Chapter 12
Elle couldn't stop fiddling with her new shorter hair, even though around two thousand guns were aimed at us. To be completely honest, it was a bit comforting. Laye was in a bit of a panic, gnawing on her fingernails.
Char's video closed, and one of the men screams to start fire. Elle's hands swirl with a golden light, and with a swipe she poisons a few men. Laye looks around, and she starts to attack. Elle wipes out a row now, and they lay dead. The men from the next row up moves down, tripping over carcasses. A few of them look at us with terrified faces, and try to run away like dogs with their tails between their legs.
"None of you are going to be left!" Laye laughs, knocking out one by a blow to the chest.
I watch. I don't know why, but I couldn't move from the place I stand. I stare, realizing that the higher the people are, the more skilled they are in battle. Some jump down, and I step up, a vine sprouting quickly to create my own staircase.
"Yeah! You don't know who you're messing with!" Elle yells, knocking down the soldiers starting to surround her.
But of course, as guessed, some of the men try to climb the vine I stood on. But more sprout, piercing them in the chest. By now most of them have been murdered, so I sit down, and continue to watch.
"Mommy." I hear, coming from the back of my mind. After realizing it was just a flashback, I try to remember where it came from.
I two little girls, one with brown hair, me, and a girl with such light blonde hair, it was almost white. I was around four years older than her, it seemed, anyway. We giggled, playing dolls, or something. A blurred figure appeared, carrying a tray of cookies. each of us took one and ate it, and the little girl with white hair started to roll on the floor laughing.
"Mommy, thank you. It was really yummy!" she says, smiling.
"You girls go outside for awhile, I'm going to do some chores." mother says, bringing in a basket of laundry.
"Okay!" the girls say in sync.
They ran outside, across the street to the park. They go to the swings, and started rocking our feet back and forth. The sky started to turn black, but the girls continued to swing. They were giggling and laughing, having fun. There was a loud boom, and it went silent for a second.
"Hey, Charlotte." I say, looking over at her. She looked droopily at the black sky.
"Hey, snap out of it." I say. She falls backwards, and her eyes slam shut as her head hits the ground. Blood pools onto the ground, and I scream.
There was no light, and then I was in a place. A place of fear, confusion, and anger. It was hard to explain, but it was terrible.
"Jemma!" Laye screams, her words piercing my eardrums.
I snap back into reality, and a man hold a gun up to my throat. I kick him back, and he shoots. I was prepared for it. The gun was aimed straight for my chest, anyway. It was bound to kill me.
I hear the shot, and I prepare for the worst. A moment later, I open my eyes. I observe the area, and my necklace falls onto the floor, shattering into pieces. I look wide-eyed at it, and watch it collide with the floor.
Out of anger, I sprout a vine and kill the man that destroyed the little piece of normality I had left. I look over toward my friends, who sigh in relief. Laye runs to me, and I jump to the ground.
"This is scary." she says, hugging me.
"Yeah, it is." I say.
Elle walks up, and starts to hum.
"Was that it though? It seemed to be pretty easy compared to what I thought a fight would be like with an army." Laye says.
"I have no clue. For all we know, that was just the beginning." I guess.
The screen appears again, and the face of Char appears.
"Um, hello, girls. Seems you have made it through the first level. It wasn't expected, so please stand by as we prepare level two. Good luck." She says, and the screen disappears.
"I should have guessed. These people are extremely smart." Elle says, and then starts to hum again.
"Lets-" Laye starts, but was interrupted by time stopping again.
I look at the little girl, who sat in the corner of the library, drinking some kind of liquid out of a tiny teacup.
"You need to get out of here, Jemma." The girl states, calmly.
"Why?" I ask.
"Your friends will die here." She says.
"Well, can't you reverse time?" I ask.
"This is a sacred room. No time reversing here. Only stopping. So tell me, how do you know about my power?" She asks, tucking a strand of hair behind an ear.
"I noticed your clock necklace. Plus, you've been stopping time in order to speak to me, correct?" I ask.
"Yes," she smiles, but it quickly turns into fear, "You need to leave before the second level. There will be three levels. The second one is meant to kill Laye and Elle. The third, you. But you'll make it through. But, get out of here, or it'll be too late for them." She says, gesturing toward Laye and Elle, who were in a fighting stance.
"Okay." I say as she disappears.
"Lets kill them off!" Laye yells.
I sprout vines out of the floor, and try to cut the doors.
"What are you doing?" Elle asks.
"Trying to get us out of here." I say, trying to shatter the glass from the window.
Charlotte, a tiny girl that acted thirty times her actual age, watched in the corner. Sometimes, she wished so dearly that she could help her sister. But for now, she'll watch, waiting for her chance.
"Prepare yourselves for level two."
