................................................................

You leaned against the cold stone wall, the rough texture biting into your skin showing through your torn clothes. Blood dried on your skin, as your stomach howled in hunger.

You should have listened to Constantine.

Shouldn't have ignored his warning, stayed inside the house, like he'd said. Yet your restlessness got the best of you and here you were. Kidnapped by demons and wasting away in a windowless room. Your eyes felt heavy and you curled up further.

Maybe just a few minutes of sleep wouldn't hurt.

~

A noise beside you jerked you awake and you jolted as your eyes widely scanned the room. Confusion painted your features as you glanced around the familiar house.

The house you shouldn't be in.

"You're up? You were tossing something fierce love, bad dream?"

You turned your head to see John walk in, a smile on his face and a beer in hand. A frown pulled at your lips and you glanced down at yourself, clothes perfect and skin free of any injury or blood.

This wasn't right.

"How did I get back here..."

He sat down beside you, smile faltering at your words. Like he didn’t understand what you were asking.

"What do you mean?"

Why did your head hurt so bad?

"I was... those demons got me..."

But no, you were here with John. Safe.

Weren't you?

"Must have been a nightmare love, you've been here the whole time." John said dismissively.

His words didn't sit right with you, and the phantom pain from where you hit your head was still there. You could still feel the blood on you, even if you couldn't see it.

"No..." You stood moving away from him.

His face twisted in concern, and he sat his beer down.

"Y/N?"

You continued to back away, grabbing your head.

"It couldn’t have been a nightmare, why would I have a nightmare?"

"You've been through a lot, course you'd have some nasty dreams." He said like that would answer everything.

You raised a hand, and he stopped walking towards you, the worry still on his face, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

"You did a spell... you took my nightmares away..."

Wasn't the room brighter before?

"Wasn't a guarantee love, magic is fickle like that."

You narrowed your eyes, suspicion creeping into your veins.

"But it worked for weeks. It wouldn't make sense for it to suddenly stop."

He began to look annoyed, and he turned away from you, snatching up his beer.

"I'm a petty dabbler pet, must not have added the ingredients right."

Your eyes turned cold and you stared at him silently for a moment. John always said he wasn't a master, although you disagreed, but you knew he wouldn’t do a spell like that on you if he wasn’t sure it would work. A chill erupted goosebumps on your skin and you stared at your arm, before looking back at John.

"The room is cold." You said suddenly.

He looked back at you in clear confusion.

"So it is." He agreed eyeing you carefully.

You smiled at that and glanced at the fireplace you stood beside, the soft crackling of the wood burning bringing you no comfort.

"There's no heat from the fire, isn't that strange, John."

You said his name with venom, watching him with a calculated expression. He started at you a moment before he began to laugh. A distorted, echoing laugh, one that made your skin crawl.

"Clever little human, you're smarter than we thought."

Your surroundings faded away, back to that damp cold room. Back to the pain and horror you'd been enduring for days. You stared at the creature in front of you, no longer keeping up the illusion of being John, and briefly you wondered who the poor man being possessed was.

"No, just smarter than you."

Your words were all the fight you had left, all the bite you could muster. The demon frowned.

"We'll break you dream walker, you'll beg to join us. Even if we have to tear you apart to do it."

The demonic being left the room, leaving you cold and alone once more. You allowed yourself to close your eyes once more, this time your rest was dreamless, a black void of nothing.

~

Your sleep was once again interrupted, but this time by shouting, by the sounds of fighting and things breaking. The smell of sulfur was heavy in the air and the putrid scent of burning flesh made you back even further from the door.

Then just as soon as the chaos had begun, it vanished.

You held your breath, watching, waiting for the door to open. Waiting to see who, or what would step over that threshold next. And when the door did open you wanted to run to the blonde on the other side. You wanted to breath in relief, allow yourself to relax, but you couldn’t.

It could be another trick. Another way to lure you into letting go, just so they could break you down again. John walked towards you, a look of relief on his face when he saw you were still alive. But as he reached for you, he paused at the way you flinched away, the distrust in your eyes.

"Y/N? It's me love, it's John."

You eyed him carefully, never letting your gaze leave him as he knelt in front of you.

"This is another trick..."

He looked at you surprised and frowned a bit.

"A trick? I ain't an illusion darling, can't imitate perfection here." He joked.

You wanted so desperately to trust him, but the doubt in the back of your mind still whispered words of caution. He seemed to notice your internal conflict because he gave you a crooked smile, one you'd become so used to these past months.

"Still incredibly unlucky aren't you love?"

His words from the first time he'd met you echoed in your mind. The conversation that started it all.

'Then... I'm not crazy?'

'Not crazy, just very unlucky'

Your eyes filled with tears, tears you'd been suppressing for days, tears you refused to shed in front of your captors.

"John..."

Your voice broke and your vision clouded, you reached out for him, like you expected your hand to go right through him. When it didn’t you let out a shaky laugh, tears rolling down your cheeks. You touched him more firmly now, hands on his chest, grabbing his arms before you finally wrapped your arms around his neck, burying your face against him.

He froze a moment, unsure what to do until you held him tighter, sobs shaking your body. He wrapped his arms around you, holding you close as you cried tears of relief.

" 'S okay love, I got you, Johnny's got ya." He muttered words of comfort.

"Take me home John, please take me away from here."

He nodded, gathering your weak form into his arms. He held you against his chest.

"We'll get you someplace safe, away from this madness, you'll bounce back, just gonna take some time is all."

You looked at him, clutching his shirt tightly in your hands as you stared into his eyes.

"Don't leave me..."

His eyes softened, and he smiled, pressing a kiss to your forehead as you relaxed against him.

"Never again." He promised.
