Chapter 13
I looked around, trying to find a spot that we could escape. From what I could tell, there was none. I start to panic, thinking that this was the last time I will ever see Laye and Elle. That thought filled my head.
"They are sure taking their sweet time." Laye says, leaning against a wall.
"Don't take this situation so lightly, Laye." Elle says, sitting in the middle of the floor.
"Listen, you two. What if we don't make it?" I ask.
"Wow, way to down the mood." Laye says, chuckling.
"Serious. What would we do if one or more of us dies?" I ask.
Suddenly, the screen appeared again. Char looked at us, and I stay quiet.
"Well, we are almost ready. It should take a few more minutes. In the mean time, we are upgrading Laye and Elle's powers. Any questions?" She asks, and that was when I realized that this wasn't a prerecorded message.
"What is Char short for?" I blurt out.
"Charlene. Why?" She asks.
"Are you sure it isn't short for Charlotte?" I ask.
She looked frightened for a moment, but it was quickly taken over by anger. "Certainly not!" She yells, shutting off the call.
I turn around to face Laye and Elle, who were fully upgraded. Laye's horns were longer, and turned bright red. Her hands were covered with white gloves, and instead of galaxy leggings, she wore white stockings, with a lacy hem.
Her black key necklace hung from her neck.
Elle's hair were tied into pigtail braids, her pointy ears peeking out. Her tight grey dress was turned into a crop top, which was paired with blue jean shorts. Her sneakers went to her knees, and a light blue key was hung around her neck.
"This kind of hurts, having all these spells instantly memorized into my head." Elle says, cringing.
"No! They're longer!" Laye pouts.
I smile, knowing they're stronger, and more likely to survive.
A groundling sound came from the corner of the room, and I spin around to see what it was. What I saw was hard to explain. It looked like a wolf, but three times it's normal size. It's fangs stuck out of its mouth, a mix of blood and saliva dripping from them.
"Holy cow." Laye says, jaw dropping.
The thing scratched its claws against the floor, ripping through the wood flooring.
There was a growling sound coming from all four sides of the room.
"Oh, no." Elle says, looking at the bloodthirsty demons.
"Uh, maybe they're nice demons?" I ask.
"Fetch." A voice says toward the dogs.
We run up the stairs, hoping for them to slow down. In that moment, my mind couldn't think of any good escape plan.
I don't quite remember, but I'm pretty sure I was trying to be mentally prepared to die. Thinking of that now makes me regret it, since there was many things I could have done to escape the situation.
We make it up to the top floor, and I think Laye must have thought there were still stairs to run up, because she continued to run for a few steps, until realizing there were no more to run up.
What? This makes no sense. I can't stop time! The fate of these three girl's existence is in my hands, and I can't do anything?!
Run!
Run!
Smash a window, break a door down! Do something, please! Before it's too late!
Something dawns inside of me, and my vision goes blurry. I see the scene again, where the little girl gets shot, and then we float up into the black sky. The dyed sky. Or maybe the sky was dead, and bringing us with it.
Who knows? I'm just a stupid teenage girl playing a stupid game for days on end.
Hm, what day is it?
Is it my birthday?
Is it Christmas?
I don't know, and I don't think I'll ever know. Not now, not ever. Just like that day, when my little sister died. I never knew, and I still don't know. Maybe I was the one who truly died.
"Jemma!" A faint voice yells. It wasn't very loud, like it was far away.
It gets louder.
"Jemma!" The voice screams. It was so loud now, that it seemed to pierce through my heart.
I open my eyes. I look over at Elle, who seemed to be sleeping in a red liquid. Laye was pinned down by the claws of a demon, and seemed to be the one who screamed. The demon thrashes at her with a large paw.
My eyes widen as I finally realize what was happening. I squint and look at the demon who held me down. It looks into my eyes, and falls over, dead.
I use a blade that I didn't even know where it came from to kill the next two. I ripped blindly through their flesh, blinded by tears. They all disappear, and I run to Laye first, who was closest.
"Laye?! Laye! Wake up!" I scream.
I look over at Elle, who faintly smiled, before disappearing. The tears stopped falling from my face, and I stare blankly at the light blue key necklace that was left behind.
A gently set Laye's head down, and race over to pick up the necklace. After grabbing it, I slide on my knees to try and wake Laye up again.
With a blank expression, she disappears.
With a shaky hand, a pick up her black key necklace. I hold them to my heart, and let the tears come out.
The only people that have been on my side, the only people that liked me when others didn't.
Laye and Elle were dead.
