Chapter 10
My brain was blank for the next few days, and eventually Elle recommended I log off. I chose not to, since I didn't even know the difference between real life and virtual life.
I hear a knock on my bedroom door.
"Hello? Jemma? Are you okay?" Elle asks.
That was a silly question. Of course I'm not okay, but at the same time, I'm perfectly fine. Life is strange. At least my life is, anyway. I can't predict anything anymore.
"Um, we'll leave you alone for awhile." Laye whispers, and I hear her footsteps soften, until I couldn't hear her anymore.
I whip my head back, to stare at the ceiling. The ceiling fan whirls around in circles, and my eyes follow one of the boards. I remember back when my mom was alive, and I would do this.
"Oh, sweetie. You look like a dog when you do that." she would always say, and I would laugh.
I hear a giggle in the flashback, but shrug it off.
The fan continues circling around and around, and I finally stop staring.
With shaking hands, I stand up, to face myself in the mirror. Looking at my reflection, I can't tell who I was. The pink flower necklace shimmers, and I pull it off. My eyes instantly turn red, with the crosses in them. Thorny vines start growing out of the ground, and I put the necklace back on, and all of that disappears. That's how it works.
I walk to the door, and open. I was surprised to find that they had actually left. I walk into the kitchen, to find Char sitting on a barstool.
"What do you want?" I ask.
"You don't know this, but you're slowly endangering your friends." Char says, spinning around to look me in the eye.
"You need to start explaining things. Now. Before someone gets hurt because of me." I say.
"I can't. The government has decided they wanted you alive for awhile longer. SO they can do tests on you, I presume. But you're in no danger, for now. So I wouldn't put too much though into it." she says, running her fingers through her hair.
"You just said I was putting Elle and Laye in danger. Tell me what's going on." I say, gripping onto the gem on my necklace.
"They're going to be taken away for awhile. It'll only be around five days, so you go off and do whatever it is you do. Trust me, they are in no danger with us." she says.
"How am I supposed to trust you when you say you want me dead?" I ask. But truthfully, I was yelling pretty loudly.
"We're just going to put them through some questioning. For the last time, don't worry." Char says, leaving the room.
I don't chase her, instead, I look in the fridge, where there was a sandwich made. I eat it quickly, and walk back into my room, where I fall asleep.
I open my eyes, ready to be back in the normal world, where Noah and I argue, I go to school, and watch tv until I fall asleep. I look around, still in the room in which I went to sleep. I felt completely rested up, and I race down the stairs, to the place I dread the most.
I grab Char by the collar, and she jumps out of fear.
"Oh, dear, don't scare me like that!" she says.
"I can't log off."
"Yes, I'm quite aware of that."
"Let me log off."
"I am afraid I cannot do that."
"Sure you can. You guys hack the system everyday. Let me log off!" I yell.
"We created the system!" she yells, but instantly covers her mouth.
"What?" I ask.
"Nothing. I've got important work to do." she says, trying to escape my grip.
"Yeah, right. You have some explaining to do, and if you don't..." I slowly escape the sentence, forgetting what intimidating thing I was going to say next.
She takes a knife out of her pocket and cuts off the collar of her jacket that I held onto, and runs to safety. I'm left with a black strip of cloth, confused, and with no answers.
I start to walk around, looking at the white, handcrafted wooden decorations. All I could imagine was someone taking their own precious time to sandpaper blocks of wood. I pass by a tall door marked with police tape. Of course out of curiosity, I rip some tape down and enter the room. The door opens with a loud creak, and I cringe, looking around for anyone that was going to try to arrest me. Luckily, no one comes out of the doors down the hallway.
I walk in, the first thing I notice was the giant purple crystal in the middle of the room. I look around, and this was probably the most normal room looking room in the building. To simplify, it wasn't very fancy.
I walk closer to it, and see my reflection against the shiny surface. I put a hand up to touch it, but my necklace slams against the stone. It repeats that process over and over again, until I grab my necklace, making it unable to slam against it again. I look at the spot it hit, and it made a flower imprint.
"What is this?" I whisper to myself.
I circle around the stone, looking for any other imperfections. Almost half way around it, I see a circle imprint. but instead of barely dented like the flower part, the circle was around an inch deep. I put my finger inside, and my mind starts to go foggy. I was almost at the point of being unconscious, when I feel someone tug me away.
I jump up from the ground, looking for the person who pulled me away. They were nowhere to be seen. All I could hear was a whispering voice.
"Be careful, you're getting closer..." it said, but soon went away.
I walk out of that room, slowly closing the doors. I hum a toon, but I can't remember where I first heard it. I remember my mom, how she used to sing. Yes, this was her song.
I walk around the fancy building, watching as wandering eyes start to stare at me, but I don't really care. I know where they are now.
No one tries to stop me from going into the forbidden room, but then again, back then, I didn't think it was forbidden.
