Chapter 19
I let her sleep in my room last night, and I slept on the couch. I feel like the other two bedrooms in this apartment are to sacred to enter, or something. Today, I explore the apartment a little bit more, since it's pretty big, and has a lot of rooms.
I walk to a door that says 'do not enter'. No capital letters, mustn't be that important. I walk inside, and fabric lays everywhere. Drawings of outfit designs are thumbtacked on the wall everywhere, and mannequins stand tall, some with measuring sticks and things.
This was Laye's office.
I walk around, and find a desk under stacks of papers. All of which had outfit designs on them. I open a drawer, and found a frame in one. I look at it, then turn it over. A picture of Laye, Elle, and I sat inside the case. We never took any pictures together.
I look at us three. Laye was in the middle, the one taking the picture. She held up a peace sign, and smiled as wide as her face would let her. Elle, who was extremely camera shy, had a small smile on her face. I smiled as I usually do, with barely any teeth showing, but that's just how I do.
To my right was a trophy case, with a golden lady hitting some kind of ball. A question formed in my head, so I walk out of Laye's office to ask.
"Hey, Alyanna? You're familiar with Jaylemm, right?" I ask, as she sits on the couch, eating a waffle.
"Yeah, why?" she asks.
"I want to know, is there high schools and colleges and stuff here?" I ask.
"Um, not that I'm aware of. But I am aware that there is some on your home world, Earth. Are you feeling homesick?" she asks.
"No, I don't want to go back to school. I just wanted to know, because two friends of mine are from here, and they both go to school." I say.
"Well why not ask them? They'll probably give you a more informational answer." she says, walking towards the sink and putting her plate inside.
"Um, that's really not possible anymore." I say, scratching the back of my head.
"Why not?" she asks.
"They aren't alive anymore." I say, sitting down on a bar chair.
"Oh, dear. Well, if I had to say, maybe they aren't actually from here. Just a thought." she says, sipping tea that practically came out of nowhere.
"That wouldn't make any sense, though. Even everyone else says they were Jaylemnian." I say.
"I said, it was just a thought." she says, walking into the bathroom.
"Thanks for talking," I say, tapping my fingers against the marble counter.
"You can come in, you know. I'm just brushing my hair." she yells, the sounds echoing off the walls.
"I'm good. I don't even know why you need to brush your hair, it's pretty either way." I say.
"You're joking. My bed head gets so bad some mornings that I look like I got electrocuted." she says.
I giggle to myself, making me feel better, "Thanks."
"Huh? Did you say something?" she asks.
"No, nothing important, anyway." I answer.
"Okay." she says.
After she was done, which didn't take long, we decided to see if the counterman was working. We walked down the stairs, until we got to the bottom floor.
"Hello, counterman?" I ask, looking around.
"Maybe he isn't here." Aly suggests.
"He's almost always here in the morning. There isn't any workers to run the counter when he's gone." I say.
"Hm. Could he have gone to the store?" she says.
"I don't know. His apartments' right there," I say, pointing toward a door, "But it would be rude to just barge in."
"Yolo!" she says, jumping over the counter. She has quite obviously gotten possessed. That sentence sounded way better in my head.
"Seriously? You did not just say that." I say, squeezing through a small space between the desk and the counter. I follow Luna into the room, and it was a walk-in kitchen. There was two other doors inside, most likely a bathroom and bedroom. I open one of them, and it was the bathroom. Luna opened the other, and her eyes grew wide. I look at her feet, and the man laid on the floor, face first.
"Hey. Get up!" she says, tapping her cream colored shoe lightly against his arm.
"Mr, are you okay?" I ask. I place a hand on his back, and shake lightly. I lift my hand, and red liquid streams down my arm. "Luna!" I scream.
"He's not..." she says, looking at the blood flowing down my arm.
"He's dead." I say, letting my arm fall to my sides. I look around blankly for any weapons that did the crime, but there wasn't any.
"Oh." she replies, "I think I'm going to let my sister take over now. I'm not the type for comforting."
"No, it's fine." I say. I blink a couple of times, but no tears come out. To be completely honest, it was pretty normal at this point.
"Dude, you're eyes are all wack." she says.
"Like, how wack? Define wack!" I say.
"It keeps going from red to green simultaneously. That kind of wack." Luna says.
I go silent for a moment, listening to the sound of silence. Suddenly, a chuckle escapes my mouth. I cover it with my hands, but the urge to laugh hysterically fills my thoughts.
"Are you okay, dude?" she asks.
"Yeah!" I wheeze out.
"Um, I'm not sure you truly are." she says.
I calm myself down, and take a few deep breaths. "I'm completely fine." I say, walking out of the apartment. I find myself walking in a familiar direction. One I have walked before. It might've been a few days ago, a few weeks, a few months. Wow, the building has changed. Changed quite a lot, actually.
The whole thing was in ruins, rubble. I walk on shards of broken glass and splinters of wood. My black flats keep them from entering my skin. I climb a large slab of wood laying upwards, and stand on the pointed top. I cup my hands around my eye to look around. The rest of the city was in mint condition- bleh. I hear footsteps coming from behind, and I fall backwards to see who it was.
"Good to see you're in nice health, Jemma." She says, wiping her bangs to the side.
"Hm? Me? Oh! Nice reinventions you've got!" I say, smiling.
"You like what your sister did?" she asks, in a tone that makes it hard to know what she's feeling.
"Sister?" I ask.
"Don't play dumb. I know you have others here from your blasted world. We're not letting you take over." She demands.
"It's funny," I say, the pitch in my voice dropping, "You've practically got the same name. Yet, you fight against each other." I say.
"Come down from there." she demands. With no hesitation, I roll back, and flip off. I land flat on the ground, and giggle a little bit.
"You've gone mad." she says.
"Yes, might be true, but you've gone soft. I'd rather be mad." I say.
"How many of you are there?" she asks.
"No more than four. Me, my sister, Aly, and a boy." I say.
"Only one boy? How come?" she asks.
"I dunno. I would've asked, if you wouldn't have killed the man that brought us here." I say.
"What's everyone's name? First and last." she questions.
"Stop changing the subject! I can't keep up that fast! Plus, why should I tell you?" I ask.
"Because. We have a zero percent chance of finding them, anyway. I want to just know their names." she responds.
"Allyanna Vinche. Luna Vinche. Jemma Whernin. Charlotte Whernin. TLo." I say.
"I said first and last names, please. And that was five, and you said there was four." she says.
"He doesn't have a last name." I answer.
"Impossible." she replies. "Most everybody's got a last name. You just won't tell me." she says.
"You sound like a five year old. Grow up a little." I say, walking away. Luna meets up with me on the street of Elander. The street I forgot to meet with Elle at.
Oh, well.
