Chapter 20

It was stuck in my head all night, as we walked through the streets of Elander. You've gone mad. I didn't think I would take it this seriously. It's just a meer comment. Nothing should be effected by it.
I watched as the colors of the sky mixed into black night, and the sun disappeared. I wonder what sunsets look like to Charlotte. Are they also depressing?
We walk past shops, stores, cafes, and houses. A cafe catches my eye. All of it's lights are on, and people sit down with their families and eat. Waitresses wear fancy black dresses, and the waiters wear suits. It was the only place around that was still open.
"Oh! It smells so nice around here! Can we go in? Please?" Aly beggs.
I think for a moment before nodding. I haven't eaten dinner yet, anyway. I grab the door handle and open it.
"Hello! Welcome to Darly's!" a waitress announces, gesturing to the checkout and check-in counter. "How may I help you?" she asks.
"I'll let you order." I whisper to Aly.
"Alrighty. Actually, can we sit with a menu, please? I like to see the pictures before I order." she says, and my face flushes red.
"Okay!" the waitress says, leading us to a table. A menu colored gold sits upright on the table. "I'll let our waiter take it from here!" she says, walking back to the counter.
A man walks up, and bows. "Hello, I'll be your waiter today! How may I assist you?" he says, making it obnoxiously clear he isn't happy with his job.
"I'll have some green tea, and a croissant!" Aly says, smiling back. She must not have noticed.

"I'll have a soda." I say.
"What flavor?" he asks.

"Um, cherry?" I answer.
"Will that be it?" he asks.

"Yeah, I think so." I say.
He comes back five minutes later with our drinks and food. I grab a straw sitting in a basket on the table, and put it in my cup.
"Wow. Customer service is obviously not that guy's forte." I say, trying to break silence.
"Hm? I thought he was nice." she says, sipping out of her cup.
"You didn't notice it? He made it pretty clear he didn't like it here." I say.
"Hm, I guess you're right. Maybe he's just having a bad day." she suggests.
"True, that could be." I say.
Time passes quickly, and we finish eating. After finishing a conversation about bugs, I walk to the counter to pay. The waiter from before sits behind it, reading a novel.
"Hello, we're done. What's our bill?" I ask.
"We don't have bills here." he answers.
"That's crazy. You have to have bills. How else does this place make money?" I ask.
"Money? The only world that has that is- I knew it! You look exactly as described!" he shouts, disturbing other customers.
"Excuse me?" I ask.
"You're wanted everywhere! On every wanted sign!" he says, holding his cheeks in his hands.
"I'm very confused." I say, looking around at all of the staring people.
"Come back into the kitchen. I want to talk." He says, holding the door so we could enter.
"You're crazy." Luna says.
"I agree." I say.
"Aren't you scared? The government is looking for you!" he says.
"You said something about wanted signs. I haven't seen any anywhere." I say.
"Well, I've seen a few. There isn't many bad things about this world, so when something does happen, everybody knows!" he yells in joy- I think.
Luna grabs him by the tie, and pushes him back. He falls on the floor with a giant thud, but he quickly stands.
"Look, I might seem crazy. I probably am, actually. But my name is Dr. Ro. I'm the only person here that knows about other worlds. I could help you guys! I've researched time lapses since I was young. That's how I learned. No one else believes me, though. You need me, and I need you." he says, begging.
"He's nuts." Luna says, expression completely draining.
"Yeah, we're going to go-"
"Stop!" he says, and no matter how hard I try, I can't continue moving.
"What did you do?" Luna shouts.
"You know about the keys of Ritche, right?" he asks.
"No." I say, backing up slowly.
"You know, the keys the government gives you when you finish the power test?" he asks.
Luna mouths off at him while I think. I reach my hand into my shoe, and pull out the two keys Laye and Elle had.
"Like these?" I ask, hanging the ribbon they were tied with on my finger.
"Precisely!" he shouts, reaching for them. I quickly pull it away. "I invented these!" he says, smiling.
"Why should I believe you? The government gave these to my friends. The government, not some weird old guy like you." I say.
"I'm not old, I'm only twenty one!" he says, looking at the keys that were gripped in my hand.
"Same difference, same difference. How did you end up here, though? In this tiny cafe? If you really invented them, you wouldn't have to work, you'd be famous, and everything!" I say.
"Yes, that is what I thought. But, you see, this world isn't fair. The government stole my ideas, and made me make the keys. Do you know how many I had to make? Huh? Twenty thousand! Of course, most of them were taken by me, and that is why I am in hiding, because hiding something the government wants is like being a rat hiding from an eagle." he rambles. I'm starting to think he's only half crazy now. Kind of.
"So how many have you stolen?" I ask.
"Well, I'll tell you something. In this world, there are only twelve keys of Ritche left. I destroyed many of them, I own five, you have two, so how does that add up?" he asks.
"There are five left." Aly says.
"Correct!" he shouts.
"Okay, so, are they all given away?" I ask.
"Who knows? I surely don't. Only a dummy would go near the government if they're wanted." he says, and I scratch the back of my neck, try to make myself less uncomfortable.
"I can go back and ask." I blurt out, "You may call me a dummy, but I go near that building a lot. Even though I'm wanted." I say.
"What?! They haven't killed you?" he says.
"No. Unless I'm already dead. That's also an option at this point." I say.
They both give me a confused look, until Ro nods, "I'll go too. I might get shot or something, but hey! You only live life once." he says, as we exit the cafe.
