forty-three
"Is everybody okay? No one was bitten, were they?" Seungmin asked, going along the line of survivors as they waited to head onto the roof.
Everyone checked, searching around to make sure they hadn't been hurt. It seemed unlikely as they'd hardly faced any zombies and were all in good shape beforehand, but it couldn't hurt to be safe.
Although he wasn't sure anyone would admit it, being this close to freedom.
He made sure to watch everyone closely, checking for any signs of alarm or panic. But everyone was good.
They were all okay.
He sighed, preparing to open the door to the roof. But as he pushed, it didn't move.
It was locked.
"Damn it," he groaned, turning to Jeongin in concern.
"The others will come get us eventually. They'll have to realize we can't get through," Jeongin reassured him, testing the door again.
"Stay away from me!"
The two turned as one of the survivors yelled, jumping away from Saem who looked up at her in fear.
"What?? What is it?" Seungmin asked, panic setting in.
"There's something on his wrist! I saw it! It looked like a-a zombie bite or something!"
Everyone stood, moving away from the boy as he looked up in confusion.
"What do you mean? Nobody even got close to me! How could I have been bitten?" he asked, his eyes darting back and forth between the group.
They finally landed on Jeongin.
"Please! I don't know what they're talking about! You were with me the whole time! They never touched me!"
Jeongin just stared at him, unable to move. He couldn't know for sure unless he saw the mark. But he didn't want to betray him if the girl was wrong.
Seungmin walked over, sitting beside him.
"Hey, it's okay. Everyone's just a little on edge right now, okay? You don't have to worry," Seungmin smiled.
He rustled Saem's hair before standing and walking over to Jeongin. Jeongin smiled at him, glad that he'd stepped up.
But as Seungmin's back turned towards the boy, Jeongin saw his smile fade. Jeongin's face fell.
Seungmin approached him, subtlety stepping away to whisper to him.
"There's something wrong. It's not a bite, it's almost like...an injection."
Jeongin's eyes widened, but he tried his best to maintain a neutral expression.
"Do you think-does he have something to do with all of this?" he whispered.
"If I'm right...the other group might be in danger too."
Jeongin stared at him, his eyes shaking.
"What do we do?" he said as quietly as possible as his hands shook in fear.
"I think we have to..."
Seungmin motioned a slight gun shape with his fingers out of Saem's range of view.
One of the other survivors approached slowly.
"Is he...is he really safe?"
Seungmin met her eyes and shook his head slowly and she staggered back in fear.
"He's-he's infected!" she said, too loud.
Seungmin turned to face the boy but he had moved. He stood at the top of the stairs, crossing his arms.
"I really didn't think you'd figure it out so quickly. My sister told me if I just played cute, no one would ever know."
Seungmin was frozen in place.
So Kyungsoon was in on it.
The other group...
They had built so much faith in her...
Someone needed to tell them.
But his thoughts subsided as he watched crimson slowly fill the boy's eyes.
"Everyone! Stand back!" he shouted, moving to run in front of them but the boy was faster.
He launched forward at the girl who'd noticed the injection site.
The stairwell erupted in screams, as everyone ran back down the stairs, trying to save themselves.
Seungmin tried his best to herd everyone away from Saem, but as he was distracted, Jeongin rushed forward.
He grabbed the girl away from Saem, just before he had a chance to bite her and pressed the gun between his teeth.
He held him back, keeping his mouth shut as Saem squirmed around, clawing at him.
"JEONGIN!" Seungmin screamed, running forward to help.
"SHOOT HIM! NOW!" Jeongin yelled, his eyes staring at his hands nervously as they sat awfully close to Saem's dangerous teeth.
Seungmin lifted his gun but his hands started to shake.
"I can't! You're too close!"
"YOU CAN! JUST DO IT! WE HAVE TO SAVE THEM!" Jeongin yelled, looking up at Seungmin desperately.
Seungmin felt a tear fall down his cheek.
"I-I can't! I'm going to hurt you!"
"Let me through! I SAID LET ME THROUGH!"
Seungmin turned at the familiar voice, nearly jumping in excitement.
"MINHO!" he cried as Minho pushed his way through, gun cocked.
As he reached the top stair, the zombie crunched down on the barrel, launching the remaining ammo.
Three bullets flew through the air, two flying over the heads of those gathered on the stairs. The third struck Seungmin in the calf, knocking him off his balance.
Jeongin jumped back at the explosion, now defenseless. His eyes were focused solely on Seungmin.
No one was looking at Saem.
No one, but Minho.
Minho took his shot, hitting the zombie right in the forehead.
Just as Seungmin tipped over the railing.
