Chapter 8
That night, it seemed like everything was finally becoming normal again. We hadn't spoken about the occurrence since, and it was nice. It finally seemed like I was a normal player.
Until a notification popped up on our Forward, saying mail has arrived. I sighed, knowing it was going to be from Char.
The three of us walk down the stairs, where not only did we have mail, but Char was standing in front of the large desk, talking to the counterman. He didn't seem happy to have her visit.
She turns around, "Hello, girls."
"Hi. Um, why are you here?" we ask in unison.
She looked shocked. "To assign powers, of course." she says in a highly exaggerated British accent.
"How?" Laye asks.
She holds in her hand two keys, attached to chains. One was pastel blue, and she hung it around Elle's neck. The key floats to her head, and inserts through a keyhole that appeared. It makes the sound of unlocking some kind of door, and the key disappears. Her fake ears disappear, and real ones grow in.
She did the same with Laye, putting a black key around her neck. It went through the keyhole, and disappeared. Light brown horns appear on her head, and a rainbow gemmed ring appeared on her pinky.
After their transformation, they looked at themselves in the reflection of the pond outside.
"Why do I have horns?!" Laye yells.
"Laye, you're a Gilt. Elle, you are an Arenda, as probably guessed." Char says, putting her now empty hands in her pockets.
"What about Jemma?" Laye asks, poking the pointy end of her horns.
"She- um, she has no key." Char says, awkwardly.
"What do you mean? The government assigns powers due to your activity during the test. She has to have some characteristics of something." Elle says.
"It's not that she doesn't match up with one of them, she does..." Char says, trailing off.
"Well, then she should have an assigned power!" Laye says.
"Yes, but well, no. To put it simply, the government would have to reboot the whole system in order to scan her activity. We figured it would be easier if we just left her powerless." she says.
"That makes no sense! So what you're implying is that the government is too lazy to get off their butts and do something?!" Laye yells.
"No. You wouldn't understand, you're just a kid." Char says, walking out the door, into her chariot.
"I swear, I'll beat the living crap out of her if she says that again!" Laye says, her eyes following the chariot until it was out of sight.
"Calm down, Laye. It's fine, I don't mind. I guess I'm just too awesome for those people!" I say, trying to lighten the mood.
"Yeah! You were awesome out there! Guess the government is too lousy to understand. Let's go do something fun!" she says, running out the door with fists in the air.
I shrug and look at Elle, before running after Laye. Elle follows shortly behind.
We run out the city gates, and past Perin. I didn't know where we were running, but all I did know was I wasn't getting tired anytime soon.
"You two are too slow!" Laye yells.
"I researched earlier about powers, and the Gilt can run around ten times faster than the average person!" Elle says, panting.
"We're not average people!" Laye says, laughing. She wasn't even breaking a sweat.
"Wait for us, if you want to run!" I wheeze out. Laye starts laughing, and runs back and forth, waiting for us to catch our breath.
"Let's go home. You know the counterman doesn't like it when we come back really late." Elle says. "And let's walk."
"Aw, you're no fun Elle. I get you run way faster, and suddenly it's bad?" she says.
"I agree. I don't think I can run much longer." I say, standing up.
"Fine. I guess I'll walk." Laye says, dragging her feet as we walk back.
"Hey guys-" I start, but realized that they weren't moving. The wind stopped blowing, and the trees stopped shaking. I could move, but nothing else can. Time had stopped.
I hear footsteps coming closer. They moved slowly, and they were small. Like a child's footstep.
The girl from before appears in front of me, and hangs a necklace around my neck.
"You're such a bad person." she says, giggling.
""What?" I ask her. I could see her face perfectly clear now, under the light of moon. It was delicate with light blue eyes, and a tiny mouth, and she was skinny. So skinny, you would think she's just skin and bones. Her wavy cream colored dress flowed, though there was no wind.
"You know you're not allowed." she says.
"I'm sorry, I'm a bit puzzled." I say, looking at the necklace. It had a pink flower gem, and it was pretty light.
"You opened the portal of Unknown. Nothing good will come of this." she says.
"You aren't making any sense." I say, finally talking as though I was talking to someone my age, not someone who looks five.
"I come from the same place you do. I know your pain. I'll help you. As long as my existence stays secret. Can you promise me that?" she asks, her light colored hair flows in her face.
I think for a moment, then blurt out my answer. I can't remember what I said to her, but she replied with a faint smile. Her eyes turned red, the cross shape reappearing. If I looked in it closely, it would look like someone had painted it.
"Don't look too closely into them." She says, and disappears.
