heard him singing. His smile never changed even in his braces before. I wonder why he wrote that song. I don't think it was for me. I shook my head. Was cancer a barrier to our love?

7:20 pm
I woke up from my whole day sleep. My gosh! I got up from my bed and rushed to the toilet. I wore my pure white dress. Placing my make-up done has to be complete with a smile. Check!

I walked faster to the dinner room. As I arrived there, I was shocked while standing. A male creature in black long-sleeved shirt with two buttons unclosed making him look sexy. His brown hair dishevelled but still he's hotter than usual.

It's Mavonn Fehr.

He smiled with charisma. Mom was giggling like a young preteen taking pictures with a famous singer. As Mavonn took noticed, mom stepped back and walked away. "Enjoy your date, sweetie." She leaned over my ear and whispered.

Mom was surprising me. Do you know why I'm wearing my dress? It's my 23rd birthday! I realized that Mavonn's wrist was tied with a red ribbon. "Happy birthday June."

I smiled sheepishly. "Thank you." Mavonn stepped forward, a foot between us. "It has no barriers
Between you and me" he sang.

"When you see the stars
Won't shining
And the colors turn to grey
Close your eyes and think that"

"I love you Mavonn. I love since we're bestfriends." I told him. He wipped a tear with his thumb as he cupped my face. He leaned closer, his lips pressed mine and I kissed him back. After that, he leaned his forehead on mine, smiling.

"Je t'aime, June."
